I '0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \ViLLL-iii H. MANNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in the county of Franklin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skiinniing-Regulators for Tce-Makin Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in an improved construction of device for automatically regulating the skimming of boil-tanks forming a part of an ice making apparatus, whereby such a device is provided which is positive and etlicient in its operation and simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring t0 the accompanying drawing which is made a parthereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a boil-tank of the character described equipped with my improved skimming regulator, Fig. 2 a detail view on the dotted line 22 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a sectional view through the regulating device.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the boil-tank, and B the casing of the regulating device.
The tank A is or may be of any appropriate construction for the purpose, being provided with a steam-coil a in the bottom thereof connected with the steam pipe 1 by which the heat is supplied for boiling the water therein. A skim-dish A provided with a discharge a is securedon one end of said tank and skim holes a are provided in the end of said tank leading into said skim-dish on the normal water level therein, as is usual. A water supply pipe 2 leading from any source of supply is arranged to supply the water to said tank as desired.
The casing B is in effect a goose-neck extension of the purified water discharge pipe B which leads from the bottom of tank A to the filters and purified-water storage-tank (not shown) as is usual. Said goose-neck is secured by means of bolts Z), or in any suitable manner, over the perforation in the bottom of said tank. Said bolts also preferably secure the flange or fitting Z) on the under side of said bottom to which the upper end of pipe B is attached. Packing-rings b are interposed between the opposite sides of said bottom and the adjacent parts around the bolts Z) to insure a watertight joint. The inner end of said goose neck extends down to a position near the bottom of said tank and is formed with a alve seat at its extreme lower end. A valve B is mounted in said lower end and adapted to seat on said valve seat. Said valve is pivot-ally mounted on the inner end of the lever B which is fulcrumed on the pivot 6 held in bearings on the ears or flanges 32* cast on the outer lower edge of the part of casing 13 surrounding the valve. A float B is attached to the outer end of lever.B by means of a screw-threaded stem If which is adapted to screw into a screw-threaded perforation in the outer end of said arm B A nut Z) is adapted to limit the adjustment of the parts and permit the length of stem between the top of arm B and the float to be regulated as may be desired.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The distilled water, or other water from which the ice is to be made, comes through pipe 2 into tank A. where it is boiled by the heat supplied through the pipe 1 to the steam-coil a in the bottom of said tank. The impurities which rise to the surface of the water run through the skim-holes a in the end of said tank into the skim-dish A and are discharged through the pipe 0 The skimming takes place whenever the level of the water in said tank A rises above the lower edge of the skim-holes. The float B is so adjusted by means of its screwthreaded connection with the arm B that when the water rises to above the level of the skinrholes sui'liciently to carry through the skim-holes more than the skum and other impurities on the surface of the water it will operate to lift the outer end of arm B and pull valve 13 oft its seat on the lower end of the goose-neck casing 13, when the water in tank A. will flow through said goose-neck and discharge through the pipe B to the filters and storage-tank. As soon as the level of the water has fallen sulfieiently said valve will be closed by said float and the out-flow of the purified water stopped until the iii-flow of the water through pipe 2 has again raised the level of the water in the tank sufficiently to repeat this operation.
By reason of having the gooseneck shaped casing B in the form shown it will be seen that the purified water is always discharged from near the bottom of the tank where itis in its cleanest state, the impurities being caused to rise to the top by the boiling operation. Also it will be seen that the form of said casing prevents any air-bubbles from getting into the water, the goose-neck forming a trap or seal which is always full of water and allows no bubbles to enter. This would be true even though the valve might leak as there will always be a space in said goose-neck above said valve filled with water. By reason of the adjustment provided between the float B and the arm B the operation of the device may be very sensitively regulated so that the skimming can be conducted according as may be required by the character of the water used and the amount of impurities which it contains.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an automatic skimming regulator for ice making apparatus, the combination, with the boil-tank provided with skim-holes at a certain level, of a gooseneck secured in the bottom thereof over the opening in the discharge pipe, a valve-seat being formed at its inner end, a valve mounted in said inner end of the goose-neck on the inner end of a pivoted lever, and a float connected with the outer end of said pivoted lever to normally rest at substantially the normal water level when said valve is closed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the boil-tank of an ice making apparatus formed with a skimming arrangement at a certain level, of a goose-neck mounted over the opening in the purified water discharge pipe, a valve in the inner end of said goose-neck, and a float for controlling said valve to open the same when the water rises in said tank above the skimming level and close it when the water falls below said skimming level, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a boil-tank pro vided with a skimming arrangement at a certain level, of a discharge pipe leading from said tank, a goose-neck secured inside of said tank over the opening to said discharge pipe, the inner end of which is arranged near the bottom of said tank and below the bend in said goose-neck, a valve mounted in said inner end, and a float mounted in said tank and connected with said valve by means of a pivoted lever, said float and said lever being adjustably secured together, substantially as set forth.
