Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November l, 1909.
Patented Dec. 20, 1910. Serial No. 525,734.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN G. FRIEDEL, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Nest, in the county of N ew York and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to folding beds, and the principal object of the same is to provide a bed of the type specified with means whereby the mattress and its frame may be raised to a vertical position and the head and foot of the bed drawn together to closely embrace said mattress and frame so that when the bed is not in use it may be stored compactly in the minimum of storage space.
Another object of the invention is to provide supporting means for the head and foot of the bed so that the bed may be stored in a vertical position when folded.
Still another object of the invention is to provide the mattress with means whereby its tension may be regulated without the necessity of removing the same from the bed.
in carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily7 susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the improved bed. Fig. 2 is a side view, dotted lines being used to indicate the folded position of the bed. F ig. 8 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 8 3, Fig. l. F ig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. l. F ig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the links, for pivotally connecting the mattress frame to the foot of the bed.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, l designates the head and 2 the foot of the bed, said head and foot being provided with the usual end posts 3 4, which support the same. Each head post 3 is provided with a laterally projecting arm which terminates in a vertical arm G which rests on the floor, said arms 5 6 forming an auxiliary support for retaining the ends of the bed in a vertical position, and the foot posts 4 are also provided with the similar arms 7 8 which provide an auxiliary support for the foot of the bed. A supporting bar 9 connects the opposite arms 8 of the foot of the bed, said bar having a pair of links l0 pivotally mounted therein, the outer end of said links being pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the side bars 1l of a mattress supporting frame. Said side bars ll have one of their ends pivotally connected to the auxiliary supporting frames of the head of the bed, their other end being free and adapted to be supported by the bar olf the auxiliary frames of the foot of the The ends of the side bars l1 of the mattress supporting frame are provided with an upstanding lug l2, the lugs at the foot end of said side bars being connected by the end bar 13 of the spring mattress 14, and the lugs at the head end of said bars being connected by the mattress adjusting shaft l5. Said shaft l5 carries a pinion 16 which is engaged by a spring pressed pawl 17, to hold said shaftin the desired mattress holding position.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the mattress frame may be readily lifted from the supporting bar at the foot of the bed, and rocked on its pivotal connection with the auxiliary frames at the head of the bed until it assumes the position indicated in dotted lines in F ig. 2, the pivotal movement of said frame, through its link connect-ion with the auxiliary frames at the foot of the bed, will draw said foot toward the head of the bed, thereby permitting the bed to be compactly stored in a vertical position. Another prominent feature of the invention is in the manner of supporting the mattress by the lugs of the mattress frame by the end bar and the adjusting shaft, as it will be seen that the tension of said mattress may be readily regulated by manipulating said shaft.
`What claim as my invention is l, A bed comprising a head and a foot, auxiliary supports for said head and foot, a mattress frame having one end pivotally connected to the head support, a bar carried by the foot support and serving as a rest for the free end of said mattress frame, and pivotal link connections between said bar and the intermediate portion of said frame.
2. A bed comprising a head, arms for supporting the same in vertical position, a foot, arms carried thereby for supporting the same in vertical position, a mattress frame having one end pivotally mounted between the head supporting arms7 a bar connecting the toot supporting arms and serving as a rest for the free end of said mattress frame7 and links having one end pivotally mounted on said har and their other end pivotally connected to intermediate portions of the sides of said mattress frame.
8. A folding bed comprising a head, afoot, a right angular support at each lower Corner of said head and toot, a bar connecting1 the supports for said foot, a mattress frame one
