' Letters Patent No. 97,918, dated December 14, 1869.
mrnovzsn RAmwAY cAn consume.
The Schefiu1e referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, NOAH HILL, of Leavenworth City, and Leavenworth county, in the State of Kansas, have im'ented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Coupling; and I hereby declarethat the follow- "ing is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same; reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 .is atop view; r
Figure 2 is a side view, in part a longitudinal section; and g,
Figure 3 shows one part or section of the coupling,
turned one-quarter over, thereby showing the position of the parts whenout of place.
A The main body'of the coupling is made of eitheroast or wrought-metal, andattachedto thevcar in the usual manner, so. as to form a hunter or buffer; but as the mode of attachment forms no part of my invention, I have not shown such in my drawings.
The lower and main section A, represented by the same letter in all the figures, embraces the whole of the stem audthe lower half of. the mouth. It is perforated, as shown at B, for purposes hereinafter de-.
scribed. i
C, in theseveral figures, represents the upper section of the 1nouth-piece, which is secured to the'lower section by a hinge-joint, as shown atD, so that-the mouth can he opened, as shown in fig. 3. The month is ordinarily kept closed by means of a spring, E, fastened tothe main body, just back of the hinge, but which will yield to any unusual pressure, and thus release the coupling. v r
The upper section of the month is excavated just behind the lip, as shown at F, in figs. 2 and 3,for the purpose. of forming a catch, corresponding in position i to the opening B, as is fully 'shown'in fig. 2.
The coupling-bar G consists of a solid bar of wrought-metal, having a conical-shaped head upon both ends, as shown in figs. land 3. When this head is inserted into the closed mouth, the spring E yields snfficiently to allow theupper section 0 to rise sufliciently to allow the head to enter the mouth, so
that the catch formed by the recess E and opening B will engage the head, and hold itfa'st, but still allow-- iug suliicient. play to admit ofthe oscillation of the cars.
, I will nowdescribe my device for uncoupling at pleasure. This consists of bent lever H, having its fulcrum at I, upon the Side of the lower section A.
The short arm of the lever. H extends downward and-forward of its fulcrum I, and is there pivoted to the lower end of the connecting-bar K, the upper end.v
of which is pivoted to mouth-piece Q, as shown in out There also ertends inwardly from the lower end of the lever H, an arm, L, which is bent at right angles,'"
so as to enter -.the opening B in the lower section of the month.
By depressing-or drawing back the lever H, the
bar raises the outer end of; the section 0, so as to clear the head of the bar G, and, at the same time, i
the bent arm L, fig. 3, lifts the head from the catch formed by theopening B, and this operation releases the bar at one end, while it is securely held bythe other, ready for coupling again, when required.
The'head of the bar is flush on' two sides wit-h theneck, so that in the eventof one car jumpingcthe track, or to be thrown into an unnatural position, turned over on its side, or thrown down an embankment, the mouth is opened, as shown in fig. 2, and the car released.
I do not claim the constructionof the dead-head,
nor broadl devicesfor simultaneousl o enin ans 7 7 I b I and lifting a connecting-bar; but
\Vhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangemenh'witli the jaws O I) andlspring E, a
of the lever H, connecting-bar K, and lifting-bar L,
constructed as described, and arranged to operate in connection with the link G, as setfoi-tlu NOAH HILL.
