.Letters Patent No.-97,906,' dated December 14, l1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of vthe: same To all whom 'it .may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GORTNER, of N ashport, in the county of Muskingum, and in the State of Ohio, `have invented 'certain new'and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters;V and'do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof',
reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, mak?v ing a part of this specification. l
The nature of my invention consists in the construction aud general arrangement of a corn-plantel', aswill be hereinafter fully s et forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, 'to make Aand use the same, I
will now proceed to describe its'construetion and operation, referring `to the annexeddrawingspiu 'Which- -Iligure l is a plan view-of the machine;
Figure 2 is' a view of the inner side, ofthe hopper;
Figure 3 is a rearedge view ofthe saine; and
Figure 4 -is a perspective view. A A represent the, two sides, which are made of plank, of suitable thickness, in the form of sleighrunners, connected` by the cross-pieces B B.
At suitable points, under the sidesA A, are secured theshares G C, which prepare the ground for the corn, which is dropped from the hopper through .vertical openings in the sides A A'. l,
. In front and rear ofthe share 0,011 the under edge ofthe side A, are teeth c a, as seen in fig.,4.
VOn thevnpper edges of thefsides AA aresecu'red the hoppers D D, which have inclined bottoms.
The inclined bottom of the hopper or box D has a three-cornered orice, in which isplaced a scraper, b,
of rubber or other elastic material, and under said opening is a shoulder, e, against which the lower curved end ofthe dropper E bears, said droppervbeing pivoted on the outside of' the inclined bottom.
The dropper E is, on itsinner side, provided with aA groove or recess, in which is' placed aul adjustable spring, d, for the purpose of making said recess larger or smaller, at pleasure. i
A grain of corn fallsfroin the box D'into the recess Mpg-.
in the dropper E, and is carried by said dropper, in a manner that willbe hereinafter s et forth, directly over the opening'through the side A, when it falls down through the same, and isldeposit'ed in the ground.
0n the upper end ofthe dropper E are pins e e, between whichl is inserted the edge' of a foot-board, G,
hinged to the middle cross-piece B, and held in an upright position by means of the spring 'H. The driver, on his seat I, presses on said board G with his foot, which turns the droppers' E E sufficient to drop' the corn, as above mentioned, and as soon as the pressure is removed, the spring H will move the -foot-board and the droppers back to their original -position. l
Having 'thus fully described "my invention, .What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1.y The sides A A', constructed as described, in the shapeof sleigh-runners, and provided with shares C C, and pins or teeth a a, substantially as shown and described.
2. The droppergE, provided/on ,its inner side, with a recess, having an adjustable spring, d, aud pivoted tothe inclined bott-om of' 'the hopper or box D,- sub.l stantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' 3. The hinged foot-board G, held in an upright'position by the spring H, and connected with the drop-y pers E E, substantially in the manner and for the.
purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination au'd arrangement of the' sides A A, cross-pieces B B, shares C C, hoppers D D, droppers E E, foot-board G, spring 1I,'and seat I, all constructed as described, aud operating substantially inthe manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand, this 16th day of September, 1869.
' HENRY GORTNER.'
Witnesses l N. W. SHEnnAnD, DAVID SHERRARD.
