Description

To all whom it may concern.-
JACOB n. GIBSON, on onnsTNUT'Lnvnt, 'rnNNsYLvANIA.v i
Letters Patent No. 97 ,903, (lated December 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlN-DR'ILLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters PatentVand making part of the same.
Be it known that I, J A0013 F.' G1BSON,ofGhestnut Level, in the county of Lancaster, and State of' Penn- Sylvania, llave invented a new and useful Improvement in. Grain-Drills; 'and lI do hereby declare that the following is a full,'.olear, and exact description of p the construction and operation ofthe saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Winch- Figure l is a side` elevation, and
Figure 2, a plan view. y This invention relates to a seed-tube, pivoted in its drag-bars, in sucha manner that it may yield to an immovable obstruction.
The invention consists in bracing the seed-tube in the drag-bars, by means of a chain attached at its ends, to the tube, above and below the point of' junc-4 lion of the latter with the supporting arms, and passing over a toothed wheehheld between the supporting arms so tightly that it will sustain the tube in the properposition against the ordinary resistance of the f soil, and not so tightlybut that it will rotate suliciently to allow the tube to clear an immovable ob- Stacie.. i
In the drawings- A is the seed-tube, and
B the drag-bars to the end of which the tube is pirted.
Gis the toothed whee1,`plaoed on a shaft, c, betweenthe arms B, which nre capable of being tightened upon the wheel, by means cfa nut, screwed upon the projecting end .of the shaft c. Y D is the chain, connected, at its ends, with the tube, and passing over the toothed wheel.
'After the obstruction has been passed, it is only necessary to loosen the wheel C, turn it so as to draw the tube, bymeans of the chain, once more into the proper position, and then tighten the wheel again.
Having thus described my invention,
What l claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The clamping-bolt @toothed wheel C, and chain D,
arranged with reference tothe seed-tube and-dragbar of a grain-drill, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
. JACOB F.7G1BSON.
