Be it known that I, FRED C. BUscHnK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to means for securing the doors of carriers, such as freight cars for hauling goods, so as to prevent opening of such doors without rendering detection possible.
The invention provides a novel form of seal lock embodying a small number` of parts and which is durable and at the same time of such formation as to admit of the parts being readily accessible for any purpose and more particularly for placing the seals in position and insuring destruction of the seals when the lock is opened.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out yin the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front View of a freight car door provided with a seal lock embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line @cw-w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the lock on a larger scale, having the lock bolt depressed and the seal omitted. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line g/g/ of Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The lock comprises a casing 1, which is formed with terminal extensions which are apert-ured to receive the bolts or fastening means employed for connecting the lock to a side 2 of the freight car or other part to which the lock is to be fitted. A lock bolt 3 is slidably mounted in the casing 1 and .is adapted to project through an eye or staple 4 so as to retain the hasp 5 in place when engaged with said eye or staple. Theupper portion of the lock bolt is enlarged and is provided at its upper end with a head for the hand when pressing the lock bolt inward to cause its active end to pass through the eye or staple 4. A spring 6 mounted l upon the lock bolt normally exerts a pressure thereon to hold the same out of action.
A recess 7 is formed in the front of the casing 1 and is adapted to receive a seal 8. Lips 9 extend into the recess 7 from the lower edge of the recess and serve to retain the seal 8 in place. A lip 10 provided upon the lock bolt 3 is adapted to project into the recess 7 opposite the lips 9 and engage the opposite portion of the seal 8 when the loclr bolt is depressed, thereby retaining the seal in xed position. A spring actuated lock pin 11 mounted upon the lock bolt 3 is adapted to enter an opening 12 formed in the front of the casing 1 so as to hold the lock bolt when pressed inward.
The opening 19. leads into the recess 7 and is covered by the seal 8, hence when the lock bolt is secured it is necessary to break the seal before access can be had to the locking pin 1l to effect release of the lock bolt. The lip l() projects through an opening 13 formed in an offset of the easing at the upper end 0f the recess 7, said opening 13 forming part of a guideway in which the enlarged portion at the upper end of the lock bolt 3 is slidably mounted. The upper end of the wall of the recess 7 adjacent the opening 13 is beveled for the lock pin 11 to ride upon when the lock bolt 3 is pressed inward. The instant the lock pin l1 registers with the opening l2 it springs outward into said opening and holds the lock bolt depressed. To effect release of the lock bolt the seal 8 is broken, after which the lock pin 11 is pressed inward, which may be effected by means of a suitable device such as a nail, pencil or other point. When the lock pin l1 is pressed inward the spring 6 throws the lock bolt 3 upward.
The spring actuated lock pin 11 is mounted in a guide 14, which is secured in an opening formed in the lock bolt 3, said guide 14 being hollow and receiving both the lock pin 11 and its actuating spring, the latter being confined between shoulders of the pin 11 and guide 14 and normally serving to press the pin 11 outward.
The has 5 may be of any construction, but is pre erably offset between its ends` to throw its end portions in different relative planes, whereby the lock may be set hack from the face of the strip so as not to project and be liable to injury by coming in contact with a projecting part. The hasp 5 is secured to the door 15 by means of a. staple or in any well known way to admit of the hasp swinging.
In practice a seal 8 of glass or other frangible material is placed within the recess 7 with one edge engaged behind the lips 9, after which the hasp is engaged with the eye or staple 4: and upon depressing the lock bolt the lip 10 engages with the opposite edge portion of the seal and holds the same in place, the lock bolt being held depressed with its projecting end in engagement with the eye 4 by means of the lock pin 11, which enters the opening l2. Nhen it is required to open the lock the seal 8 is broken and the lock pin ll pressed inward, thereby releasing the lock bolt 3 which is pressed upward by means of the spring 6.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I havedescribed the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which -I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have-it'understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such Ychanges may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

In a seal lock the combination of a casing provided in a side with a recess for receiving a seal and having a projecting lip extending into the recess to engage an edge portion of the seal, said casing being further provided with openings leading from said recess, a lock bolt slidably mounted within the casing and having a projecting lip to extend through one of the said openings and engage the opposite edge portion of the seal to retain the latter in place, a spring actuated lock device mounted upon the lock bolt and adapted to enter t-he other opening of said recess and hold the lock bolt when pressed inward, and a spring normally exerting a pressure upon the lock bolt to throw the same outward.
