Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concem:

Be it known that I, Joan W. llu'n'rnnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockhill, in the county of York and State of South Carolina, have invented a no r and useful Shutter Manipulator-and .l astener, of I which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to shutter fasteners and manipulators, ahd it has for its object to provide a fastening which maybe operated when the windows are 'aiscd only a few inches.

Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening which may be constructed at very little expense and which may be adjusted in place with very little trouble, the fastener being so constructed that, when adjusted in operative position, it will hold the blind secured under all circumstances.

Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.

Io this specification 'I will describe the preferred form' of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erenee indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which" Figure 1 is an outside view of a portion of a window frame and the blinds hinged thereto, my fastener being shown in connection therewith; Fig. 2 is an inside view of the window frame with the blinds closed; and Fig. I", is a view showing the pin mom her which is used in connection with the rods forming the fastener.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that to'the sill 5 of the window frame (3 is secured an eye member 7, this eye member 7 being preferably a screw eye. It will also be seen that red members 8 are tlI'tlClP lated at their outer ends to blinds t), which are hinged to the window frame 6, the rods 8 being preferably articulated to the said blinds 9 near their hinged sides by securing screw eyes 10 to the blinds 9 and having the outer tern'iinals of the rods S, disposed through the said eyes. and bent around, thereby forming the desired connection with the blinds. The inner terminals of the rods 8 are bent to form eyes lfl, one of the rods other rod.

Mounted on one of the rods 8 is a pin member 12, this pin member 12 being formed of heavy wire and being bent around the rod 8 so that the pin member 12 is free to slide from one end of the rod to the other. lhe pin member 12 is also bent to form a projection or terminal 13, a terminal 14 of lhe'wire being disposed substantially parallel with the projection 13. i

The manipulator is worked as follows: lVhen the blinds are closed, raise the sash a few inches, take hold of the pin member, or lock 12, with the right hand, slide it toward the center of the window, which is toward the eyes in the two rods, then let the terminals 14 drop into both eyes. The blindsmay now be opened by pushing both of the rods (mtwardly, which will open both of the blinds at once. The projection, or terminal 13, may then be pushed into the screw eye, or staple 7, which will hold the blinds open against the strongest wind. \Vhen the. blinds are to be closed, the window sash should be raised a few inches. as stated above, when the. operator should take hold of the pin member, or lock 12, and the rods and raise it so that the projection, or terminal 13, is free from the screw eye, or'staplo 7, the pin number, or lock 12, being also at the same time,"l'reed from the eyes 11 on the rods 8. lhis having been done, the pin member, or lock 12. should be moved to the right with the left rod 8, which will pull the blind on the left a little ahead of the one on the right. the right-halal rm 8 being then moved toward the left, which will make both of the rods come together when the blinds are closed.

l. in a shutter fastener, in combination with a window frame, two shutters hinged thereto, two rods articulated at their outer terminals to the shutters respectively. the rods having eyes at their inner terminals, one of the rods being disposed in the eye on the other rod, an eye member secured to the window frame, and a pin member carried by one of the rods, having two projections, one adapted to be disposed in the eyes on the rods and the other in the eye member.
