Description

l itnitid gime gaat @time Guiones II. SMITH, .or GALESBURG, ILLINOIS. i
Letters `Patent No. 97,819, dated DecembervlL-ISBQ.
W IMPROVEMENT 1N eMerge-consomme FIRE-Boxes.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent nd making part of the'same.
Fire-Box; and I do hereby declare that the vfollowingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had' `to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
" rlhis invention relates to anew and improvedmethod of building fire-boxes and furnaces,
whereby thesmoke and gaseous products of combustion which pass. up:
i Y g ward from the fuel and from the re=box are returned thereto, and lsubjected -to a high temperature land consul-med.v
Theinvention consistsin the formation of a rel `brick firebox, covered with a cap or dome of metal sumption.`
or othersuitablematerial; andin a flue or pipe, made of lire-brick or lire-clay, orother-suitable material, ar-
,i ranged within the fire-box, through which the smoke vand gaseous products'of combustion 'are made topass, as 'hereinafter is more fully described .and ina provision for the ladmission of 'oxygen from outside ofthe furnace to mingle with said products of combustion in their passage from thefire-box, and assist their con- Figure 1 is avc'rtical section of the furnace or tirebox; through the line a: z of iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the line y y offigl.' i v Similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.' l
A is the fire-box. y i C represents the grate-bars.
D is the dome or combustion-chamber above rthe fire-boxproper.4 This dome may `be `made of metal or tire-brick, or other good heat-r`esisting material.
The fire-box is made of fire-brick, or lined with that `orothfka'r `incombustible material.
E is a pipe, placed horizontally in the fire-box, made' Iof firefbrick or other incombustible material, extending across the lire-box into 'the space between it and the outer casing of the furnace. 4 It is perforated at intervals with small-openings a al, through which a small portion of the flame from the firefbox may jet into the interior of the pipe.
F isa flue, extending from near the crown of the dome D to the perpendicular due G, which, descend- .dome through the pipe-F ing between the outside of the tire-chamber i and the exterior casing of the furnace, has free communication at its bottom With-one end ofzthe pipe E. The other end of the pipe Eopeusintoa similarfiue, H, rising up on the opposite side of the lire-chamber and leading to the stack.
b is .a small pipe, extending from outside of the Iouter casing of the furnace to the inside of the descending-flue G, into which it opens at or near the open end of the pipe E, `and may be provided at its outer end with a stop-cock, if deemed expedient. The lsmoke and gaseous products of combustion rise into the dome'as the fuel is consumed, and pass from the into the vert-ical pipe G from whence theyescape' into the fire-pipe E. This pipe, from its position immediately over the the'iire',
is heated to a high degree at all times when the iire.
isburning, so that the smoke anzl 'gases which Aenfer it are subjected tp a very high temperature, and are consumed, `or are so nearly consumed .that the quantity escaping through the pipe H to the chimney is too small to be objectionable under any oircumstgmces` The pipe b admits a small portion of air from the outside offthe furnace to the interior of the pipe E, the oxygen of which, mingling with ,the iniiammable contents thereof, and augmented in its power by theI jets of' Hamethrough -the openings a a, greatly assist and expedite the operation, and insures the combustion of A matter inthe fine before it reaches the stack.
T is the door, for the introduction of the fuel;
J represents the ash-pit; and
K the ash-pit door.
The whole furnace may be surrounded by a wall` and arch of brick-work or masonry, as represented 'inf the drawing.
I claim as new, and desire to. secure by Letters Patentil. The pipe E or its equivalent, with or, without Apexforations a a, and the pipe b, in combination with the tire-chamber of afurnace, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pipe E, perforated as shown, or its equivalent, and the pipe b, in combination with the iiues F G H of a furnace, and arranged substantially as speciiied.
