Description
t-elett @Mita A.' PERI N, or PARIS, runnen] Letters Patent N 97 ,801, dated Deccmber'lt, 18,69,
IMPRovnMzNT IN SAW-MILLS..
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part oi' the same.
To all whomit may concern .-1
Beit known that I, A, PERIN, o f Paris, in the Empire of France, have invented a new and improved Endless-Band Saw. or Resawiug-Machine; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plates of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the na-V ture and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguishedfrom others of a similar class, togetherwith snob parts as I 'claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to thatclass of sawing-machines in which aband or belt-saw is'made to pass overtwo pulleys, arranged at a suitable distance apart, bythe continuous rotary motion of which, continuous rectilinear :notion is imparted to the cutting-part of the saw;- and "The -natureof my invention consists. in-'certanrmodia icationsand improvements.-- in the details 'of the same,
and in certain appliances for the purpose of obviatingV the difdcultieswhich have heretofore att-ended the use of 'endless-band saws, to wit;-
First, in accurately adjusting the distance between the pulleys or drums around which `the saw-blade passes, imparting a slow rectilinear motion tothe carriages, to which are attached the hearings containing the axle-boxes of the said drum, by means of a screws'haft operated by mitre-wheels.
Second, in the arrangementof an adjustable guide, adaptable to, all widthsof saws, and capable of either lateral or vertical adjustment.-
Third, in the arrangement of an automatic feeding apparatus, consisting of a system of endless-chain i plates and chain-pulleys, connected by a feed-motion,
composed of a combination of spur and [bevel-gears, with the main driving-shaft of the machine.
Fourth, in `the arrangement of the appliances made use of for laterally adjusting the said automatic feeding-apparatus. Y
Fifth, the arrangement of the devices made use of for the purpose of holding the lumber to be sawed in position, and pressing .the same against the plates of the feeder consisting of a cariiage provided with roll# ers, and actuated by 4a lever, to which a weight is at-I tached, arranged to slide transversely upon the surface of the table of the machine. i i
Sixth, in the arrangement of the devices made use of for throwing the pulleys inand out of gear. Y
In the accompanying plates of drawings, which illustratc my invent-iemand form a part ofthe speciication thereof-4 Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine embody'- ,in g my invention.
AFigure 2 is a planof the same.
carrying the two journal-boxes of the upper or tensioupulley. The said standard also forms a support for the bearings Gr G, carrying the tube H, by means of which the jointed guide e is vertically adj usted.
'lhe carriage F travels upon the angular ways S, and is depressed'or raised by means of the screw-shaft d, which is operatedby means of the mitre-wheels b and crank c, having its bearin gs in the said standard B.
The saidcylindrical tube H slides vertically in per?.v
forations cnt for its reception in the bearings g,1and
raised orlowered bytneans of .a rack, and pinion,
operated by the cranica. The said tube is held in position by means of the set-screw f.
'lo the lower end of the said tube is secured the jointed guide e, consisting of an outer box, c', and an inner box, c. The said inner box is pivoted or jointed to the outer by means of a pin passing through lugs or flanges projecting from the upper sides ofthe boxes.
The Wooden guide c, through which the blade of the saw passes, is secured in position within the inner box by means of the set-screw 6, and the required direction is given to the same by means of the rotation of a screw attached to the outer box, and working in a female screw out in a flange attached to the inner box.
The axle o, of the lower or iixed pulley, revolves -in the bearings I, rigidly secured to the standard B, and carries the driving-pulley T, and also a cone of six Vpulleys, g, which impart motion to a corresponding cone, h, operating the feeding-apparatus. j The said feeding-apparatus consists of a system of plates, K, linked together, and serrated by vertical grooves, and rotating upon chain-pulleys;
Motion is imparted to the said plates by means of spur and bevel-gears t la Z fm n o p q lr, arranged with the axle t, which carries two pulleys, z z', one loose, and the other ixed, over which the-belting connecting the same with pulley u is traversed.
The said automatic feeding-apparatus is connected with and supported by the carriage L, sliding within ways, bolted to the table c, andI moved laterally by the rotation of the screw-shaft V.
" Rotary motion is imparted to the said screw-shaft v by the axle x, which passes transversely under the ltable of the machine, and operates the spur-gears y 'y'. l The carriage M also slides in ways bolted tothe ktable c, andi's provided with rollers, which revolve upon vertical axes. The said rollers are caused to press hard against the lumber to be cut, by means of the bell-crank or elbow-lever b', to which. is attached the weight c.
The run of the carriage is limited and adjusted by means of the screw d', which works in n nut fitted in slots cut at the clevissheped end of the short arm of the said lever.
The pulleys upon the main axle O are thrown in and out of gear by means of the slide u, operated by the lever, and the pulleys z' z are thrown in and out of gear by means of the slides 1, operated by the lever y.
rlhe lumber to be sawed, having 'been placed longitudinally upon the table c, is grasped between the rollers of the carriage M and the plates K of the feedin g-npparatus. The lever-handle operating the devices for throwing the driving-pulley into gear is then raised, und continuons rotary motion is imparted immediately to the pulleys around which the endless saw passes, which produces the continuons rectilinear motion to that part of the scid saw-blade which comes in contact with the lumber.
The operation of the Various appliances herein de scribed will be suiciently indicated by the foregoing description of the saine.
Having described the construction, relative arrnnge` 1. The arrangement of the upper or tension-pulley,-
the carriage E, screw-shaft d, mitre-wheels b, and crnnk a', when combined, as herein described, with the standard B.
2. The arrangement ofthe linked serrated plates K, rotating on chain-pulleys, spur and bevel-gears L k Z m n o p q a', axle t, and pulleys z 2, when combined with the carriage L, as herein described.
3. 'lhe carriage L, screW-shaftfV, axle az, and spurgears y y, when arranged as described.
4. The arrangement of the carriage M, provided with vertical rollers, elbow-lever b', weight c', and Screw e, in combination with the table c, as set forth.
5. The jointed guide e, through which the saw-blade passes, when arranged with the cylindrical stern H, substantially as described.
PEKIN.
