To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI VUNoANNoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prague, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Axle-Stubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to axles and more particularly to the means for connecting the stub ends to the axles proper.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and conveniently attached stub, for
v an axle whereby they may be readily removed for repairs or to replace a worn stub.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for pro-tecting the connection between the axleand the stub and for providing a sand guard in connection therewith.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the axle. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents the axle which is cut away at 2 at its ends and is provided with the vertical lug 3 on its upper outer end and with a notch 4 on its under outer end. The cutaway portion forms a seat for the stub axle 5 which is adapted to lit thereinto and has a vertical lug 6 apertured at 7 to correspond with a similar aperture 8 formed in the lug 3. Between the body portion of the axle and the lug G is a web 9 which is adapted to enter the notch 4 and prevent lateral movement of the stubs 5 upon the main axle 1.
Projecting downwardly from the inner end of the stub is a lug 10 which lies immediately adjacent a similar lug 11 on the main axle, both of which are adapted to enter an aperture 12 formed in the bottom plate of a clip 13. Each of these clips have vertically extending parallel lugs 14 arranged on opposite sides of the axle adapted to straddle the stub 5 and the axle 1 and each are provided with apertures 15 to receive the yoke bolts 16 which pass over the axle and hold the clips in position thereon.
Seated over the lugs 3 and 6 is a shield 17 substantially U-shaped in form and having a transverse web 18 formed in one end with an aperture 19 therein adapted to register with the apertures in the lugs so that the connecting bolt 20 which passes therethrough will connect all of the parts together. The rear side of this shield is considerably longer than the front side and at its upper part has an overhanging 4flange 21 which throws the dust and dirt picked up by the wheel, away from the hub thereof and prevents its entrance into the hub bearing. By removing the clip 13, and disconnecting the bolt 20, the stub axle 5 may be readily removed from the axle 1 without securing the services of a blacksmith.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- `1. The combination with an axle having depending lugs at opposite ends, and seats formed in said axle, of stub axles mounted in said seats and having lugs to lie adjacent the before mentioned lugs, apertured clips adapted to straddle the axle and the stub axles and to receive said lugs, means to prevent lateral movement of the outer end of the stub axles on the axle and means to prevent the outer end of the stub axles from dropping.
2. The combination with an axle having seats formed in its ends, lugs projecting downwardly from the axle adjacent the seats, and lugs projecting upwardly from the axle at the ends thereof, of stub axles mounted in said seats and having downwardly projecting lugs adapted to lie adjacent the downwardly projecting lugs on the axle, upwardly projecting lugs on said stub axles to lie adjacent the `upwardly projecting lugs on the axle, clips straddling the axle and stub axles and being apertured to receive the downwardly projecting lugs on the axle and stub axles, bolts passing through said upwardly extending lugs on the axle and stub axles, said clips and bolts preventing relative movement of the lugs,
