To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of l/Vashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in I-Ione- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hone boxes, the object being to provide a box which is so constructed that by operating a lever the top of the box will be thrown open and the hone thrown up into position to be used.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hone box which is preferably formed of some suitable metal adapted to contain oil whereby the hone will be held within the same when the box is not in use so that when the stone is thrown into position to be used it will be thoroughly oiled.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wiper in connection with thehone box which is also thrown up into position to be used when the stone is operated so that after the razor has been honed it can be wiped ofl.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a spring actuated crank for operating the stone and wiper so that after the stone and. wiper have been thrown up into position to be used and the crank is released the parts will return to their normal positions.
Still another object of my invention is to provide means for locking the crank in a compressed position so that the stone and wiper will be held up above the top of the box.
with these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l is a perspective view of my improved hone box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hone holder, and Fig. 5 is a detail section of the spring showing the manner of operating upon the shaft carrying the crank.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a rectangular shaped box A pref- .in blocks M erably formed of metal so as to form a reservoir for holdingoil as clearly shown, said box being closed by a hinged top B.
Mounted longitudinally within the box is a shaft 0 which is supported by a journal screw C at one end and is provided with a squared portion C at its other end which fits within a corresponding shaped opening formed in a sleeve D carried by a gear E which is also provided with a sleevenpon its opposite side in which extends a stud shaft E forming a journal for the same. Extending through the end of the box adjacent the gear E is a shaft F which carries a gear G which meshes with the gear E so that when the shaft F is operated the gear E will be turned so as to cause the shaft 0 to rotate. The shaft F extends out through the end of the box and is provided with a squared portion F upon which is mounted a crank arm H for operating the same, the downward movement of said crank arm being limited by a stop H and for holding the arm against the stop H, I provide the back of the box A with a sliding bolt I which is mounted in suitable guideways I so that when the same is moved into the position shown in Fig. l the arm H will be securely locked for the purpose hereinafter fully described. The shaft F is surrounded by a sleeve J between the gear G and end of the box over which is arranged a. coil spring J one end of which is secured to the housing A formed integral with the box A and the other end is connected to an adjusting screw J mounted in the housing A so that the tension of the spring can be regulated and this spring has the tendency to throw the crank H upwardly after the same has been moved downwardly against the stop H so that when released the same will be thrown back into its normal position.
Fixed on the shaft C within the box are the arms K of a hone holding plate K' which is provided with lugs K upon one side against which the hone L is adapted to be forced by clamping members M which are slidably mounted in the under side of the plate K as clearly shown, said members comprising angled slotted plates which are mounted on screws M, the outer angled ends engaging the stone L and the inner angled ends having openings through which screws M pass which are mounted in bores formed so that by operating the screws the clamping members M can be brought into engagement with the stone so as to securely clamp the stone upon the holder, The arms K of the hone holder K are of such a length that when thrown up into the position shown in Fig. 1 the stonewill be brought up above the upper edge of the box so that the same can be readily used and it will be seen that when thrown down into the position shown in Fig. the stone will be submerged in the oil within the bottom of the box.
For opening the top of the box B so as to allow the hone to be moved up into position to be operated on, I provide the top with a depending slotted arm N in which is slidably mounted a pin 0 carried by an arm 0 extending outwardly from a gear I mounted on a stud shaft P which meshes with the gear G so that when the same operated the arm will travel upwardly in the slot of the arm N so as to swing the top B up into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and it will be seen that when the crank arm H is released the spring will return the respective parts to their normal positions so as to close the top of the box as the stone is moved down into the position shown in Fig. 3.
In connection with the hone I employ a wiper Q which is preferably formed of rubber or some suitable material which is carried by a holder Q supported by arms It which are pivotally mounted on pins extending outwardly from gear wheels S which are loosely mounted on stud shafts S extending inwardly from the end of the box, the said gear wheels S meshing with a gear wheel T carried by a stud shaft T which meshes with the gear E carried by the shaft C so that when the shaft C and gear E are rotated by the gear G the gear T and gears S will be also rotated so as to cause the wiper to be carried upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 and shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 which enables the person honing a razor to wipe the same after he is through honing the same.
For holding the box upon the support, I provide the same with a laterally projecting lug A over which is adapted to be arranged a clamp U as clearly shown in Fig. 3 which holds the box firmly in position so that all danger of the same moving is prevented.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a hone box having a hone and a wiper arranged therein in such a manner that the hone and wiper will be normally held in the box so as to protect the same from dirt and dust, and at the same time that by operating the crank the box will be thrown open and the hone and wiper thrown up into position to be used.
Having thus fully described my invention,

1. A hone holding box having a hinged cover, a hone mounted within said box, and means for throwing said hone up above the upper edge of said box together with means for moving said box top in advance of the movement of said hone.
2. A hone holding box comprising a box proper adapted to contain oil, a hinged top for closing said box, a hone revolubly mounted in said box adapted to be normally held submerged in the oil of said box, and means for operating said hone together with means for operating said box top.
3. In a hone box, the combination with a,
shaft having a gear at one end, of a hone holder fixed on said shaft, a shaft carrying a gear meshing with the first mentioned gear, a spring for operating on saidshaft, and a crank for operating the last mentioned shaft.
4. The combination with a box adapted to contain oil, of a holder movably mounted in said box, a cover for closing said box and means for moving said hone in position to be operated on together with means for swinging said cover out of the path of said hone.
5. A hone holding box comprising a. box proper adapted to contain oil, a cover for a shaft revolubly mounted in said box, a hone holder provided with arms fixed on said shaft, a hone carried by said hone holder adapted to be submerged in the oil of said box, and means for operating said shaft together with means for opening said cover.
6. A hone holding box comprising a rectangular shaped box proper adapted to contain oil, a hinged cover for closing said box provided with a depending slotted arm, a shaft revolubly mounted in said box carry ing a hone, a gear for operating said shaft, a crank operated gear meshing with said gear, and a second gear meshing with the first mentioned gear carrying an arm provided with a pin adapted to travel in the slot of the arm of the cover.
7. The combination with a box having a hinged cover, of a depending slotted arm carried by said cover, a hone holder revolubly mounted in said box, a spring actuated shaft for operating and returning said hone holder to its normal position and an oscillating arm operated by said shaft through the medium of gears, said arm carrying a pin working in the slotted arm of the cover.
8. In a hone box, the combination with a shaft carrying a gear, of a spring actuated shaft carrying a gear meshing with said gear, a crank for operating said spring actuated shaft, a second gear meshing with the first mentioned gear, a cover for closing erases said box having a depending slotted arm, an arm carried by the last mentioned gear having a pin working in the slot of the arm of the cover, and a hone holder carried by said shaft provided wlth means for clamping a hone thereon, said hone holder being adapted to be swung upwardly into position to be operated on by operating said crank arm.
9. A hone holding box having a hinged cover, a revoluble hone holder mounted in said box, a spring actuated shaft for operating said hone holder, a crank for operating said shaft against the tension of said spring, means for locking said crank arm, and means for swinging'said cover so as to allow said hone holder to move upwardly above the upper edge of said box into position to be used.
10. A hone holding box comprising a rectangular shaped metal box adapted to contain oil, a hinged cover for closing said box having a depending slotted arm, a shaft revolubly mounted within said box carrying a. gear, a holder provided with arms fixed on said shaft, clamping means carried by said holder for securing a hone thereon, a spring actuated shaft carrying a shaft meshmg with the gear of said shaft, a second gear meshing with the first mentioned gear carrying an arm provided witha pin slidably mounted Within the arm of the cover, and a crank arm for operating said spring actuated shaft.
11. A hone holding box having a shaft mounted therein carrying a hone holder, a gear carried by said shaft, a second gear meshing with said gear, gears meshing with the last mentioned gear, arms carried by the last mentioned gear, and a holder carried by saidarms together with means for operating the first mentioned shaft so as to cause said holders to move upwardly above the upper edge of said box.
