JOSHUA BROOKS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO I lMS'llL" AND BENJAMIN E. OORLEW, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRO-MAGNETIC,AnvERTIsING-FRAME;
-The Schedule referred to in diese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To vall whom 'it 'may con cera:
Be it knownthat 1, JOSHUA BROOKS, of Boston, in the eounty of Sublk, and State'oi' Massachu` setts, have invented a new and useful Automatic Electro-Magnetic Advertising-Oase, of' which the i'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specifica-tion, in which- Figure l represents an elevation of the case embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section ot' the same.
The same letters refer to the same parts in the dit'- ferent figures.
rlhe object ot' my invention is to produce an adi vertising or show-case, for the purpose of bringing business-cards or samples, in a noveland prominent way, 'before the public, and thus call attention to the sanie further, to present to view a large number of advertising-cards successively, andiyet occupying but veryl-ttle space compared witltthemode of exhibiting show or advertising-cards in inconveniently large frames, thus enabling the observerto have the cards pass by his sight without' changinghis position, or even the direction of his eyes;l and 4My invention consists infrolling np` and unrolling upon tw'o rollers, alternately, a large band, ofvpaper or other material, to which is atrached a number of advertising or business-cards, .said rollers` to bc set in motion by means of anelectro-magnetic apparatus, or other motive-power, as gravity or elastieityx' To facilitate the understanding of this apparatus,`
I will divide the same. into three different distinct operations which it performs, and describe itin that order: f 1 i lsirst, the Working of the electro-magnets ;l Second, the manner of' revolving the drums which move the band along; and
Third, the releasing of `the drums, and 'the reversing ot' their motions.
Referring to the drawings A is ,a closed ease, the front side of which is covered by a glass.
' I n the lower portion of' caseA is placed the battery B, from which conductors a: and y, charged with the opposing currents, are led to a platform cont-ailling the two insulators u, a', upon which plays the armature C,vib1ating from or toward the magnets l) D and E E', which may be operated in the usual lilllllllCl.
\Vlien one of the pawls q is in contact with the ratchet, it will rotate the latter with drum 1I, and, therefore, roll up the band on the latter, while, at the same time, thef'pawl y is thrown ofi' thc ratchet, and thus the drum ll is free to pay out the band.
To regulate the motions of the free rollers, a tension is applied to the rims F l1` oi' the drums bymeans ofsprings R- E.
The third operation, performing the reverse motion of the band o, is e'ecied in the following manner:
The band o is att-ached to drums H 1:1 by means of straps q, provided with studs p', in such a manner,y that when the band o is wound aroundthc drum, the stud p will lit into a recess of drums H ll, and not present any obstacle in the-winding ofthe band; but, when the band is payed out, the stud will also be drawn out to the extent of strap q, and push against arm 'm' of a bell-crank lever, thus throwing up the other, l', and, with it, the' bar 'L'.
Theupper end of bar o is bent, or provided with a, pin, so as to hold the wire s oibalance-ball i', forming apart of pawl f', in the position out of gear of the ratchet h'; but, by the upward motion of bari', the balance-weight 'i will be released, and, dropping downward, brings pawlj" in Contact with ratchet, while, at
the same time, by substantially like arrangements, the
'lherei'ore, the Y pawl f 4 is thrown cti' the. ratchet. drum' H will be set in motion in an opposite direction, and drum H, released from theraction of pawlf, is allowed to pay ont the band o in the reversed motion.
To use the wholelengt'n of the case, the band may I be girded over rollers n n'.
Thus, it will be seen that the band provided with cards will pass down until drum Il has payed out tle whole length ofthe same, when, by a simple antomatic operation, the motion is reversed, and the band drawn upward; and this operation will be continued as long as the battery is active.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Drums H H', ratchets h h', pawls lg g', bellc-rank e f', c f, and bars (l d', in combination with an electro-magnetic apparatus, substantially as described.
2. Drum H, strap q, stud p,'in combination with bell-crank lever 'm' l, rod c, wire s,'ball li, and pawl g, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof,I have signed my name to this speeilication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSHUA BROOKS.
