UNITED STATES PATENT FFTCE.
SOLOMON B. HAYS, OF BUCHANAN, TENNESSEE.
FIREPLACE-FENDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON B. Hers, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Buchanan, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplace-Fenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fireplace-fenders of a foldable type which is movable on properly-supported slides to position on the hearth when it is to be used and upwardly from the hearth out of the way when not in use.
It is an object of the invention to provide such a fender in which side wings thereof will be automatically extended from folded position when the fender is brought down upon the hearth, in which the slides themselves are foldable when the fender is in raised position, and with which means are associated to maintain the fender in raised position and the parts properly folded.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fendenscreen, with side wings, of novel formation.
\Vhen read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
While the embodiment shown in the drawings is preferred, it is to be understood that the several instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously organized, without departing in the least from the nature and spirit of the invention, and that the invent-ion is not necessarily limited to this delineation.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a view of the fender in posi tion on a hearth; Fig. 2 is a view of the fender in raised position; Fig. 3 is a back view, with the wings folded; Fig. 4 is a back view, with the wings extended and with a port-ion broken away; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken horizontally of the front screen, and showing the manner of connecting the central portion and the folded ends of the screen.
Having more particular reference to the Specification of Letters Patent, P t t 29, 1910 Application filed March 14, 1910.
Serial No. 549,120.
drawings, A designates a fireplace, B the front wall thereof, C the hearth, D the mantel-shelf, and E side flanges of the fireplace.
Pivotally secured to the mantel-shelf, at or near its-front edge by staples or other suitable fastenings 6., is a substantially horizontal rod 7, having depending from each end slides 8 long enough to reach to the hearth. The slides are formed in sections pivotally connected by joints 9 in such manner that the lower sections can be swung toward one another.
A fender is arranged to be movable vertically on the slides 8. It is formed of a front screen 10 and pivoted wings or side screens 11.. The front screen includes a central'portion 12, preferably of wire netting, the ends of which are folded into the folded edges 13 of sheet-metal end portions 14. The top and bottom edges of the central portion and the top, and bottom corners of the end portions are enveloped and bound on each side by folded sheet metal strips 15, which securely hold the parts together. The end portions or members 14 are folded around against the back of the front screen to form guideways. 16 through which the slides 8 are disposed and which afford a reliable slidable connection between the fender and slides. The wings 11 are pivotally connected to the rear edges of members 14: in any suitable manner.
For the purpose of assisting in raising the fender, to maintain it in raised position, and to swing the wings outwardly when brought down to the hearth, a cord, chain, or the like 17, preferably of non-combustible material, is attached to an eye or other suitable securing member 18 on each. Wing at or near its top edge and at or near its free end, and these cords or the like are passed over pulleys 19,'one attached to the fireplacewall on each side. Veights 20 are connected to the free ends of the cords or the like.
In order to draw the wings to folded position against the front screen when raising the fender from the hearth, cords or the like 21 are attached to the wings, preferably by connection to the eyes 18, and are carried through a loop or guide 22 on the top of the front screen midway between the ends thereof. The outer ends of the cords or the like 21 are secured to a ring 23.
The operation of the device is as follows: The fender being in place on the hearth and the wings extended to afford side protection therefor and engaging the flanges E to pre vent their being swung off the he: 7th by the cords or the like 17, to raise the fender it is moved upwardly on the slides, which movement is assisted by the weighted cords 17 attached to the wings. As the fender is being raised, the wings areswung forwardly to folded position against the front screen by pulling on cords 21. hen the fender has been brought to its raised position, the pivoted lower sections of the slides are folded up against the lower edge of the fender and the ring 23 passed over their free ends. The joints of the slides are preferably located at a position slightly below the lower 8C ge of the front screen when it is in its raised position, so that the lower portions will fold closely against the screen. he cords 21. are of a length to bring ring 23 in position to engage the folded slide sections when the wings are folded against the fender, and the engagement with the ring with the folded slide sections, which are kept from further upward swing movement by contact with the lower edge of the front screen, serves to .both maintain those sections in folded positions and to hold the wings folded against the front screen and to prevent their being pulled away by the weighted cords 12. Weights 20 are so proportioned to the weight of the fender as to maintain it in raised position when not in use and as not to raise it when in position of use on the hearth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a fireplacefender, of av slide upon which said fender is vertically movable, said slide being jointed intermediate its ends whereby the lower portion thereof is foldable against the fender when the latter is in raised position, and means for holding said lower portion in folded position against the fender.
The combination, with a fireplace, of suitable supported slides, a fender vertically movable thereon and comprising a frontscreen and foldable wings thereon arranged to form side screens for the fireplace and adapted to fold against the front screen, and weighted cords connected to said wings and having a tendency bot-h to raise the fender and swing the wings away from the front screen.
3. The combination, with a fireplace, of a screen, suitably supported slides having pivoted lower sections and upon which the screen is vertically movable, the lower sections being foldable against the screen when in raised position, and means on the screen whereby the lower sections are held in folded position.
t. The combination, with a fireplace, of suitably supported slides associated therewith and having pivoted foldable lower sections, at front screen vertically movable on said slides, wings pivoted to said screen and arranged to be swung outwardly to form side screens and to be folded against the front screen, a guide on said front screen, a cord connected to each of said wings and disposed through said guide, and means connected to said cords and arranged to engage the lower slide sections when those sections and said wings are in folded position.
The combination, with a fireplace, of slides suitably supported in proximity thereto and having jointed foldable sections, a fender vertically movable on said slides and comprising a front screen and foldable side screens thereon adapted to fold against the front screen, weighted cords connected to said wings and having a tendency to both raise the fender and swing the side screens away from the front screen, a guide on the front screen, a cord connected to each side screen and disposed through said guide, and a ring to which said last-mentioned cords are connected and arranged to engage the lower slide sections when these sections and the side screens are in folded position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON B. HAYS.
