Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Xav. 29, 1910.
Application filed February 14, 1910. Serial No. 543.807.
To o!! ttf/fom it m13; concern.:
Be it known t iat l. Josizeii E. ALLEN, i citizen ot' the United States. residing at Chicago, county of Cook. and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovenients iii Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamps and more specifically to that class thereof designed for employment particularly in conjunction with automobiles or like vehicles.
'The object of my invention the provision of a lainp of the character mentioned which will be extremely simple and inexpensive ot' construction, one which will be of a construction and design such as to permit or facilitate ready and expeditious cleaning thereof, and one which will be of great eflicieucy in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Willi these objects iu view iiiy invention consists iii :i lamp characterized as above mentioned and incertain details ol' construction and arrangement ot' parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the. accompanying drawings toi-mine a part of this specification` and in which,
Figure l is a top plan View of a lamp enihoilyin;r the preferred forni of my invention. hie'. is a central vertical .section thereof hij. i.- a side elevation of a slightly modilied forni of my device. Fig. :l is a central section thereof, Fig'. 5 is a transverse .section taken on substantially the linel f-g/ of Fig'. 4, and Figs. and are detaiis of' the moditied forni ol my laiiip.
lteterriiif;r now to the drawings, particuthe preferred form oi my deyice, l indicates the body of the lainp which is oriiied of a single piece of glass. Said body is. as seen. preferably substantially.cylindrical 1n form lower end where it is provided with a circtilar opening f3. Said body comp 'ises preferably a crown-like top portion 4, a bulging central portion 5 and a reduced depending exteriorly screw-threaded cylindrical portie-ii t", the latter communicating with the opi-ahi;r it. Longitudinaliy extending inte- `'ral ribs T are preferably formed upon the exterior surface of the portion 5 in imitation ot' metallic protector bars in an ordinary train lamp. In this case, however, the ribs T add to the'ornate appearance of the lamp and :it the same time serve as a reinforcing means therefor.
rthreaded upon the portion C is a preferably metallic cap or closure S in which is centrally secured, by means of a' screw 9,
a `fertically disposed post l0. Carried at the upper extremity of said post is an electric light socket ll upon which is threaded an ordinary incandescent electric light l2.' the electrical conductors 12' ot' which pass through an opening provided at; the lower end of 'said cap for the snug reception thereof.
Arranged at the upper and lower ends ot' the body lI` the saine being,- seated in circumferentially extending grooves 13 formed in 75 the exterior surface thereotI are circuiii't'crentially extending reinforcing metallic wire. members or bauds ift. The respective ends` oi" each ol' said members l-i are Vt'orined into aliziing eyes l5 and 15. the alining eyes of each of the members 14 is a headed screw bolt 1G. By means ot' a nut li' threaded upon each of the bolts lf3, the ends of each of the members l-.t may evidently be drawn together in order to secnrely clamp or tighten said 'ineinliers around the lamp body. Having its respectir'e upper and lower ends resting:r in the grooves lll, the anic being secured in positakeii'oii siilistaiitiall.' line .r-fc of Fig. l,
tion therein by the members l-t which extend tlieieover, is a preferably metallic bracket 1S. In elder to prevent lateral movement of .'-aid bracket upon the body l, the latter at the places of engagement of said bracket Extending through 250 i ends therewith is sunk or depressed forming shoulders 19 which abut the lateral extremi- 1 tics of s: id bracket ends. verticallyr aliiiing lai-ly to Figs. l and wherein is illiistntted g openings 20 formed in the body of said bracket are adapted to receive the extremity of an ordinary supporting arin for the lamp. 10C A thumb screw Q0 threaded into said i bracket atfords a means for locking the saine the saine beingr iinperforate except atits to any support upon which it may hearranged.
The entire exterior surface of the body l, lo; with the exception of the portions 2l of the body portion 5, is sand-blasted. ground, or
ithrongh. This forni of my lamp is especially designed for use as a tail light for an automobile or other vehicle and .it ist wrtl. the end in view ot' especially adaptingin Figs. from 3 to 't' inclusive wherein is illustrated a modified form l have shown a lamp especially designed for use as a rehiele head light. Because of the diilereut purpose for which this form is designed from that of the preferred form, the construction thereof must necessarily be slightly changed. In this form the body l is formed a lso of a single piece of Glass, the same being substantially cylindrical` in forni and proxideti with a single opening 3 at its front end. Encircling said body, the saine heing seated in circumferent-ially extending grooves 1S formed in the exterior surface thereof are reinforcing wire members lst adapted, by means of nuts 1T threaded upon correspondingextremities thereof, ton be drawn tightly around the former. A bracket 1S provided upon said body is secured in position by members 14 in a man:`
ner similar to that of the bracket 1S upon the body 1 before described. Dctachably ar ranged within the body l at the rearward end thereot' is a web 22 the extremities of radiatingr spring arms 23 of which forcibly engage an internal circumferential groove. 2i formed at' the rearward extremity of said body. Said groove, it is evident, prevents longitudinal movement of said arms. Having its rearward extremity extending Athrough the perforated disk portion 25 of said web, the same being secured thereto by incansof .a nut' 2o threaded thereon, is a forwardly projecting electric light socket, Supported in the usual manner upon the forward extremity of said soci-:et is an incandescent electric light 28. The electrical conductors QS of trie latter project: forwardly and downwardly therefrom and pass through a recess 2) provided in the mouth edge of the body l', thence rearwardly preferabl)- through eyes formed in the members i4. Supported upon the rearward end of the socket 2i' if; a disk 31. Secured to and forwardly projectingr from said disk is a plurality ot' arms 32 supporting at their forward extremities an annular member angular in cross section. Having its ,rearward smaller end secured by set screws 34 in the member 33; is a .suitable flaring refiector which, as Shown. is preferably of the corrugated type. The outer end of said reflector rests in :i cushion 36 of asbestos or other suitable material interposed .between the same and the inner surface of the body 1. .Arranged over the mouth or opening 3 of the body 1 is a lexis 87 secured in position then-cover by means-of a split ring 38 alining' ear` ll prmided at the e\'ireenitir.
l of .said rin;r erw-.s as a nn'ai:` for clamping .said ring in oper-altre position. lu thi` torni the entire outer surl'ace ol' thtl body l" wiil be sand-blasted or by other means formed opaque or t'alblinent. the light livin; transniittcil fron: ilninterior tlierl'ol' through the leus 3T.
lu either forni it will be observed that the body of tite lamp is l'oi'nud of :i .single picf'r of glass which is so connected to the other lamp paris that, upon breakage or other disablincY of .said body. the appcndants may be readily -ial casi!)- rcmored therefrom and arranged upon another new or whole body. r.l'hc lamp is, as secu, of such design and coostruction as to permit of ready cleaning. Jlfurtherthe interior thereof is prarticall) sealed thereby shutting ont all dust or other foreign particles and conseqneultr avoiding the necessiti' of dustingY or cleaning the' interior thereof. Because of the one-piece con struction of the body of thc lamp. the same may be manufactured at an exceedingly low cost.
.Yhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable forms at' my lamp l do not wish to be limited thereto as there might he Various changes made in the details of construction and the ar 'angement of parts l described without departing from the spirit of the invention com irehended within the scope of the appended claims.
