To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr \V. BUSSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black Diamond, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gates for street cars and the like, and has for an object to provide gates automatically closing over the entrances and exits of such car and which may be opened by means controlled from the motormans end of the car so that the gates may not be opened until the car comes to a full stop and may be closed before starting.
The drawing shows in side elevation a conventional street or motor car with the present invention applied thereto.
A car indicated as a whole at 10 having a front platform 11 and rear platform 12 is indicated conventionally with gates 13 and 14 positioned and proportioned to close respectively the entrances and exits provided by such platforms.
The gate 12 is mounted to slide in guideways 15 and the gate 14 to slide in similar guide-ways l6 and they are provided with rods 17 and 18 respectively which lead to the center of the car and into a casing 19 provided with a spring 20 which bears against the ends of such rods and tends to normally hold both of the gates 13 and 14 in closed position.
At any convenient position, as underneath the car, cylinders 21 and 22 are located having pistons 23 disposed therein connecting respectively with piston rods 24 and 25 which, in turn, are connected rigidly with the gates 13 and 14, respectively.
Any convenient source of compressed air supply as the reservoir 26 is provided with a pipe 27 leading therefrom to any approved form of valve shown conventionally at 28 with a pipe 29 leading from such valve 28 to a T-coupling 30 with branches 31 and 32 leading respectively to the cylinders 21 and 22. It will be apparent that under normal conditions the gates 13 and 14 are held closed by the spring 20. When the car has come to a full stop the motorman on platform 11 may move his valve to such position as to admit air from the pipe 27 to the pipe 29 and from thence into the cylinders 21 and 22, which, acting against the pistons 23, will force the gates 13 and 14 open and maintain them in such open position and against the tension of the spring 20 so long as the air is left on. lVhen the car is about to start the valve 28 is moved to such position as to cut oft air from the pipe 27 and exhaust it from the pipe 29 when the pressure is relieved on the pistons 23 and the gates 13 and 14 are closed by the action of the spring 20.
