APPARATUS FOR STORAGE AND Specification of Letters Patent.
DELIVERY OF INFLAIVZIVIABLE LIQUIDS.

Application filed May 3, 1910. Serial l lo. 559,220.
To aZZ whom it 'mcyjroncern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Hansoonr, of Bochum, Kanalstrasse 4:9, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for the Storage and Delivery of Intlannnablc Liquids, of which the following is a specification: 7
ln apparatus for the storage and delivery of inflammable liquids, of the class wherein an inert gas introduced without pressure, or nearly without pressure, into the evacuated space of the storage receptacle, greatrisk is involved owing to the fact that it the receptacle or the conduit supplying the inert gas becomes leaky the apparatus can continue to work, but then sucks in air. As regards leakage in the conduit, the'danger can be averted by means of suitable pipefracture safety devices, but the danger remains in regard to the filling pipes of the storage receptacle. I-f'tho automatic Valves pushed back by thc unions of the pipes connected to the supply-barrel are not light, or if connection to the air is made intentionally (either with malicious intent or in order to allow of continued working after disturbance has occurred), air can enter the apparatus without producing any noticeable effect on the function thereof.
The present invention wholly obviates this disadvantage by providing in the filling conduit a valve positively connected to a valve in a conduit which must be opened for the purpose of delivery of liquid, these valves being so arranged that when either of them is closed the other is open. It follows thatduring the delivery'hof liquid the filling conduit is closed, and no air-suction is possible, and that during the lilling ot the storage receptacle there can be no delivery and therefore no evacuation enabling air to enter. The slight attendant restriction, that simultaneous delivery and filling are not possible, is wholly outweighed by the 'l11- creased safety obtained;
The valves may be manually operated, but. preferably the action is automatic in so tar that the coupled valves tend to automatically assume the position in which the dclivery pipe is open, and are moved from this position by the placing of a supply barrel in position for replenishing the store.
A construction embodying the device described is shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectionof the com-- plete installation, and Fig. 2 a section of the coupled valves referred to.
In the drawings, a represents the subterranean main storage receptacle, which commain receptacle a to the receptacle 0 whenpipe 9 is placed in communication with a gas-discharge pipe -o.- The space evacuated by the liquid in the receptacle (1 is filled with carbon dioxid flowing at low pressure from the flash it through pipe 1'. 'By turning the cook a to open pipe cl and connect pipe f to pipe 5/, the fluid under pressure is caused to force liquid from receptacle 0 through the pipe (5, the return of the liquid to receptacle abeing prevented by valve 5. The supplypipe l: terminatingin the receptacle a, near the bottom oi? the same, is connected by a flexible pipe Z to the bung-hole of the portable barrel The pipe at joined to the top of the receptacle a is connected by a flexible pipe 0 to a pipe 72 passing throughthe bang hole and terminating near the top of. the barrel. The pipes 7c and a are both joined to a rotary valve 9 by means of which these two pipes can be simultaneously opened and closed. The valve 1 is coupled with a rotary valve '7' in. the pressure pipe 9, the passages of the two valves being so arranged that pipe g is open when pipes 7c and n are closed, and vice versa. This is the arrange ment of coupled valves described in the open-- .ing part of the specification. It is not es sential that the pipe Z: is joined to the valve inasmuch as only the pipe n could under, ordinary conditions admit air to the receptacle a, but for additional safety, and in view of the simplic ty of the device it is advisable to valve both the pipes 72 and n.
A spring 8 acts on the valves q and 0" through a rod 11.,so that normally the pipes in and n are closed, but when the pipes 0 and ter is rotated on the supportt into the posi tion'shown in Figf 1, the union connectin the pipes Z and 0 to the barrel moves the rod it against the action of the spring, sothat i Z have been joined to the barrel and the latvalve 9 is opened and valve 1' closed. .The
,rod u may be locked to prevent unauthorized inflammable liquid, comprising a storage receptacle, means for introducing an inert gas into the space evacuated by the liquid in the stora e receptacle, a liquid supply barrel, a li ui supply conduit connecting said 'barre with the storage receptacle, an auxiliary receptacle adapted to communicate with the storage receptacle, a pressure conduit 'communicating with the auxiliary receptacle, a
valve in each of said conduits, and means for so connecting said valves that While one .valve is opened the other valve is closed.
' 2. Apparatus for storage and delivery of inflammable liquid, comprising a storage receptacle, means for introducing an inert gas into the space evacuated by the liquid in the .stora e receptacle a liquid supply barrel, a
liqui supply conduit connecting said barrel 1 with the storage receptacle, an auxiliaryreceptacle adapted to communicate with the storage receptacle, a pressure conduit communicatlng wlth the auxiliary receptacle, a valve in each of said conduits, means for so connecting said valves that while one valve is opened the other valve is closed, means for rotatably supporting the supply barrel, and means actuated by a rotation of the barrel for operating the valves.
