To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLY M. VERPLANCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVhee-lbarrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheelbarrows.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved wheelbarrowwhich is very strong and rigid and capable of carrying heavy loads, and, at the same time, one which is comparatively light in weight and simple in construction.
Further objects, and objects relatin to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which: the view is a perspective view, the body or tray being shown in longitudinal section, with the parts removed indicated by dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing, the body or tray 1 of my improved wheelbarrow is preferably of the scoop type. I provide handles 2, legs 3, wheel brackets 4, and tray supports 5, which parts are formed integral of single pieces of material. For this purpose I preferably use pipes or tubular material, having double loops formed therein, the rear loops forming the legs 3, and the forward loops the wheel brackets 4. The forward arms of the forward loops are preferably extended into the supports 5, which extend forward well toward the forward end of the tray. The rear arms of the rear loops are extended into the handles 2. The supports 5 and the inner arms of the loops, which are preferably provided with a short horizontal connecting portion 6, are arranged under and secured to the tray preferably by means of Specification of Letters Patent.

I preferably provide the legs with a connecting brace or cross piece 8. The wheel 9 is arranged centrally under the tray and is secured to the wheel brackets 4 by means of suitable bearings, as 10, the bearings being preferably located on the under side of the brackets, as I have illustrated. I have not shown the details of the connection of the bearings to the brackets, as this will be readily understood.
By thus forming and arranging the parts, I support the tray throughout and provide a structure which is built up of very few parts. The structure is very strong and rigid and capable of carrying very heavy loads in proportion to the weight of material used in the construction. The parts are so formed that they serve to effectively brace each other. In my improved wheelbarrow, the wheel is located centrally of the tray so that a large part of the load is carried on the wheel.
My improved wheelbarrow is very economical to produce and is, as stated, very strong and rigid and capable of carrying heavy loads. While the construction is particularly adapted for the use of scoop form of tray or body, it is also adapted for other forms of trays or bodies, as the ordinary pan body or a rectangular body.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a wheel and a tray consisting of a fiat bottom and side and rear walls, of handles, legs, wheel brackets, and tray supports, said handles, legs, wheel brackets and tray supports being formed integrally of a single piece of material bent into double loops, the rear loops constituting the legs, the forward loops the wheel brackets, the forward arms of the forward loops having forwardlyextending arms thereon arranged against and secured to the bottom of the tray to support and brace the In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set forward end thereof, the connecting pormy hand and seal in the presence of tWo tions of the central arms of the loops being secured to the central portion of the tray Witnesses.
