PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN L. MAXXVELL, F GOODWATER, MISSOURI.
""TQ'olZZ 'whom it. 'may concern:
i citizen of' the United States, residing at Goodwat'er, in the county of lron and State -;.,ofl\lissouri. have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in )ragybfmvg of which the following is a specification.
llhisfinvention comprehends certain new andfus'eful improvements in drag saws departicularly for use in sawing logs, 'arid-ith`einvention has for its object a simple, durable and efficient construction of apparatusv of this character, which may be operated: bysteam, compressed air 'or any other power and which will be composed of com- 'paatively few lparts that may be cheaply manufactured and .readily assembled and setup imposition .for use.
"llYithfthis and other objects in view as will mref'lfuilly appear as the description procexds'the invention consists in certainconstructions,`arrangements and combinations othe parts that l shall hereinafter describe -ald-olaim.' n
a Vfull understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following` description' and accompanying drawings, 1n-
wh'ich':
vFigure' 1 1s a side elevation of my nnproved sawing machine, parts being broken "away, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figu is an enlarged detail sectional View showing the gearing connection between the drivlnff shaft and a unter gear wheel hereinafter described; Fig. et is a horizontal sec-A tional view, the section being taken through the case in which paris are journaled; and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the stock of the apparatus and the slide block which it supports. Fig. G is a fragmentary detail perspective View of one Vend-of the rack and a portion of the saw attached thereto, showing the manner in which the saw is mounted on the rack.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description-and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1- designates the stock of my improved sawing apparatus, said stock being provided atl one 'end with relatively stationary clamping prongs 2 designed to penetrate theulog to be sewed. A
3 designates a slide block which is mounted to move longitudinally on the stock 1 and DRAG-SAW.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV; 29, 19,10, Applieetion filed January 16; 1908. Serial No. 411,187.
i which may be held atthe required adjust-v ment'thereon by av set screw 4f( Arelatively 'movable clamping arm 5 is pivotally mounted on the slide block 3 and is operatively connected to a hand lever 6 by which th'e said clamping arm 5 may be swung into operative engagement with the log, as clearly illustrated in the drawings, V the 'extremity of said arm being formed with a spur as shown. In order to adapt the clam-ping arms for logs of different diameters, a guide 7 is pivoted to the slide block 3, andaclam ing screw 8 works through' the movab e clamping arm 5 and is receivedin the -slot arm 5 at the proper adjustment.
A vertically disposed case 9 is secured to or formed on the stock 1', and the4 stock is a drive shaft`11 is journaled. "lhe rea'i` end of the drive shaft 11 may be formed with one section 12 of a universal joint, or' otherwise vadapted for connection with a source of power (not shown), whatever l'the'sarne may be. At its oppositev end, the vdrive shaft 11 is provided with a bevelpinion 13 meshing with the miter gear wlieel'lel mounted within the case 9. r1`he ear wheel 14 shaft is aspur pinion 16 which meshes with 17 secured by bolts or rivets to the rear end of the saw blade 18.
In order to properly guide the rack frame 17 on the spur pinion 16, an arm is secured to the shaft 15 outside of the pinion 16, and projects upwardly' from the plni'on and carries at its upper end a roller 19 designed to bear against the outer side of the frame 17. Another arm projects forwardly from. and is pivoted to the shaft of. the roller 19, said last named arm carrying at its forward-end a side of the frame. A contractile spring, 21 is connected to a. pin projecting outwardly from the forward end of said last named armpand also tothe bearing for the outer end of the shaft 15, the roller 2O being yieldingly rack frame in the gyratory movement that is imparted to the saw.
proper contact with the log as the incision deepens, I provide a presser arm 22 which 1s pivoted at its rear end to the ca se 9 and of said vguide so as to sec'ure"the clamping provided beyond and in the rear of saidA case with a tubular extension 10 in which is secured on a' shaft 15,A and on the same the interior teeth of an endless rack frame l roller .20 which also bears against the outerl mounted'thereby so as to pass the end of theA In order to maintain the saw blade 18 in? which is provided at its forward or free end with a grooved roller 23 bearing on the upper edge of the saw blade. The tension spring 24 is secured to the stock orncase at one end, and to the arm 22 at its other end so as to pull down on the arm and exert the proper tension on the blade.
A collar-25 is secured on the rear end of `,the tubular extension l0 of the stock, and
4designed to be embedded in the ground or other support and provided with means for holding the shaft 11 at the roper elevation, with the standard and qua rant at the necessary inclination with respect to the quadrant andlegs as may be necessary to the inclination of the ground where the device is installed.
vIn the practical operation of my improved v sawing apparatus, it will be understood that power applied to the shaft 1l will rotate the same through the `instrumentality of the bevel pinion 13 andmiter gear "wheel 4 and will drive the shaft l-soas to rotate the spur pinion 1 6 and effect a reciprocating'and vibratory 'movement of the saw blade to saw the log. .As the blade cuts into the log,'it will press downwardly to maintain a proper cutting action by means of the presser arm 2Q. Manifestly the apparatus is susceptible to use on logs of diderent sizes, by thc adjustment rendered possible by the slide block 13 and the pivoted clamping arm Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as ne'w is:
1. A sawing apparatus of the character described, comprising a stock adapted to be secured at one end to a log, a slide block mounted on said stock, means for holding saidblock at different adjustments on thev stock, a movable 'clamping arm pivotally inountedon the slide block, a hand lever for described, comprising a stock, means for sup-l porting said stock in operative relation to a log, a case secured to said stock, the stock being provided beyond the case with a tubular extension, a shaft journaled in said extension, a bevel pinion secured'to one end of said shaft, another shaft journaled in the case, a ruiter wheel mounted on said last named shaft and meshing with the pinion,'a spur pinion secured to said last named shaft,
a blade, anv endless rack frame secured to the rear end of the saw blade, and two roller's adapted to tra-vel on the outside of the saw frame, one ofsaid rollers having a connection with the last named shaft, and-the other roller being yieldingly mounted, as and for the purpose set forth.
' 3. A sawing apparatus of the character described, comprising a stock, means for supporting said stock in operative relation to a log, a case secured to said stock, a shaft journaled in said case, means for turnin said shaft, a spur pinion secured to saidAr shaft, a blade, an endless rack frame With interior teeth, said frame being secured to the rear end of the blade, the pinion mesh-v ing with said rack, a roller carried by said arm and bearing upon the outer surface of the rack, a forwardly projecting arm pivoted to the first named arm, a. roller carried by the forwardly projecting arm and also bearing against the outer side of the rack, and a contractile spring secured to said last named armand arranged to hold the' last named roller under tension against the outer surface of the rack.-
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
