- 1 indicates a rotary die carrier carrying dies 2 arranged to slide through the carrier and normally moving between plates 3 fixed to the frame 4.
- This carrier brings the dies opposite an opening 5 in the upper plate, and also opposite a punch 6 arranged above an impression plate 7 which is connected with the diecarrier to rotate therewith.
- the die carrier is on a vertical shaft 8 which is constantly rotated, and between this shaft and the die carrier, clutch mechanism is employed, so that the die carrier may be arrested for the bringing together of the mating dies.
- the series of dies carried by the die carrier 1 are of intaglio form. They cooperate with a single rilievo die 9. This latter die is carried in an arm 10 depending from an upper bearing 11 of the frame in which the vertical post is held.
- the clutch which connects the constantly revolving member with the rotary accomcarrier is operated from a. series of pins 12 arranged to slide through a ring 13 fixed to the frame in any suitz'illust manner, the said pins being operated from key levers and being projector above the ring into the path of a clutch (narrating lover or yielding stop 1-1.
- This yielding stop is pivoted to a block, box or casing 15, which is bolted to the underside of the iin 'iression plate 7.
- This yielding stop has one of its arms in the path of the pins 1.2, and its other arm engages the bifurcated end of a sliding clutch plate 16, this sliding clutch plate being carried by the box or casing before described, and rotating constantly with the impression plate to which, as above stated, the rotary carrier is connected.
- This sliding clutch plate has a double tooth portion, the inner tooth 17 cooperating with a clutch tooth 18 which is rigidly fixed to the central shaft 8, this clutch tooth being on a ring-shaped member fixed to the said shaft;
- the sliding clutch member 16 also has an outer tooth 19 adapted to engage any one of a series of teeth or notches 20 in the ring 13.
- the sliding clutch member 1.6 is held in such a position by pressure of the spring 21 arranged in a socket of the said sliding clutch plate, and bearing upon a fixed arm 22 of the box or casing 15, that the inner clutch tooth 17 will lie in the path of and be engaged by the constantly revolving 'clut-ch tooth 18 connected with the rotating shaft, and when the sliding clutch plate is in this position, the outer tooth 19 thereof will be disengaged from the teeth or notches 20 on the inner side of the fixed pin ring.
- I employ, in the present case, an impression plate adapted to be lifted by the action of a constantly rotating cam indicated at 24, this cam being brought into action, by the con stantly rotating shaft to which it is secured, immediately upon'the disconnection of the impression plate and the die carrier from the constantly rotating shaft or member, and when this cam performs its function, the impression plate, together with the punch 6, is lifted to raise the intaglio die to cooperate with the mating die to make the impression.
- the die carrier 1 is also adapted to move vertically, it sliding, for this purpose, on all of those dies which now lie between the two plates 3 fixed to the frame.
- the impression plate as in the applications above referred to, is provided with a series of notches on its periphery adapted to cooperate with a centering finger or detent 25 fixed on the frame, so that the impression plate, together with the rotary die carrier, will be held accurately in position while the impression is being made.
- Suitable clearance must be provided between the upper surface of the impression plate and the under surface of the detent for the free rotation of the said impression plate, and it may sometimes happen, unless special provision is made to prevent such action, that when one of the pins 12 has been accidentally or improperly operated to project, say, only about one-sixty-fourth of an inch above the upper surface of the ring in which they are guided, the yielding stop 14 will, nevertheless, be operated, and the impression plate will thereby be disconnected from the rotary shaft and will immediately be lifted by the cam to make the impression.
- the yielding stop will be released from the improperly operated pin 12 and the impression plate will then be free from control until its notch is engaged by the detent 25, but as this may be an appreciable space of time, the impression plate might overthrow or underthrow or become disalined in respect to the detent, so that, upon its further rise under the action of the cam, it would strike the detent on its upper surface instead of engaging the same with its tooth space, and this would cause a jam and possibly breakage of the machine.
- the sliding clutch member 16 in my present improvement, has been provided with the outer tooth 19 which, in the act of unclutching the parts, engages immediately the tooth or notch on the inner side of the pin guidin ring, thus insuring the proper centering o the released impression plate in relation to its detent in order that the die carrier may be arrested accurately in position, and also that the impression plate, when it is raised to make the impression, will enga e with the detent and be properly centered for this purpose.
- notches on the inner side of the pin ring are separated from each other, and have plain cylindrical portions of the inner periphery of the ring between them, so that if, from any cause, an obstruction should be placed in the pathway of the yielding stop 14- at a point mid way between the teeth 20, the point of the outer tooth 19 of the sliding clutch member will strike against the portion of the pin ring lying between the notches, and thus prevent disengaging of the clutch until the proper moment, when the clutch tooth engages the notch in the pin ring.
- the sliding clutch member has an inclined cam shaped tooth 26 projecting inwardly therefrom, and this is designed to cooperate with the clutch tooth 18 connected with the constantly rotating shaft, so that, after the impression plate and carrier have been released to make the impression, and again lowered, the sliding clutch member will be positively returned to its active position to connect the impression plate with the constantly rotating shaft, this action being due to the contact of the revolving clutch tooth 18 with the incline or cam shaped tooth 26 on the sliding clutch plate.
- I employ a series of intaglio dies carried by a rotary member, each of which intaglio dies is adapted to cooperate With a rilievo die, the former dies being marked 2 and the single rilievo die bein marked 9. This latter die is held in fixed position in the frame.

This enables the punch or rilievo (lie to bring into the intaglio die a suliicient amount of metal to raise any type character desired, the engraving for the type being, of course, at the bottom of the intaglio die.
- Fig. 7 I show in outline an arrangement in which the die carriers are coaxially arranged, the two die carriers 1 and 1 be ing substantial duplicates of each other and, like the coaxial carriers of my previous application, being connected together by a clutch 1, so that the upper carrier will be driven from the lower carrier, constantly rotary cam means 27 being provided to force the upper impression plate 28 punch 29 and die carrier downwardly when arrested to close with the lower die, which is likewise 'moved upwardly by its rotary cam when said die carrier is released from the constantly rotating member through the action of the keys, pins and clutch.
- the die carrier and impression plate are moved to make the impression, and then returned by the action ot the cam shown in detail in Fig. 125.
- This cam acts upon a. eorrespomling cam l'aced member Ell. (amnected to the die :arricr or impression plate 32 secured to the box or casing 15 or l5 by pins 34-.
- Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive cooperating parts such as the cam Q-t", clutch members l0 and 1H, impression plate 7* and punch (3 and registering stop similar to parts and their arraiigen'ient to those disclosed in my previous application aboverelerred to.
- These parts may be used with a second rotary carrier arranged either coaxially therewith or at right angles thereto, as shown in said ap 'ilieation, or with a. single die such as illustrated.
- the feed or holding means for the blanks shown at the right of Fig. 1 may be used with any of the modified forms of my invention disclosed.
- I claim 1 In combination in a. machine ol the class described, a rotary die carrier, an impression plate and punch, a constantly rotating member, a clutch between the said impression plate and the constantly rotating member, a fixed notched ring, said clutch comprising a movable member for disengaging the impression plate from the constantly rotating member and at the same time engaging it with the fixed ring, substantially as described.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
Application filed January 16, 1909, Serial No. 472,718. Renewed April 12, 1910. Serial No. 555,103.
To all whom it may concern.
lie it known that l, Cinemas ()wnNs, citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga .l .-n1'1essce, have invented certain ne and useful linpro\-'e1nents in Emboss ing-hlachincs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the general form of machine disclosed in applications for Letters Patent of the United States tiled by me October 2, 1907 and July 31, 1908, #395,656 and #446,336, my present improvement concerning particularly features relating to the anton'iatic clutch for controlling the rotary die carrier, and also to features relating to the dies.
The invention is shown in the panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. central vertical sectional view through a portion of the machine with parts in elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clutch 1]1QCl1El111S111 substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the movable clutch member detached; Fig. 4 is a detail view of a part of the impression plate; Fig. 5 is a. detail view of the edge of the impression plate. Figs. 6 and 7 show different arrangen'ients of die carriers; Figs. 8 to 12 show that features of my invention may he carried out. with a. form of carrier and other parts like those of my previous application #395,656; Figs. 13 and 14 are views of details.
In these drawings, 1 indicates a rotary die carrier carrying dies 2 arranged to slide through the carrier and normally moving between plates 3 fixed to the frame 4. This carrier brings the dies opposite an opening 5 in the upper plate, and also opposite a punch 6 arranged above an impression plate 7 which is connected with the diecarrier to rotate therewith. The die carrier is on a vertical shaft 8 which is constantly rotated, and between this shaft and the die carrier, clutch mechanism is employed, so that the die carrier may be arrested for the bringing together of the mating dies. The series of dies carried by the die carrier 1 are of intaglio form. They cooperate with a single rilievo die 9. This latter die is carried in an arm 10 depending from an upper bearing 11 of the frame in which the vertical post is held. The clutch which connects the constantly revolving member with the rotary accomcarrier is operated from a. series of pins 12 arranged to slide through a ring 13 fixed to the frame in any suitz'iliile manner, the said pins being operated from key levers and being projector above the ring into the path of a clutch (narrating lover or yielding stop 1-1. This yielding stop is pivoted to a block, box or casing 15, which is bolted to the underside of the iin 'iression plate 7. This yielding stop has one of its arms in the path of the pins 1.2, and its other arm engages the bifurcated end of a sliding clutch plate 16, this sliding clutch plate being carried by the box or casing before described, and rotating constantly with the impression plate to which, as above stated, the rotary carrier is connected. This sliding clutch plate has a double tooth portion, the inner tooth 17 cooperating with a clutch tooth 18 which is rigidly fixed to the central shaft 8, this clutch tooth being on a ring-shaped member fixed to the said shaft; The sliding clutch member 16 also has an outer tooth 19 adapted to engage any one of a series of teeth or notches 20 in the ring 13.
Normally, the sliding clutch member 1.6 is held in such a position by pressure of the spring 21 arranged in a socket of the said sliding clutch plate, and bearing upon a fixed arm 22 of the box or casing 15, that the inner clutch tooth 17 will lie in the path of and be engaged by the constantly revolving 'clut-ch tooth 18 connected with the rotating shaft, and when the sliding clutch plate is in this position, the outer tooth 19 thereof will be disengaged from the teeth or notches 20 on the inner side of the fixed pin ring. When, however, one of the pins 12 is projected upwardly by striking the appropriate key lever corresponding to the die which it is desired to bring into action, the yielding stop 14 will engage the said pin and the sliding clutch plate will be moved in its guides 23 of the box or casing 15, so that the clutch tooth 17 will be drawn from engagement with the constantly rotating clutch tooth 18 and, at the same time, the outer clutch tooth 19 Will engage with the appropriate notch 20 on the inner side of the pin carrying ring which, as above stated, is fixed to the frame. In this way the impression plate, together with the rotary die carrier connected therewith, will be disconnected from the constantly rotating member or shaft, and will be arrested in proper position for the die action. As in the applications above mentioned, I employ, in the present case, an impression plate adapted to be lifted by the action of a constantly rotating cam indicated at 24, this cam being brought into action, by the con stantly rotating shaft to which it is secured, immediately upon'the disconnection of the impression plate and the die carrier from the constantly rotating shaft or member, and when this cam performs its function, the impression plate, together with the punch 6, is lifted to raise the intaglio die to cooperate with the mating die to make the impression. On this action the die carrier 1 is also adapted to move vertically, it sliding, for this purpose, on all of those dies which now lie between the two plates 3 fixed to the frame.
The impression plate, as in the applications above referred to, is provided with a series of notches on its periphery adapted to cooperate with a centering finger or detent 25 fixed on the frame, so that the impression plate, together with the rotary die carrier, will be held accurately in position while the impression is being made. Suitable clearance must be provided between the upper surface of the impression plate and the under surface of the detent for the free rotation of the said impression plate, and it may sometimes happen, unless special provision is made to prevent such action, that when one of the pins 12 has been accidentally or improperly operated to project, say, only about one-sixty-fourth of an inch above the upper surface of the ring in which they are guided, the yielding stop 14 will, nevertheless, be operated, and the impression plate will thereby be disconnected from the rotary shaft and will immediately be lifted by the cam to make the impression. As soon as it has lifted, however, the slight distance mentioned, the yielding stop will be released from the improperly operated pin 12 and the impression plate will then be free from control until its notch is engaged by the detent 25, but as this may be an appreciable space of time, the impression plate might overthrow or underthrow or become disalined in respect to the detent, so that, upon its further rise under the action of the cam, it would strike the detent on its upper surface instead of engaging the same with its tooth space, and this would cause a jam and possibly breakage of the machine. In order to prevent this action, the sliding clutch member 16, in my present improvement, has been provided with the outer tooth 19 which, in the act of unclutching the parts, engages immediately the tooth or notch on the inner side of the pin guidin ring, thus insuring the proper centering o the released impression plate in relation to its detent in order that the die carrier may be arrested accurately in position, and also that the impression plate, when it is raised to make the impression, will enga e with the detent and be properly centered for this purpose.
It will be noticed that the outer clutch tooth 19 of the sliding clutch plate 16 always hes close against the inner surface of the pin ring when the impression plate, together with the die carrier, is being rotated, so that a very slight movement of the clutch plate 1.6 will throw its outer tooth in position to engage the tooth on the pin ring.
It will be observed that the notches on the inner side of the pin ring are separated from each other, and have plain cylindrical portions of the inner periphery of the ring between them, so that if, from any cause, an obstruction should be placed in the pathway of the yielding stop 14- at a point mid way between the teeth 20, the point of the outer tooth 19 of the sliding clutch member will strike against the portion of the pin ring lying between the notches, and thus prevent disengaging of the clutch until the proper moment, when the clutch tooth engages the notch in the pin ring. In other words, it is impossible to release the inner tooth 17 of the sliding clutch member from the clutch tooth 18 of the constantly rotating shaft unless the outer tooth 19 of the sliding clutch member engages with one of the notches of the pin ring, and when this engagement does take place, the corresponding notch at the periphery of the impression plate will be properly positioned beneath the alinement detent 25, in which position the impression plate will be held until the cam has raised it into full engagement with the said detent The sliding clutch member has an inclined cam shaped tooth 26 projecting inwardly therefrom, and this is designed to cooperate with the clutch tooth 18 connected with the constantly rotating shaft, so that, after the impression plate and carrier have been released to make the impression, and again lowered, the sliding clutch member will be positively returned to its active position to connect the impression plate with the constantly rotating shaft, this action being due to the contact of the revolving clutch tooth 18 with the incline or cam shaped tooth 26 on the sliding clutch plate. By the action of these parts, the sliding clutch plate is returned to its active position so as to make the inner clutch tooth 17 engage with the constantly rotating clutch tooth 18 and, at the same time, to disengage the outer tooth 19 from the notch 20 of the fixed pin ring.
As above stated, I employ a series of intaglio dies carried by a rotary member, each of which intaglio dies is adapted to cooperate With a rilievo die, the former dies being marked 2 and the single rilievo die bein marked 9. This latter die is held in fixed position in the frame. In order to use a single die in connection with the mating intaglio (lies, the first or roughing out cut in the intaglio dies is made from exactly the same copy. This enables the punch or rilievo (lie to bring into the intaglio die a suliicient amount of metal to raise any type character desired, the engraving for the type being, of course, at the bottom of the intaglio die. This construction is intended to be used more especially where a low type or en'ibossed surface is to be raised, though I do not limit myself in this respect. As shown in Fig. 5, the peripheral notches oi the impress-ion plate are flared upwardly to insure proper engagement with the detent.
It will be imderstood that I do not limit myself to the arrangement shown, in which a single lixed die cooperates with a plurality of mating dies on. a rotary carrier. ()n the contrary, I wish it understood that my present in'il'irovements may be eml'iodied in these forms of machines invented by me and dis closedin the. apl'ilications above described, in which two rotary die carriers are employed arranged either at right angles to each other or coaxially, my said prior inventions having also the features disclosed herein oi the rotary die carrier having the dies movable therethrough parallel with the axis of rotation, with a clutch device connecting the carrier with a constantly rotating member whereby, upon operating keys, pins will be set to throw out the clutch, arrest the carrier, and, through a constantly rotating coaxial cam closing of the dies is effected through an impression plate and a punch. My present ma chine, like my former inventions disclosed in said applications, includes all of the broad features referred to above.
I show, in Fig. 6, a form of my machine in which two rotary die carriers are em ployed, the carrier 1 being arranged at right angles to the carrier 1 and driven in unison therewith through the gearing ,1 connected with the rotary die carrier through a clutch 1". I have not thought it necessary to illustrate the rotary die carrier mechanism in its entirety, as this is of the form shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. In both this term and the one shown in Fig. l, the die carrier and impression plate are moved to make the impression, and then returned by the action ot the cam shown in detail in Fig. 125. This cam acts upon a. eorrespomling cam l'aced member Ell. (amnected to the die :arricr or impression plate 32 secured to the box or casing 15 or l5 by pins 34-.
I show in Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive cooperating parts, such as the cam Q-t", clutch members l0 and 1H, impression plate 7* and punch (3 and registering stop similar to parts and their arraiigen'ient to those disclosed in my previous application aboverelerred to. These parts may be used with a second rotary carrier arranged either coaxially therewith or at right angles thereto, as shown in said ap 'ilieation, or with a. single die such as illustrated. The feed or holding means for the blanks shown at the right of Fig. 1 may be used with any of the modified forms of my invention disclosed.
I claim 1. In combination in a. machine ol the class described, a rotary die carrier, an impression plate and punch, a constantly rotating member, a clutch between the said impression plate and the constantly rotating member, a fixed notched ring, said clutch comprising a movable member for disengaging the impression plate from the constantly rotating member and at the same time engaging it with the fixed ring, substantially as described.
52.
