Be a known that I, EARL. A'TeEY, a citizen of the Umted States, residing at Uvalde, 1n the county of Uvalde and State of Texas have invented a new and useful Clamp, of
' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices employed for connectlng a hoisting line to a well casing or tubing which is to be raised or lowered in the well. 1
It is the object of the inventionto provide a device of this kind which is strong and easily handled, it being constructed so that it can be readily applied to or removed from the casing, without removing it from the bails to which thehoisting line is connected.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel form of clamp constructed and operating as hereinafter specified.
The invention is illustrated .in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2. are elevations of the clamp taken at right angles. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the clamp with parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the .line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, it will beseen' that the clamp comprises two jaw members 7 and 8, respectively, each of which is semicircular, so that when they are closed around .the casing or tubing to be elevated, the clatter is encircled by the two jaw members. The clamp will be applied to the casing, or tubing so that its upper end engages the shoulder on the outside thereof at its upper end, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby it is prevented from slipping down in the clamp, and is thus securely held.
Atone end of the jaw member 7 is an outstanding ear 9 having an aperture 10 into which extends a hinge knuckle 11 formed on the corresponding end of the jaw member 8. A pin 12 passing into the'ear 9, and through the knuckle 11, provides a hinge connection between the two jaw members. The ear 9 and the knuckle 11 are cut away adjacent to the inner surface of the jaw v members to form two shoulders 13 which come together when the jaw members are closed.
On that end of the jaw member 7 opposite the end from which the ear 9 extends, is an outstanding ear 14, and on the corresponding end of the jaw member 8 is an outstanding ear 15. That side of the ear 14 which ing through a slot 18 in the ear 9, and the other bail passing through a slot 19 in the ear 14, a continuation of the last mentioned slot being had in the ear 15 by a registering recess in its outer edge. The two slots extend transversely of the pivotal axis of the jaws and the bails are movable therein. In the car 14 is a vertical opening into which is adapted to be inserted a pin 20, the length of theopening and the "pin being such, and the opening being so located that the pin, when inserted into the opening, extends across the'slot 19. The purpose of this will be presently made clear.
The length and location of the slots 18 and 19 are such that when the bails 17 are at the inner ends thereof, one of'said bails extends across the' hinge joint, one side of the bail being located on one side of the ear 9, and the other side of the bail extending-across the outer surface of the hinge knuckle 11. One side of the other bail extends along one side of the car 14, and the other side of the bail extends along side the ear 15; By locating the .two bails as herein described, said bails also serve to lock the jaws in closed position around the casing or tubing. It will be evident from an 1nspection of Figs. 3 and 4 that the jaw mem-, bers may be swung open by 'movlng the lower ends of the bails outwardly in the respective slots until they clear the hinge joint and the meeting ends of the cars .14 and 15. The pin 20 is so-located in the slot 19 that it holdsthe bail passing through said slot in locking position. ends of the ears 14 and 15, and after the other bail is slipped outwardly in theslot' 18, the jaw members may be opened to release the casingor tubing. It will be noted that the release is effected without" removing the hails from the hoisting device, which is a distinct advantage where the casing or tubing has to be taken ofl up in the derrick as is often the case in pulling and putting in long strings ofcasings in deep oil and water wells The jaw members may ,also be opened by swinging the bails outwardly at the top until they assume a horizontal position.
The device herein described is strong and durable, and easily handled, it being readily applied to or removed from thecasing or tubing, and when applied thereto and locked by the bails as descrlbed, it will be securely held in place, without danger-of becoming unlocked and thus dropping the parts to be elevated or lowered.
What is' claimed is:
1. A. device of the character described comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, the free end of one of said jaws having a recess into which the free end of the other connected to opposite sides of the jaws, one" of said bails extending) through the aforesaid slot, and being mova 1e to enter the recess, and a pin passing through the slot on one side of the bail, for locking the same in the jaws, one of said bails bein mounted in the aforesaid slot, and movab e therein to extend across the joint between the jaws.
I 3. A device of the character described,
comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, and bails connected to opposite sides thereof, the free ends of the jaws having a slot crossing the joint therebetween, and said slot extending transversely with respect to the pivotal axls of the jaws, one ofthe bails bemg mounted in the slot, and movable therein to extend across the aforesaid joint.
