Description
G. ARTHUR. COMBINED OIL CAN AND LUBRICATOR. APPLICATION FILED MAR 21, 1910:
Patented Nov. 22, 1910.
ATTORNEY mr: mum's PETERS C0,, w4smua1ou, n. c.
CHARLES ARTHUR, OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED OIL-CAN AND LUBRICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1910.
Application filed. March 21, 1910. Serial No. 551,790.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ARTHUR, of No. 2240 California street, in the city of Eureka, in the county of Humboldt, State of California, have invented a new or Improved Combined Oil-Can and Lubricator, of which the following is a clear and exact specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
My invention relates to a combination oil can and lubricator, and the object thereof is to provide a device by means of which oil may be applied through a nozzle to the bearings of machinery in the ordinary manner in which such devices are used, and to provide a lubricator which will cover the nozzle when the device is not in use, and which may be used for lubricating flat surfaces in an eX- peditious manner. I accomplish these objects by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical central section of my improved oil can and lubricator. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same.
In the drawings 1 is a vessel or receptacle for holding a supply of lubricating fluid. This receptacle is preferably provided with a flexible or spring bottom 2. The top 3 of the vessel is preferably flat and in the center thereof is secured a short nozzle 10 over which is slipped the lubricating nozzle 9 which is of ordinary construction, being shown in the drawings as conical. Upon the top of the receptacle is secured a collar 4: preferably circular, within which snugly fits a shallow cup shaped vessel 5 which is provided with a hollow handle 6, the outer end of which is closed by a cap 8. Cup 5 and its handle 6, when the cup is placed in the collar 4t as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, forms a cover for the nozzle. Cup 5 is filled with fibrous material 7 such as cloth or car pet orsponge, or other porous material and has a central aperture therein which when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1, surrounds the nozzle of the oil receptacle. I/Vhen it is desired to use the oil can, as in oiling a bearing, the cap 8 is removed from the handle 6, allowing the nozzle 9 to protrude, and the receptacle is used in the ordinary manner. When it is desired to oil a flat surface, such as a reciprocating or circular saw, the cup could be placed upon the receptacle as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The receptacle would then be tilted over and a suflicient quantity of oil forced out of the nozzle to saturate the fibrous material in the cup. The cup would then be removed from the receptacle and the fibrous material would be applied to the surface which it is desired to have oiled. If desired, however, the cup could be removed and the oil applied to the fibrous material by forcing out a quantity through the nozzle upon such material as is done in forcing the oil out in the ordinary applications.
By this construction it will be observed that I have provided an oil can for ordinary use, and a lubricator which applies the lubrieating fluid quickly andevenly to a flat surface and without any danger of wasting any of the same, and that such lubricator forms a protective covering for the nozzle of the oil receptacle when the device is not in use.
Having described my invention what I claim is;
1. An oil can having an upwardly projecting nozzle, a collar upon the top of said can; a lubricator comprising a shallow cup adapted to snugly fit within said collar; a hollow handle secured to said cup a cap for said handle, said cup and handle being adapted to surround and inclose the projecting portion of the nozzle; and fibrous material having a central aperture therein in said cup.
2. The combination of an oil can having a nozzle; and a lubricator comprising a shallow cup having a hollow handle with fibrous material in said cup, the said lubricator forming a protective covering for the nozzle of the oil can when placed thereon.
In testimony whereof, I, the said CHARLES ARTHUR, have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES ARTHUR.
Witnesses:
