Description
new aaw cit t me DEG-L Ar, or rAnIs; FRANCE.
I 13mm Patent No. 97,613, dated December 7, 1869.
\ lminovnnenrsmrus P012 TREATING- cnow AND OTHERJDISEASEEE 'ihe Schedule referred to in thes e Letters Patent and making pm f h P 1batlwhom'itmag concern i Be it known that I, GILBERT DncLA'r, of Paris,
flFrance, have invented a new and improved Anti- Oroup'Apparatus; andI. do herebydeclare that the W following is a-fnll and exact description thereof.
'lhe nature of my invention consists insuringthe croup by the action of breathing the-vapors of difi'erent ingredientshereindescribed, and which vapors are produced by anyproper apparatus or any kind ot'cdamp- I steam pulverizator;
In 1865,1-publishda book, in which I indicated carbolic acid as a new medicine, possessing the propc ty of curing parasitic and infectious diseases, espe cally the croup, diphtheria, angina, (malignant and 1 gangrenous the diseases of the chest, the generality of the skin-diseases,&c. l Since then, I- have modified the processof employ-f ing carbolic acid in the abovedise'ases, and I am y. now convinced that all parasitic substances, c arbolic acid, certain mercurial fsalts, iodine, snlplnnyncamphor, &c., generally actwith more elficacy and rapidity when they-are introduced into the system by inhalation, or into the pores of. the skin. by wet fn'migations produced by the said ingredients.
The processI employ to curel the croup 'is as fol lows: W
lWhen the water, placed in the bowl of theapp'ara- -tus, is at boiling poiut, add, every two hours, one teaspoonful of the solution No. 1, and one of the compound mixtureNo. 2. "lhewatermust be kept always a boiling.
SolutioriNo. 1 is a strongly-concentrated alcoholic solution of carbolic' acid, (alcohol, fifteen parts; carbolic acid, eighty-five parts.) I v MixtureNo. 2, a mixture of one and one-fourth drachm of ci nnabar, or sulphnret of mercury, or any I other salt'of mercury,of copper, &c., and from onehalf to .one drachm of parasitic powders, such as the gnaeo, akentobo, juniper-berry, Spanish chamomile, &c. i
I Owing to the rapid progress ofthe croup, it may appear at firstsight thatthis process presents several inconveniences, such as the difliculty ot' finding at once, and at thesame druggists, the difi'erentiugredicuts and the proper apparatus.
Having foreseen these diflicult ies I have found the remedy by" combininga boxlthat contains all that is requisite for theoperat'ion, and I shall publish its contents in the medical papers, so that all parents desirons'of having in store a sure cure for the croup, may
find no difliculty in doing so.
Description of (mnAriti Group fl'pparat'us.
The box above mentioned should. contain, first, a a
holder combined in such a manner as to following advantages:
First, it must be very solid, and made so as to be 'Third, it must secure the above lamppeither by means of a'hole or by claws, so that th e lamp may not be thrown over by the patient 'or'th'e'nurse.
Fourth, it must hold fast, and at aproper distance over-the lamp, a bowl in which the water and ingredients are to be boiled. 5
Fifth, it must act like a chimney, so, that the cold air may come from below, and that the hot air may surronndthe bowl, and keep the contents in a continlial boiling state, without any danger ofthe contents of the lamp exploding.
To obtain the above results, I have adopted-,- First, an alcoholic lamp with one or more burners, in preference to a-lamp with three burners. Second, a bowl witha wide opening, so as to have a large surface of evaporation; this'bowl to be made of fire-proof porcelain, ofwarnished clay, or of iron, (not tinned inside,) on account of the action of the ingredie'nts. Hitherto I prefer the latter.
Moreover, the box nlnst contain- First, several glass tubes to stir up the mixture' Second, the required ingredients. 7 Third, several doses of the powder and sirnp of i-pecacuanhafthe sirup to be slightly dosed with carbolic acid, so that it may not ferment and lose its,
'qualities by keeping.
scribed hereafter, (which vapors are produced by any proper apparatus,) to cure the cronp, diphtheria, angina, (malignant and gangrenous,) the diseases of the chest, the generality, of the diseases of the skin, 850,,
or any other,\substantially the same. and which will produce the intended effect.
