MASSAGING APPARATUS.
New York,-State of New York, have 111- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Massaging Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention 'rclates'to massaging apparatus, moreparticularly to apparatus of this character employed for imparting massaging action to portionsof the face, and
has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed apparatus whereby a massaging action may be produced through the operation of suitably; arranged pull cables,
the pull cables being located in convenient position for manipulation by the hands of the wearer.
i'tnother'object of the invention is to vide an improved construction of the ricwhi'ch is flexible in all directions and adapts itself tothe contour of the face.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features 'of construction as hereinafter shown and V -(]SCI'1bd and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
The improved apparatus is designed more particularly for use beneath the chin, but
may be employed upon other parts of the body if preferrcd, but for the purpose of illustration is shown arranged for use upon the face beneath |the chin, for removing superfluous flesh.
In the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention,,Fi'gure l is a side elevation'of the improved apparatus upplic'lh-l ig. 2 isa front elevation of the traling the construction of a portion of the modification in the manner of operating the.
device. Fig,- 6 is an enlarged detail illusfiexible massage member.
The im proved apparatus comprises in general a flexible massage member carrying a formly spaced apart.
are provided with sleeves between the ball I thereon, as represented at 22, to maintain the plurality of rotating massage balls, guide Specification or Letters latent. Patented- NOV. 15, 1910. Application filed March 28, 1910. Serial No. 551,986.
cables adapted to be supported upon the per- 1 son of the wearer, and pull cables connected 'to the flexible massage member and leading over the pulle s. The flexible massage member consists 0 end frames each consisting of a plate 10 having cars '11 extending 1nwardly therefrom at the ends and with a cylindrical member '12 extending above the plate. The plates with their cars will be located at the ends of the flexible massage member and with the ears directed inwardly, and connected atqtheir ends within the -ears areflexible 1 side" members 13-44, preferably formedof leather or like material. A rod 15 is extended through each opposite pair of the ears andlikewise through the portion of the. side members which are located between the ears, as shown, to rigidly couple the end frames to the side members. Each of the plates 10 is provided with an outwardly directed headed pin 16 to receive the pull cables 17 as shown. The side members 13-44 are arranged to curve outwardl in opposite directions and are maintain in separated position by a'plurality of shafts,
18 spaced apart and of varying len the so' I that the side membersare supporte in an elongatedelliptical form, as shown in'F ig.
.3. Each. of the shafts 1.8 is provided with an enlargement at the ends, one of which is I represented at 19 .andwith a flange 20' bean in'g against the iiiner faces of the members 13-19 and thus maintaining the members in their distended position. By arranging the shafts 18 of varying lengths'as shown in Fig. 3, the sides are maintained in sym.
metrical shape,.as shown.
Mounted for rotation uponthe "shafts 18 are the friction producing balls 21 of any suitable material, but preferably of ivory, celluloid,-or similar material. The number of the balls upon the shafts vary with the length of the shaft, as shown, the three shafts nearest the center being each provided with four of the balls and' thenext two shafts toward the ends being provided with three balls each, the next-.pair of shafts being provided with two balls each,.and the terminal shafts provided with one ball each only. By this means theballs are arranged to practically fill the whole area between the side members, and are substantially un i-.
Certain of the shafts-' balls in suitable spacedrelations, and thus shafts which are provided with the spacers, to be maintained in' as shown at 33 in Fig. 2 just above 35 in their outer ends.
. nected to this curved plate at its lower, end
27- for extending over the head of the wearer cause theballs which are located upon the position opposite the s aces between the adjacent balls, so that t e continuity of the balls is somewhat broken to cause the surface upon which they are designed to be more uniformly acted .upon, as will be obvious. f
Each of the enlargements 19 of the shafts is provided with a small clamp bolt or threaded pin' 23 entered therein from outside the members 1314 toprevent the 'latter from outward movement. By this means the members 1314 are firmly clamped in position upon the shafts, while at the same time, their flexibility is not interfered with. The guide pulley supporting portion of the device com rises a metal plate 24 which bears over'the ead of the wearer, and conis a strap 25 which bears around the head of the wearer as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The strap 25is preferably ofleather and arranged with one end terminating centrally of the front and connected to another strap and connected at its end to'the strap 25 at the back. -The strap 27 is also coupled to the center ofthe metalband24r, as shown.
The other terminal of the strap'25 overlaps e the first mentioned terminal at the front, and
- is provided with means for adjustably couling the terminals of the strap so that the and may be adapted to heads of various sizes. An suitable coupling means may be employe but for the purpose of illustration a pair of pins 28 are shown attached to the strap 25 and the free end of the stra 25 is provided, with a plurality of spaces apertures 29 adapted to fit over the pins 28. One 'of the pins 28 is shown employed as the securing means between the straps 25 and 27.
The band 24 is coupled to the strap 25 at the lower edge of the latter only, as shown at 30 in Fig. 4, and connected at 31 to the strap 25 near its upper edge and opposite. the band 24 are pads 32 which bear against the head of the wearer about opposite his temples. The band 24 is bent inwardly v the pads 32, so that a space is left for the pads, while at the same time the upper portion of the band 24'bears. closely upon the head of the wearer Connected to the band 24 near its ends are brackets 34 having cable guide pulleys The pull cables 17 lead over the pulleys 35 from the pins 16 and are provided with suitable hand grip devices 30, as for instance balls, as shown I strap 25 plied may in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The brackets 32 are set slightly oblique as shown in Figs. .1, 2 and 1 5, so that the cables operate without lateral cramping. 'Each of the pull cables is.pro-
In applying and operating the device the band 24 1S placed over the head and the pads 32 in position against the temdples and the strap drawn relatively tight an secured by engaging the apertures 29 over the pins passes around the head with the 28. The pull cables l7 are then connected to the pin 16 of the friction applying massage member and the latter located beneath the chin as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The grip members 36 are then grasped by the hands of the alternately to move the friction vimparting portion back and forth beneath the chin.
wearer and motion applied The speed and the degree of ressure ap I be readily controlled ator, aswill be obvious.
portion of the face may be vigorously massaged, and the severity of the treatment r readily controlled by the operator, as, the
creased and the motion imparted as briskly or as lightly as required. If required a guard cloth or fabric may be worn between the face and the balls 21, to protect the face,
but-this feature is-not a part of the present inventionfand its employment is so obvious that it is not deemed necessary it. If required the pull cables 17 may be conducted over stationary pulleys located on a wall or ceiling similar to ordinary ex ercising pulleys employed in sanitariums and gymnasiums as illustrated in Fig. 5, but this arrangement does not affect the invention and is not a departure from the principle of the invention.
WVhile two, means for employing the device are illustrated, .it will be understood that the lnventlon is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes and modifications within the scope of the appended claims may be made without departing from the principle of the invention.
