PUNCH AND BOLT-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. lVEATl-IER- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Selmore, in the county of Christian and State of Missouri, have in vented a new and useful Punch and Bolt- Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand tools and has special reference to a combined punch and bolt cutter.
The principal object of the invention is to lmprove and simplify the construction of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the stem of the punch will constitute the actuating means for a movable cutter blade.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like char actors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :-Figure 1 is a side elevation from one side of the machine with the blades closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation from the other side of the machine with the blades and punch open. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the operating end of the device. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but showin the blades and punch closed.
The body of the invention comprises a shank 10 which has on one end a handle 11 and on the opposite end is provided with an angular extension 12 wherein is formed an opening 13 adapted to receive the end of a punch. Extending parallel to the member 12 and in spaced relation thereto there is provided an arm 14 and to this arm and the body 10 is secured a fixed blade 15. The arm 14 is so arranged that the blade 15 may lie flat against said arm and the side of the member 10. Secured to the blade 15 by means of one of the bolts 16 is a plate 17 which extends toward the handle 11 and the end adjacent the handle has a pivot bolt 18 passing therethrough and also through the body 10, the bolt being held in position by means of a suitable nut. On this pivot bolt is mounted a swinging blade 19 which is so arranged that the edge thereof may be Specification of Letters Patent.

brought into contact with the edge of the blade 15 as can clearly be seen by reference he arm 14 is provided with a suitable opening for the reception of the shank 27 of a punch holder, the shank and opening being of such dimensions that the shank is freely slidable in said opening. Furthermore, this opening is concentric with the opening 13 so that a punch 28 held in the holder may be made to pass into the opening 13 by proper movement of said holder. The end of the shank 27 opposite the punch 28 is flattened to form a head 29 and through this head and the slot 20 passes a bolt 30, the bolt being freely slidable in said slot. The head 29 is, furthermore, connected to the lever 24 by means of a bolt 31.
The body 10 is preferably made with the portion between the arm 21 and the handle 11 of rectangular cross section and of the same dimensions throughout. On this portion of the body is slidably mounted a stop member 32 having a suitable opening wherethrough the body passes and being provided with a set screw 33 so that the stop member can be positioned at any desired point along the body 10.
In the operation of the device the handles 11 and 23 are grasped and moved to the positions shown in Fig. 2. A sheet of metal is then inserted between the punch 28 and the member 12 or a sheet or bolt may be placed between the blades 15 and 19. The handles 11 and 23 are then forcibly brought together and the metal in either position will be severed. It is to be noted that the stop member 32 is so positioned that the handles 11 and 23 cannot be brought together sufficiently close to injure the edges of the blades 15 and 19. It will be seen also that the construction herein set forth provides for the shank 27 having the double function of a punch holder and of means to connect the lever 24 With the blade 19. In like manner the arm 14 constitutes a support for the blade 15 and a guide for the shank 27.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. In a tool of the class described, a body comprising a handled bar having an arm projecting laterally therefrom, said arm having an opening formed therethrough, a blade fixed to said arm and bar, a second blade pivoted to the bar to swing to and from the fixed blade and provided With a longitudinally extending slot, a lever pivoted intermediate its-ends to said bar and provided With a slot at one end, a member having a shank extending through the opening in said arm and slidable therein, a bolt passing through said member and the slot in the movable blade, a second bolt passing through said member and the end of the lever opposite the slot therein, a second arm projecting from said bar in the opposite direction to the first arm, a second lever fulcrumed to said second arm and provided With a handle,- and a third bolt passing through said second lever and the slot in the first lever.
2. In a tool of the class described, a body comprising a handled bar having an arm projecting laterally therefrom, said arm havin anopening formed therethrough, a
blade fixed to said arm and bar, a second blade pivoted to the bar to swing to and from the fixed blade and provided With a longitudinally extending slot, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said bar and provided With a slot at one end, a member having a shank extending through the opening in said arm and slidable therein, a bolt passing through said member and the slot in the movable blade, a second bolt passing through said member and the end of the lever opposite the slot therein, a second arm projecting from said bar in the opposite direction to the first arm, a second lever fulcrumed to said second arm and provided With a handle, a third bolt passing through said second lever and the slot in the first lever, a stop for the second lever slidable on said bar, and means to hold said stop in adjusted position on the bar.
