Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern:-
Be it known that I, AnoLPH MUoHLMs'rr, a citizen of the United States of America,
' and resident of No. 807 Maple avenue, Newport, county of Campbell, and State of Kentucky (post-office address, Fifth and Elm streets, in the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio) have invented an Improvement in Tool-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being hadwto the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to tool sharpeners and it has for its object the improvement in the construction of such devices whereby they are simplified and rendered more efficient.
The novelty of my invention consists in the combination and sub-combination of the parts as will be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure #1, is a view of my tool sharpener when it is used for facing a tool. Fig. #2, is a view of my tool sharpener when it is used for sharpening a tool. Fig. #3, shows the tool sharpener in position for either lapping or facing a punch. Fig. #4, is a vertical longitudinal section when the verniers are at zero. Fig. #5, is a vertical section through one foot showing ball bearing cage.

Referring to the drawings A represents a base on which the stone and tool grinder are placed when in operation. WVhen facing a tool, the stone B is placed on edge on the base as shown in Fig. #1. When doing any ordinary grinding the stone B, is placed flat as shown in Fig. #2 and #3. The face A of the base is made perfectly true and parallel with the face of the stone. The main frame of the tool holder O has two feet O in which are placed ball bearings O O Through the main frame O passes a vertical threaded standard D. The portion of the I main frame through which the standard D passes has a slot C in which is placed a nut D which is used for lowering and raising the standard D. The upper end of the stand ard D has a lock nut D for locking the standard in any position desired. The threaded portion of the standard D has a slot or key way D cut in it in which plays a pin D This pin is to prevent the standard D from turning when the nut D is turned for raising or lowering the standard. The upper end of the standard has a head D, through which passes a horizontal hole D In this hole D plays a spindle E which is a part of the horizontal arm E The outer end of the spindle E is threaded andv has a lock nut E On the opposite side of the head D from the lock nut E is a revolving thimble E*. This thimble is graduated in degrees and marks or zero points are placed on the head D and that portion of the arm E that comes in contact with the thimble E so that the arm E can be set at any angle to the head D desired. In the outer end of the arm E there is a head F. The outer end of the arm E has a vertical hole E in which a spindle F plays. On the upper end of the spindle F there is a lock nut F On the lower side of the spindle F next to the arm there is a graduated thimble F which is graduated in degrees so that the head F, can be set to any angle desired. The extreme lower part of the head F has a sliding piece F which is operated by a screw F. The screw when screwed in forces the sliding piece F toward the two studs F When the screw F is backed out, the spring F forces the sliding piece F back, following the screw F as it is backed out.
The operation of my tool grinder is as follows: The tool to be ground is placed in the head E and securely clamped by the screw F Then the head F and the arm E are adjusted to the desired angles, the threaded standard D raised to the height that is suited for the work to be done when the ball bearings, O O are placed on the face A and slid back and forward, the tool at the same time coming in contact with the stone B, when the tool will be ground to what ever angle it may be set for.
Having described my invention what I claim is,
The combination in a tool sharpener of a main frame, a vertical threaded standard, a horizontal arm, with a head for holding the tool, the head having a sliding piece operated by a screw and spring, with two stationary studs, all substantially as described.
