Be it known that I, PA L HARTMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of Berlin, German Em ire, have invented certain new and usefu Im rovements in Devices for Feeding Sheets, 0 which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved, device for feeding sheets one by one from a pile. This im roved device is applicable to a pasting mac ine with a continuous drive which in particular may be adapted for covering paste-boards of different sizes. In such a machine the boards 01'' sheets to be covered may be fed by hand or the machine may be arranged to cooperate with a mechanical device of any suitable type for feeding the paste-boards or sheets to be covered in whichcase the movements of the machine should be dependent upon those of the feeding device.

provided with a weight 17 which can be raised by a hand lever 26 and connecting cord. hen the lever 16 is raised, the whole frame with the box 11 falls as according to the constructional form illustrated as an example, the influence of the weight 17 is annulled. During this movement the point 9 also falls so that the cord 7 permits the table 1 to yield to the influence of the weight 3 tending to raise it. As therefore the box 10 owing to the rotation of the whole frame falls toward the horizontal position, the table 1 rises so that both parts come into contact, as shown ,in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The box 10 serves for raising the piled material on the table 1. To this end a partial vacuum is maintained in the interior thereof. According to the constructional form selected for illustration this takes place through a vibrating branch 18 of a vacuum pipe arranged centrally with respect to the ax1s'14. Asthe result of this partial vacuum which is communicated to the pile of material through the felt band 15 the uppermost leaf adheres to the felt band. ,The
felt band receives its movement from driving gear, for example from a constantly rotating wheel 20. A chain or cord 21 as shown being carried over a driving pulley 30 on the spindle of the roll 12 and a pulley 48. The movement of the felt band 15 does not commence, as will be described later until the box 10 has been raisedclear of the table 1, that,'is to say from'the pile of paper material. The sheet to be pasted on the aste board adhering to the under side of the felt band 15 is carried thereby and delivered to the delivery rolls 22. To insure this delivery, .a further device is provided. A guide 24 'provided with crank lever 25 and rotatin about an axis 23 is provided which yiel s' as the arts 10, 12 and 13 fall, as shown in dotted ines in Fi .3. When the parts again rise,'the s ind e of the roll 13 which 1s extended si ewise,
strikes the lever 25. Thereby the lever 24 is brought to bear evenly against the under surface of the web 15 and aflords the strip of material fed b this web a good support until it is grippe by the delivery rolls. In the moment in which the under ortion ofthe traveler 15 sinks upon the rising pile of material the movement of the traveler as alread mentioned is stopped. This takes place 1n the following manner :As soon as the lever 16 'by operating the hand lever 26' .has been raised, it strikes a crank arm 27.- To this crankarm a bar 28 is connected the free end 'of which is coupled to the movable portion 29 of a coupling which 1s normally held in gear bya spring 31.. mediately recommences. By this time the' partial vacuum in the box 10 hascaused the to sheet of the material td be lifted vertica y from the pile. The single sheet lifted from the feeding pile is transferred by the deliveryrolls'22 to'the roll 33 which is covered with adhesive .substance through the medium of an intermediate roll 32. Both rolls receive constant movement from the driving wheel 19. A suitable guiding device 34 which may consist of a suitably shaped scraper or ai'longitudinal series of scrapers insures the removal and reversal of the paper sheet, after reception of the adhesive substance, and the transfer of the same to ,atraveling web 35. When the top sheet of the'pile of material has been sucked up, the hand lever 26, according to the example illustrated is again released. The'reupon the lever'16 falls which entails an upward swinging movement of the traveler 15, whereupon the axle of the roll 13 ofthe traveler strikes against the lever 25, sothat' the lever 24 swings out against the traveler and, owing to the simultaneous commencement of the movement of the traveler as the] result of the coupling 29 being again thrown into' 1 gear, the sheet, which has been sucked up, is

The operation of the hand lever 26 and the return movement of the same into normal position must necessarily arrest the movement of the delivery device, so that a paste board is conveyed in such a manner that it arrivesat the same time at the rolls 38, 39, as the sheet which by operation of the hand lever 26 has been delivered to the delivering web 15 and then supplied with adhesive substance. A very important advantage of the machine when combined with a sheet laying on device is that paste, board of any size can be worked up with the same machine without waste. The manufacturer is also in a position to carryout quite small orders which previously were not worth the trouble as either special machines were required or important alterations in the machine were necessary. n

It is especially to be noted that the details of the driving arrangements are indicated purely diagrammatically and described in general terms and that the construction may be altered in any desired manner without passing the sphere of protection of the invention. For instance in car rying the invention into practice the reclprocating table is preferably nearly balanced by a Weight which may be mounted upon one end of a. pivoted lever the other end of which en ages with the table or an extension thereof? The weight is or can be so adjusted that the'table with the pile of sheets thereon, always has a tendency to rise. To arrest the upward movement of the table a stop is provided. The stop is adapted to engage either with the to of the pile of paper or with the table itse f in which latter case the height of the stop is constantly regulated and adjusted bv the was arrested by the aforesaid stop a locking device is provided which is adapted to lock the table prior to the raising of said stop and to unlock the table after the return of the stop to normal position. Such a locking device may consist of a pin provided. with a screw thread which is automatically rotated in one direction or the other so that the table may be alternately held by pressure and released. Further .the frame which carries the suction box 10 and the rollersfor the traveling web 15 may be partly balanced by a weight and the frame lowered against the 1nfluence of the weight or vice versa by a cam mounted 'on a shaft arranged transversely with respect to the direction of travel of the web 15. Also the coupling and uncouplin of the roller 12 maybe eflected automat1- cally by utilizing the reciprocating movement of the aforesaid frame, for instance by means of a cam path arranged concentrically with the roller 12, extending parallel to the axis of said roller and adapted without rotating to slide axially while in engagement on the one hand through antifriction devices with the movable spring actuated portion of a coupling and on the other hand with a part which may be provided with rollers and which rotates synchronously with said frame so that said coupling portion is moved against the influence of said spring into gear with the driving or driven member and alternately released. With this'arrangement the roller 12 may be rotatably mounted on a main vacuumpipe supported in the frame of the machine III which case the branch pipe 18 is rotatably mounted about. the main vacuum pipe and the main vacuum pipe is provided with a suitable port or ports affording communication between the main pipe and said branch pipe. In this case the aforesaid cam path may be arrangedon a disk mounted on said main "acuum pipe by means of a feather and feather-way adjacent to said branch and the coiiperating part rotating with the suction box and provided with rollers may be mounted on a sleeve formed on said branch pipe and surrounding the main vacuum pipe. Further the coupling and the continuously rotating gear wheel may be mounted on a sleeve or extension of the roller 12. The center of the roller 12 may be raised so as to be clear of the pile of material on the table 1 when the traveling web 15 is in contact therewith an additional roller being provided between the roller 12 and the suction box 10 to maintain the desired angle of the traveling web 15. Adjustable devices may be provided for regudesired angle of the traveling web 15. Adjustable devices may be provided for regu lating the tension of -the web 15. Adjusting devices for regulating the tension of the other traveling webs belts or the like are preferably introduced whenv required or found desirable.
Instead of providing-chain or belt drives interchangeable gear may be introduced so as to enable the speed of travel of the webs to be varied as required. To facilitate the changing of the gear horizontal cross girders are provided connecting the end standards of the machine and the cross girder is provided preferably with longitudinal channels in which the bearings for the spindles of the gear wheels may be adjustably secured. The
- aforesaid stop and locking devices for the tomatically delivering simultaneously the two sheets to be pasted together both machines may be driven by the same motor and in order to regulate thespeed of one machine relatively to the speed of the other machine a variable speed gear capable of fine adjustment may be introduced between the two machines. Such a variable speed gear mafy be of any well known construction as or instance two slightly oppositely coned pulleys a connecting driving belt and means for varying the portion of the belt or a right-angled drive may be employed with means for varying the position of one member of said drive with respect to the center of rotation of the other member of the drive.
I claim 1. Feeding apparatus for sheets comprising a reciprocating perforated vacuum chamber, means for rarefying the air'in said chamber and a permeable web traveling over the pcrforated'wall of said chamber so that the sheet is held on the web by atmospheric pressure.
2. In a feeding apparatus for a sheet pa ing machine the combination with means for removing the sheets one by one from a pile means for supplying the sheet when removed with an adhesive substance and drawing rolls, of a traveling'device adapted to con vey the sheet by suction when supplied with the adhesive substance to said drawing rolls said device having a lesser speed than the surface speed of said rolls whereby the trailing end of the sheet is yieldingly retarded for the purpose set forth.
3. Feeding apparatus for sheets comprising a permeable traveling web adapted to be reciproc'ated to and from the pile of sheets, means forsubjecting said web to the sheets means for subjecting said web to the artial vacuum, means for.
influence of a reciprocating sa1d web and means dependent upon said reciprocating means for causing said web to travel to deliver the sheets whereby the traveling movement of said web ceases as soon as said web sinks to the supply pile of sheets, so that the removal of the top takes place while said web is at rest.
5. In a feeding apparatus for a sheet pasting machine, the combination with means for removing the sheets one by one from a pile means for supplying the sheet when removed with an adhesive substance and drawing rolls, of a traveling device adapted to convey the sheet when supplied with the adhesive substance to said drawing rolls by suction, means for rarefying the air throng said device at the receiving and delivery ends thereof said device having a lesser speed than that of the surface speed of said rolls whereby the sheet in part 15 yieldingly retarded in opposition to the influence of the drawing rolls and in part is free to deform under the influence of the moisture due to the adhesive substance.

A feeding apparatus for sheets com-- prising an air chamber havin the lower in said chamber, a web permeable to air ada ted to travel in contact with the lower per orated wall of said chamber, means for moving simultaneously said web and said chamber into contact with and away from the pile of sheets to be fed, meansfor causing thelongitudinal-movement of said web and a coupling controlled by the secondnamed means for connecting and disconnecting the last-named means.
A sheet pasting machine comprising a reciprocating table for the sheets to be pasted an air chamber having the lower wall perforated, means for rarefying the air in said chamber a web permeable to air adapted to travel longitudinally in contact "with the lower perforated wall of said chamber,
means whereby the longitudinal movement of said web. is arrested as it falls into contact with the top sheet of the pile, pasting means adapted to receive the sheet as it is delivered by the longitudinal movement of said web, a second traveling web permeable to air means for delivering the sheet when pasted upon said second web, a second air chamber having a perforated wall in contact with said second web means for rarefying the-air in said second chamber, pressure and drawin rolls located at the delivering end of saidsecond web, means for causing longitudinal movement of said second web, means for rotating said rolls at a greater rate of speed than that of the speed of the longitudinal-movement of said second web and means for automatically delivering to said rolls a sheetsynchronously with the delivery of the pasted sheet.

A sheet pasting machine comprising a reciprocating table for the sheets to be pasted, an air chamber havin the lower wall perforated, means for rare ying the air in said chamber, a web permeable to air adapted to travel longitudinally in contact with the lower perforated wall of said chamber, means for movingsimultaneously said web and said chamber into contact with and I away from the pile of sheets on said table, means for raising said table in synchronism with the falling movement of said web, means for moving said web longitudinally, means whereby the longitudinal movement of said web is arrested as it falls into contact with the top-sheet of the pile, pasting means adapted to receive the sheet as it is delivered by the longitudinal movement of said web, a second traveling Web permeable to air, means for deliverin the sheet when pasted upon said second we%, a second chamber having a wall perforated toward each end in contact with said. second web, means for rarefying the air in said second chamber,
ressure and drawing rolls located at the elivering end'of said second web, an endless band surrounding at one end each of said rolls, a receptacle for liquid for each set of bands, a roller located in each receptacle for the other ends of said bands, means for causing longitudinal movement of said second web, means for rotating said rolls at a greater rate of speed than that of the speed of the longitudinal movement of said second web and meansfor automatically delivering to said rolls a sheet synchronously with the delivery of the pasted sheet.
