WEATHER-STRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed June 30, 1910. Serial No. 569,716.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVeather- Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toan improvement in weather strips, and the object is to provide means which will close the space between the sill and the door when the door is closed.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a top plan View; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing the strip raised; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the lever; Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views.
A, represents the sill which is provided with a longitudinal slot through its center, in which is received the weather strip B. The strip 13 is preferably constructed U- shaped and is provided at one end with a slot 1. Stops 2, 2 are formed at both ends of the sill at the bottom thereof for supporting the strip in the sill when the strip is lying flush or on the level with the upper surface of the sill. A lever 3 is pivotally mounted between the sides of the sill about midway of the length of the lever. The forward end of the lever is preferably curved upwardly and is pivotally connected to the strip 13 at or near the center of the strip. The rear end of the lever is provided with a slot 4 in which is held an arm 5, which is adjustably held in the slot by means of a screw 6. The arm projects upwardly through the slot 1 in the strip B and the upper end of the arm is beveled. A wear plate 7 is connected at the bottom and rear angle or corner of the door, which plate is adapted to come in contact with the arm 5 when the door is closed for forcing the arm down; ward into the sill and causing the strip to be raised to close the space between the door and sill. The arm 5 being capable of adjustment, can be so regulated that the strip can be raised to the desired elevation between the door and sill upon the arm being struck by the door.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the simple adjustment of the arm the strip can be raised to the desired elevation above the sill for closing the opening between the sill and door. This provision of a strip between the sill and bottom of a door which can be automatically raised to the desired elevation prevents air and dirt from passing into a room between the door sill and bottom of a door.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without. departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a door sill, having a slot therethrough, of a strip of inverted U shaped form in cross section fitted to the slot, said strip having a slot at one end, a lever pivotally supported and having pivotal connection with the interior of the strip and an arm projecting from one end of the lever into the slot in the strip in position to be engaged by the lower edge of the door in closing to depress the arm and elevate the strip uniformly throughout its length against the lower edge of the door when closed.
2. The combination with the door sill, slotted throughout its length and having inward projecting stops, of a strip fitted to the slot and normally resting upon the stops whereby to bring its upper edge flush with the upper surface of the sill, one end of the strip having'a slot therethrough, a lever pivotally connected with the sill and having pivotal sliding connection with the strip, an arm adjustably connected with one end of the lever in position to project up through the slot in the end of the strip and having an inclined surface adapted to be engaged by the lower edge of the door when closed whereby to depress the arm and cause the strip to be raised into contact with the lower edge of the door throughout the entire length of the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. PENNY.
