WITNESSES.-
6% mdczmw A TTORNE Y OTTO SOHBADER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
POST-CAP AND TIMBER-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1 0, 1908. Serial No. 512,272.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910..
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, O'rro citizen of the United States,
Francisco, in the county of R. SOHRADER, a resldmg at San San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Post-Caps and Timber-Seats, of which the following is a specification. p
The present invention relates to an 1mproved post cap and timber support, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be strong and durable and yet comparatively cheap.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cap in position, the upper timbers being shown in dotted lines; Fi 2 is a plan view of the .blank from whic either section of the cap is formed; Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the section formed from the blank; Fig. 4 is a broken perspective view of a modified *form of the cap, the upper timbers being I omitted.
Referring to the. drawing, 1 indicates a blank, in which is cut a T-shaped slit 2. The blank. is then bent on a parallel therewith to form flanges 5, and the wings 6 formed by the slit and the adjacent edges of the blank are bent back at right angles to the adjacent parts 7-of the blank, so that the section thus formed assumes the appearance shown in Fig. 3. Two of these sections are then placed together so that the wings 6 at each end are in the same plane with each other, and the parts 7 of the blank from which they are bent are in contact with each other, and said wings are then riveted together, as shown at 8. These wings are placed on opposite sides of the top of the lower post 9 and are secured to the post by screws 10. The horizontal timbers 11, and the upper post 12, are placed in the seat formed by the bent flanges 5 of the two sections, and are secured in position by a middle bolt 13, through the upper timber, and outer bolts 14 through the side timbers.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, dowel pins are substituted for the outer bolts 14; also in said modification, between the top of the post 9 and the wings 6, are inserted U-' shaped straps 16, which serve to bind the top of the post and prevent its splitting.
I claim 1. A 0st cap or timber seat comprising parts a apted to rest upon the top of the said portion at its ends post, flanges formed integral therewith and extending upwardly at the edges of said parts to engage sides of the upper timbers, flan es having u per edges, parts formed integral therewit and extending downward midwa depending parts having outward right angled extensions from their inner edges adapted to engage the sides of the top of the post, substantially as described.
2. A post cap, or timber seat consisting of two similar sections each comprising a central seat portion adapted to rest upon the top of the post, an outer flange portion bentat right angles to said seat portion adapted and free at its upper edge to engage sides of the upper timbers, an inner flange portion extending downwardly from said seat only, said inner flange having right angled extensions and said extensions being adapted to engage sides of the top of the post, substantially as described.
3. A-post cap or timber seat comprising a main portion, a part of which is adapted to rest upon the top of the post, flanges below said main portion adapted to rest against the'sides of a post, flanges extending upwardly from said main portion also adapted to rest against the sides of a post,
and having free upper edges, and terminal I'Ibs depending from said maln portion in alinement with, but spaced from, each other to permit the post to pass therebetween, substantially as described.
4. A post cap or timber seat comprising a horizontal seating portion adapted to rest upon, andbe supported by, a vertical post,
upwardly extending flange portions adapted to engage the sides of a post above said seat portion, and having free upper edges, downwardly extending flanged portions adapted to rest against the sides of a post below said seat portion, and central depending ribs. the inner ends of said ribs being spaced from each other to permit a post to pass therebetween, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I OTTO R. SCHRADER.
Witnesses:
FRANCIS M. WRIGHT, D. B. RICHARDS.
