Be it known that I, HARRY' M. MCALAR- NEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Puritan, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsl in Telephone-Receiver Holders, of which the following isa specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying rawlng. 4

This invention relates to telephone receiver holders, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a desk telephone witha novel attachmentfor supporting the receiver thereof in vposition for immediate use and in proximity to a persons ear using the telephone, thus allowing 'free use of the hands tor transcribing a message receivedy over the telephone or for any other pur- 0 poses.

, Another object of the invention is to pro-V vide a novel switch for opening and closing the circuit of the telephone, the switch being located contiguous to the receiver arm, whereby it will be only necessary to open the switch when itis desired to 'use the telephone.

A further object of the invention is to provide a holder of the above type that is 0 simple in construction, durable, lnexpensive to manufacture, and a vconvenience t0 the user of a telephone.

I'V ith the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination. and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. Reference will now be had to the draw ing forming a partof this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall .within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawing: Figure 1v is a side elevation of a telephone equipped with the attachment. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3' is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the telephoneshowinga portion of the attachment in elevation and partly in section, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same.

In the drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the base of a desk telephone having a central pedestal 2 with the upper end thereof provided witha pivoted and adjustable transmitter 3. The pedestal 2 has the ordinary type of receiver holder and switch arm 4,'but instead of sup orting the receiver upon said arm, I provi e the pedl estal 2 with an attachment adapted to support the receiver in proximity to the transmitter 3.

Surrounding the pedestal 2 and preventing the same from beinv injured is a lining 4or sleeve of felt or resilient material 5 and clamped u on said sleeve and to the pedestal 2 is a braclket, comprising two hingedrnembers 6 hinged together, as at 7. These members have rearwardly extending lugs 8 adapted to be connected by a bolt 9 and a nut 1 0. Riveted or otherwise connected to the bracket', as at 11, is an upwardly extendin flat bar 12, which is twisted, as at 13, an

bent forwardly to provide a horizontal support 14. The bar l2 is then bent outwardly, asat 15, upwardly, asat 16, twisted, as at 17, and then bent upwardly at an angle, as

at 18, the angular endiof said bar having a longitudinal slot 19.

,Mounted upon the horizontal support 144 of the bar 12 are two bearings 20, said bear-v ings being attached to the horizontal support by bolts 2l and nuts22. The bearings extend u wardly upon the front and rear sides of t e switch arm 4 and in the upper ends of said bearings is journaled a switch,

The rod 23 between the bearin s 20 is provided with a crank or radially' isposed ug 25 adapted to engage the upper edge of the arm 4 and retain the same 1n a lowered position upon the horizontal .supportl 14, said support limiting the downwardl movement of the switch arm. By simply' rotating the rod 23 the crank or lug 25 can be swung upwardly to release'the switch arm 4 and allow the same to complete a telephonie circuit or connection.

Adjustably connected to the angular portion 18 of the bar 12 by 'a screw 26 and awing thumb nut 27 is a longitudinally slotted arm 28 and ivotally` connected to the upper end of sait? arm by a bolt 29 and a nut 30 is a receiver clamp, comprising two sections 3l hinged together, as at 322 said sections embraclng a receiver 33, which is connected by wires 34 to the base 1 of the telephone.

lt is through the medium of thc adjustable arm 28, the bolt 29 and the nut 30 that the receiver 33 can be correctly positioned relatively to the transmitter 3, Whereby a person need only place his head in position to talk into the transmitterand the receiver will be in proper position to permit of the ear being placed against the same support to receive a 'message over the telephone.

lnasmuch as the attachment does not alter or change the present type ofv desk'telephone, it is obvious that it can be easily applied to a telephone at the convenience of the subscriber, Without interfering with company, rights or privileges or Without injuring the pedestal of the telephone.- It is preferableto -inish the attachment Whereby it will harmonize with the nickel plated nish 'of the `telephone.
