To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. BIssnLL, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Electrical Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to, electrical coulings,and the object thereof is to provide a durable, simple and highly eilicient device for connecting two conductors to each other, or one conductor to a suitable support.
The invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter de scribed and particularly" pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one exemplification of .my invenof the projections are tion:Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away and in section, of this coupling, and two conductors connected thereby. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, of said parts. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the detached coupling, one of the sections of the band member bein shown as disengaged from the nut and swung upwardly. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of themembers of the coupling.
This-coupling comprises generally a sectional bandor strap member, a main member having means coact'ing with the band or strap member for clamping a conductor passing through the bore of the band or strap member, said main member also having means for engagin a second conductor or support, and a nut or coacting with the two members.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the band or strap member comprises two segmental sections 1 and 2 pivotally connected at correspondin ends to each other, as at- 3, and provide at their free ends with op osing laterally extending externally threa ed rojections 4 and 5. The projections 4 and 5 form in effect a sleeve extending laterally from the bore of the band member, and conti ous portions provi ed with complemental recesses forming slotsfiextending laterally from the bore of said sleeve.
The main member of the cou ling is provided at one end with a head 2 having an arcuate face 8 for engaging a conductor 9, is provided at its opposite end 10 with means for engaging a second conductor or support 11, an is provided intermediate of the head '4 and the end 10 with a shank l2 hereinafter particularly described.
In the present exemplification of my invention the means associated with the end 10 of the main member for engaging a second conductor or support 11 comprises a com pressible'sleeve 13 having a tapering periphery complemental to a socket or bore in the end 10, and a nut 14 formed with a threaded bore engaging external threads on the end 10, and with a shoulder 15 engaging the end of the sleeve 13 for forcing the latter into the socket and thereby contracting the sleeve 13 about the end of the conductor or support 11.
The head 7 is designed to operate between the sections 1 and 2 of the band member or within the bore of said band member, and is disposed with its greater length parallel to the axis of such bore, and the face 8 thereof is designed to cooperate with the inner surfaces of the sections 1 and 2 so that the conductor 9 will be firmly engaged substantially at all points about the part of its periphery located between said sections 1 and 2.
The nut 16 associated with the band and main. members of the coupling serves to hold these parts in clamping position and to secure one of the sections of the band member against separation from the main member of the couplin while permitting the movement of the ot er section of the band member about the pivot 3 to admit the conductor 9 within the bore of the band member, and said nut when properly adjusted admits of the band member being entirely separated from the main member. In the accompanying drawing this nut 16 engages the external threads on the end 10, and the threads of the projections 4 and 5 and its upper ed e coacts with shoulders 17 which are rovi ed on the head 7 and project lateral y through the slots 6 and eyond the sleeve formed by the projections 4 and 5. Consequently, as the nut 16 is screwed toward the head 7 the face 8 and the inner surfaces of the sectionsl and 2 of the band member are forced into firm contact with the conductor 9 passing through the bore of sald band. member.
The inner faces of the projections 4 and 5 and the coacting surfaces of the shank 12 are preferably so constructed that a nut of uniform bore may be employed for engaging both the end 10 of the main memberand one or both of the projections 4 and 5 when the latter are in-contact with the shank 12. To this end a part of the shank 12 is made of reduced size, and "the inner faces of the projections 4 and 5 are shaped to conform to the contiguous surface of said reduced part. In the exemplification of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing, the reduced portion of the shank 12 is formed by making a part of the shank of less diameter than the nut 10 and substantially cylindrical in form, and the projections 4 and 5 are substantially semi-circular in cross section and their inner faces closely fit the surfaces of the shank with which they come in contact. Consequently the reduced portion of the shank 12 extends through and fits the bore of the sleeve formed by -the projections 4 and 5.
In order that one of the sections of the band member may be swung upwardly-on its pivot 3 while the remaining section is coupled by the nut 16 to the main member of the coupling, the projections 4 and 5 are of unequal length, the projection 5 being longer than the projection 4, and remaining in engagement with the nut 16 after the same has been turned from the head 7 suf-" ficiently'to disengage the projection 4'from said nut. By additionally turning 16 in the same direction the projection 5 will be disengaged from said nut and the band member may then be wholly disconnected from the main member of the coupling. In the preferable construction of this coupling lengthwise edges or. surfaces of the projections 4 and 5 between the recesses forming the slots 6 and the endsof sai'd projections are engaged with each other to revent movement or springing of said pro ections relatively to each other especially when the nut 16 is turned. Moreover, to prevent twisting on ,the shank 12 of the sleeve formed by the projections 4 and 5, one side of said sha'nk beneath theprojection 4 is unreduced in diameter and is provided with lengthwise shoulders 18 which are engaged by t h e o osing surfaces of the projection 5;

In an electrical coupling, a band member comprising two sections pivotally connected to each otherat correspondin ends and provided at their oppositeends with opposing externally threaded projections, a main member having a shank provided with an engaging face at one end for coiiperating with the band member, the shank being provided with additional en aging means, and said projections being s ape to embrace a portion of the shank, and a nut for engaging the externally threaded projections and the shank to effect relative movement of the and provided at their opposite ends with opposing externally threaded projections, a main member having a shank provided with an engaging face at one end for cooperating with the band member, the shank being, provided with a threaded portion, and said projections being shaped to embrace a portion of the shank, and a hut for engaging the externally 'threaded projections and the shank to effect relative movement of the band and main members, said nut cooperating with one of the externally threaded projections and the threaded portion of the shank for uniting said projection and shank, gulstantially as and for the purpose speci- 11. In an electrical coupling, a band member comprising. two sections pivotally connected to each other at corresponding ends and provided at their opposite ends with opposing externally threaded projections substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section which in effect form a sleeve when the band member is in clamping position, contiguous portions of the projections being provided with complemental recesses forming op posite slots opening laterally from the bore of the sleeve, and said projections having opposing lengthwise surfaces normally engagmg each other, a main member having a shank provided with a head at one end lo- Y ing with one of the externally threaded pro jections and the threaded portion of the shank for uniting said projection and shank,
