PORTABLE FORGE-DRILL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. WILSON, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Force-Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, which illustrate the preferred :orm of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited, except as required by the scope of the claims, to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawingsz. Figure l is an elevational view of my improved force drill; Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view thereof on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
The object of the invention is to produce a light, compact, and easily portable force drill which comprises but few parts and which may be secured in position for operation by means of a flexible member carried thereby, which is adjustable to regulate the relative position of the drill and the material to be operated upon.
Referring to the parts, 1 is a twist drill which may be of any desired form or size. 2 is a chuck or socket in which said drill l is seated.
3 is a stem carrying the chuck 2, which stem is provided with a non-circular end portion 4 adapted to be seated in the chuck end of a brace or other suitable rotating implement 5 shown in fragment in Fig. 1.
The stem 3 is rotatably mounted in the sleeve 6 which is hollow as shown in the sectional view, Fig. 2, and is provided with an external screw thread 7 upon which is rotatably mounted the strap clamp 8. This strap clamp is best shown in Fig. 3 and comprises the central bearing portion 8 ada ted to travel on the screw thread 7 with integral lugs 9 extending laterally therefrom, while forwardly of the lugs 9 are angular frame members 10 through which the strap 11 may be passed with the Specification of Letters Patent.

A indicates a block or other material in which a perforation is to be made by means of the drill 1 and it is to be observed that the strap 11 is passed through the openings 13 in the frame members 10 thence rearwardly toward the operating tool and the perforations 12 of the strap passed inwardly upon the lugs 9 to secure the strap in position, after which rotation of the tool causes corresponding rotation of the drill l and carries it into the material operated upon.
\Vhere slow drilling is required, the sleeve (3 is not secured upon the stem 3. If a more rapid drilling is required the set screw 14 is locked in position so as to secure said sleeve (3 upon the stem 3, whereupon rotation of the stem 3 will cause corresponding rotation of the sleeve 6 and advance, by means of the screw thread in the member 8, said stem and sleeve and the drill.
For convenience of setting the parts to position before the commencement of drill operations, the sleeve 6 is provided with a plurality of laterally extending and rounded studs 15 which may be grasped so as to rotate said sleeve by hand and advance the drill toward the material to be operated upon.
It will be observed that the lugs 9 extend outwardly beyond the opening 13 in the frame 10 so that the strap is always under tension while the operation of drilling is going on, consequently there is no probability of accidental release of the parts.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a portable force drill, the combination of a rotatable sleeve threaded externally, a rotatable socketcd stem in said sleeve, means for locking the sleeve and stem together, and means engaging the threads of the sleeve and means for connecting said last named means with the article to be operated upon for producing relative approaching adjustment of the sleeve and article.
