STIFFENING-SKELETON FOB. BALLON-COVERINGS.
Specication of Lettera Patent.
Application tiled August 14, 1909. 4 Serial Re. 512,790.
To all wlwm 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM Rm'rrc, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing in Berlin, German Empire, have invented new and useful provements in Stiil'ening- Skeletons for alloonCoverings, of which the following is a s ification.
reltces to a rigid .balloon covering which y offers great resistance to interior and exterior strain,v is suiiciently resilient to prevent breakage on striking solid bodies, an`d does neither generate nor conduct electricity. The `coverin is 1ntended to be applied to the 'outer rlgid shell which incloses a number of gas bags and which is not changed in Ishape by a change of volume of said In the aecompanyln drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation o a balloon provided with my im roved covering; Fi 2 1s a cross section on hne A-B, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detail o f the joint, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal sec-4 ion ghrough one of the rods, on line .C-D,
lThe skeleton is composed essentially of a seriesof wooden rods which are so arranged and connected that the form a continuous reticulated convex b y with intervening triangular meshes. The rods are made partl hollow, as at m,-each rod being comof a suitable number of lengths havmg beveled ends n, which are glued togiether.` At their joints and at their ints of intersection the rods are made so d, as
shown, so that increased strength at these Patented Nov. 1, 1910. l
points is insured. With the shape of balloon represented in the drawing, the skeleton comprises a first series of curved longitudina rods and two -additlonal series of curved transverse spiral rods extending in .opposite directions. In this way three rods meet at each point of interstion, while triangular open spaces or meshes are formed between the rods. In order to increase the durability at the joints, the two transverse vseries of rods as well as the longitudinal rods are here provided with shoes or o, that flank the superposed rods, while a bolt s, car a nut t, passes centrally through eac, 'omt. v
A balloon s eleton made accordin to my invention possesses great strength an lightness, does not expand or eontractunder atmospheric inuences, `ma be constructed at comparatively low cost y unskilledlabor, and is of great simplicity. 1
I claim: c
A balloon skeleton comprisin a number of wooden rods 'that cross eac form intervening triangular meshes, ad shoes at lhe joints oid somce1S of said rods that e ge t e superpos ro la .witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two` witnesses.
. WILHELM RETTIG.
