Be it known that I, lVALTnR WINs'rAN-. LEY PEoK, a British subject, residing at Manchester, county of Lancaster, England. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coke-Ovens, of which the follow This invention relates to by-product coke and is designe to provide for a better distribution of the gas and heating of the air for combustion purposes.
In carrying out the invention the fines for are built as a single flue or passage beneath the ovens divided by thin partitions such as tiles, the combustion chamber and the air distributing chamber are built as a single flue or passage divided by tiles with air passages at the sides or edges the gas conduit is formed of perforated pipes supported in the combustion chamber and air heating passages are formed in the crown of the oven.

In a horizontal oven (as in Figs. -1 to 5) the bottom of the combustion chamber C is formed with a-number of tiles 0 placed on ledges c with an air passage 0 in the sides of or between every pair or tiles. The tiles c form a partition or division wall between the combustion chamber C and the air delivery flue E beneath it. The earthenware pipes forming the conduit D are D sha ed in cross-section and are placed upon the tiles 0 or the pipes may be formed with. ledges at either side to rest upon the projecting bricks c.
In an inclined oven (as in Figs. 6 to 10.) the bottom of the combustion chamber is formed by the gas conduit D the pi es forming which are provided with side flanges (2 (Figs. 9 and 10.) which rest at intervals upon projecting bricks c in the side of the chamber. The air delivery chamber E is'also constructed of large area in proportion to the air passages or outlets c to equalize the pressure of the air escaping through the latter. The air assages c in the top of the'air delivery c amber E deliver the heated air at the sides ofthe gas conduit D in the bottomof the combastion chamber C. If desired air may also I purpose of heating the air supply and of keeping the crowns of the ovens cool. The oven crowns are built-of tiles or bricks G with the-fines or passages F through them. The fines under the retorts A are built as one flue or cavity and are divided into four separate fines or passages by means of tiles or thin partitions m) in forming a hot products flue L immediately below the retort base for the heated products of combustion; an air flue M through which the heated air flows in an opposite direction; a second flue L for hot products leading to the chimney flue R and a second air flue M the two latter being divided by the thin vertical partitions m. The air Hues F in the crowns of the ovens connect by an external pipe N with the air fines M alongside the flue L.
The air flue M. at one end connects with the air flue M situated between the hot ')roducts flues L and L beneath the floor of the retort A; and the air fine BI connects with 'ivitheut reversing the current by causing the air to How in close contact with the hot products fines and in a direction contrary products and flues M M for air substantially as described.
