ythe numeral 10 designates an internal comcrank shaft 11 and upon which is secured a ratchet sleeve 12. The drum 15 ,is provided with disks 19 and 20, the disk end of the drum 15, and through the me-l dium of which threads, the disk 19 is re- .tained within the drum 15 and'against the outer disk 16. The operating shaft 26 is 'extended through a, late 27 which is clamped -to a frame 28 w ich supports the internal combustion engine 10, and the plate 27 `forms a bearing for supporting thev outer end of the shaft 26." Forwardly extended 'from the plate 27, and preferably integrally formed therewith, as is disclosed in the drawings, is a cylinder 29, the same being engaged about the neck`24 to permit of the free rotation of the neck 24 therein. A collar 30 is carried loosely upon the operating shaft 26 adjacent the neck 2.4, andis provided at diametrically opposite points with keys or beads 31 for engagement in grooves 32 formed longitudinally in the forward endof the cylinder 29 4to permit of the longitudinal sliding of the collar 30 and tovlock` the same fr om rotative movement relative to the cylinder 29. y i, f
The collar 30 is provided with a' plurality of ratchet'teeth in itsfforward face which eo-act with a like, plurality of ratchet teeth which are formed upon the-rear end of the neck 24 for the purpose of locking the neck 24 upon thel backward rotation of the same by engagement with the collar 30. The operating shaft 26 carries an abutment 33 which is in the form of a disk and which is keyed to the shaft 26 through the medium of a pin 34 which is extended diametrically`I through the abutment 33 and the shaft 26.- A helical spring 35 is disposed about the shaft 26 between the collar 30 and the abut.- I ment 33 for the purposeof frictiona'lly, holding the collar 30 .against theinner end of the neck 24 to insure the engagement ofthe teeth of the two members upon the reverse motion of the neck 24. In the usual manner a spring 36 is employed which is positioned between the frame 23a-nd the head 37 of a crank arm 38, the head 37 i being Secured to the outer extremity of the 'operating shaft 26. The'spring- 36 is-'provided for the-purpose of. normally retracting the cranking device to 'holdtheratehet sleeves 12 and out of engagement with one another. In the'operation ofthe improved devlce when it is desired to start the gas engine the .crank arm 38 is grasped inthe hand and rotatedin the direction in which the engine is to be run, which is generally in a rotation to the right. When the arm 38 is rotated' the shaft 26 iscarried therewith, which imparts a rotation to the drum 15'. As the drum 15 is rotated the disks 19 and 2O are carried therewith [and by their frict'ional engagecaused `to carry the ,ratchet sleeve 13 therewith. During' the rotation of the crank arm 38 the same is forcedinwardly to earrythe .operating shaft 26 longitudinally through the plate 27, whereby the.ratehet sleeve113 isaabutted with the ratchetsleeve 12k-,and is therebyconneeted to the crank shaft 11 of' the engine. Should the engine tend to back iire or a premature explosion occur, and the crank shaft be given an -impulse in the re` Versedirection, the ratchet lsleeves l2 and 13 will be 'carried withthe crank shaft l11 and rotate the disks 16 together with the stub shaft-14, whereby the drum 15 is given a slight reverse movement. Simultaneously with this operation the teeth-upon the neck 24 lock with the teeth formed upbn the collar 30'and tend to rotate the collar 30. The
collar 3() however, is locked from rotation by the provision of the keys 31 which are engaged` in the grooves 32, whereby the neck 24 is prevented from further rotation and the druinl is held rigidlytogether with the disks19 and 20. Should the force of the explosion be of suflieient strengthA the" disks 16which are carried'by the stub shaft 14, will slide between the disks19 ,a-n'd 2O andwill by their friction bring/ the crank -shaft 11 to a standstill upon the expenditure of the impulse which is imparted to the same by the premature explosion.4 'As ythe operating shaft 26. is carried by the neck 24, which is locked .from backward rota-4 tion', the shaft 26 is/held in an inactiveposiioo tion and consequently the handle 38 is prethe neck 24 when the operating shaftf26 is.
