WINDOW-VENTILATOR AND SHADE-GUARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL H. NEFFLEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Elkins, in the county of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Ventilators and Shade-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ventilators, and

" pertains especially to the class of window ventilators having a wind guard or deflector, or draft shield.

The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable, foldable or collapsible ventilator adaptable for windows of various size, and attachable to the window-sill so as to be swung into and out of position without detaching it from the window-sill.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a window ventilator, means for adjustably hinging the front of the ventilator to the window-sill, means for adjustably hinging the ends of the ventilator to the said front, and a wind-guard of special construction and purpose swingable from the top edge of such front, and adjustable relative thereto.

A still further object of the invention is` to provide special hangers for connecting the ventilator to window-sills; a special shadeguard; special means for adjusting the shade guard lengthwise and laterally; and novel and peculiar adjustable hinge connections between `the end wings of the ventilator and the body or front thereof.

Various other objects, advantages and improved results which have been found desirable and preferable in this class of ventilators, are attainable in the practical application and working of this ventilator, as will be hereinafter fully described and set up in the claims to follow.

The same reference numerals denote the' same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

The end wings 1, are adjustably hinged to the body or front 2 of the ventilator, by means of hinges 3, having a tongue 4, provided with a slot 5, for suitable screws, and the said wings have hooks 6 for connecting them to the window frame or casing. The bottom edge of the front 2 has a weather strip 7, and a pair of notches 8, each of which are faced on the inner side of the front by a plate 9 having a slot 10, central of the notches, or the slots may be made in said front in lieu of the slotted plates.

The ventilator is pivot-ally hung from the window-sill 11, by means of a pair of hangers 12, which are of such thickness and width as to be inserted through the plateslots 10, so as to permit the plates 9 to slide over them in the swinging movement of the ventilator. Both of these hangers being of the same construction, only one of them will be described in detail; it has a bowed or semi-circular portion 13, which spans the edge or projecting ledge of the window-sill, a stem 14, depending from the bowed portion for securing the hanger to the inner face of the sill, or wall below the sill, a right-angle en d 15 secured to the face of the window sill, and a stop-lug or shoulder 16, adjacent the said end for engaging the upper edge of the slots 10, so as to prevent the ventilator from accidental swinging. It is obvious that when the ventilator is to be swung for dropping it, the front is lifted suiciently to disengage the said slot edge with the said shoulder, whereupon the ven-v tilator will follow over the bowed portion of the hangers in raising or lowering it. The said shoulder orV stop-lug also prevents the ventilator from slipping or dropping back out of proper position. The bow or curvature of the hangers are such as to permit them to be attached to sills of various size or thickness, and they are specially applicable in hanging one ventilator to a pair of adjacent windows.

The shade-guard comprises two sections- 17 which telescope a central connecting sec end provided with a loop 20, for holding the outer end of the sections 17; and the other end of the bars is adjustable in a sleeve Q1, hinged at 22, to the top edge of the front 2. The guard rests against the window directly under the shade 23, so as to deflect the current of air therefrom and prevent the swinging or rattling of the shade; and the front 2 is provided with supports 24, which engage the bars 19, for the purpose of limiting the fall or drop of the guard.

It will be seen that t-he end wings are adjustable lengthwise the front to have them enter windows of various size; that the guard is adjustable lengthwise; that the bars are adjustable at right angles to the front 2, for the purpose of adjusting the guard laterally7 to suit windows of various depths; that the several parts may be expeditiously folded and unfolded either in attached or detached condition of the ventilator; that the top of the ventilator is open for the purpose of allowing free access of air to a room; and that the guard, while protecting the shade, does not interfere with the passage of air, but detlects the air at this point into the room.

It is obvious that the size, shape and material of the various parts may be changed, and that the front 2, may be provided in whole or in part with glass as desired.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination, with a window' ventilator having closed ends and a closed front, of a shade-guard comprising telescopic sections, bars having looped ends for certain of said sections, sleeves hinged to the said front and having the other end of the bars adjustable therein; and means for swinging the front above and below the window sill.

2. The combination, with a window ventilator having closed ends and a closed front', of means for hanging the ventilator from a window sill, comprising a pair of hangers secured to the sill and having a bowed portion adapted to fit over the edge of the sill, said bowed portion permitting the said front to be swung thereon above and below the sill.

3. The combination, with a window ventilator having closed ends and a closed front, of means for hanging th-e ventilator from a window-sill, comprising a pair of hangers secured to the sill and having a bowed portion adapted to ft over the edge of the sill, said bowed portion permitting the said front to be swung thereon above and below the sill, and a shoulder or stop-lug on the hangers to prevent back Yard movement of the front during set position of the ventilator.

tilator, a closed front, end wings, and a shade-guard adjustable lengthwise and laterally, of hinges having a slotted tongue for adjustably connecting the wings to the front, adjusting bars having a looped end in which the guard is adjusted lengthwise, sleeves pivoted to the front and in which the bars work for adjusting the guard laterally, and means for hanging the ventilator to the sill so as to permit it. to be swung above and below the sill.

5. In a window ventilator, the combination, with a closed ventilator front, having slots adjacent its bottom edge, of hangers working through the slots and secured to the window-sill and having a bowed portion spanning the edge of the sill, and a stop shoulder on the hangers adapted to engage the edge of the slots for controlling the movement of the said front.
