METHOD OF LAYING CONDUITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Oct. .25, 1910.
Original application filed April 20, 1909, Serial a... 491,158. Divided and this application filed December 17,
. 1909. Serial No. 533,715. I,
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be .it known that we, CARL CAHN' andv nary methods in use, more especially in laying conduits for drainage purposes, for gas and water supply, cable conduits, and the like, it has been a great drawback that for those purposes it has been necessary to open the ground to a greater or less extent.
Especially in laying and connecting branch conduits and at least at the junction of the branch conduit with the main conduit, it
has been necessary to open the ground in order to bring the branch pipe main conduit and makethe oint between the two conduits.
The present pose.
The improved method is illustrated 1n the adcompanying drawin s. Figure 1 is a vertlca lon itudinal section showing the ap aratus for aying-and con necting a branc conduit to a main conduit.
Fig. 2 illustrates themanner of making-the joint at the junction of two conduits. 3. illustrates on a larger scale the arrangement of theretractable boring tool in the foremost tube'section.
,a, is the borin machine located in the basement ofthe ouse which is'to be con nected by means of a conduit tube 0 to the 1 .main conduit h; it is niounted on two supportinfipillars 1', so that it can be set at any I direction of borin desire eight and adjusted for any desired The supporting illars serve for the ing' of the machine etween 'the basement floor and 'the ceiling. The machine is driven-by hand or by power in any suitable manner.;
b, is a tubular boring rod which serves to transmit rota motion from the machine to the boring too f. While boring the boring boring tool 6, and the boring rod b. The
up to the provements have .now for object to reme y this drawback by'enabling" such conduits to be laid wholl underground, and alsoenabling a branc conduit to be connected to an existing conduit without having to open the ground for this pur "means it is possible to withdraw the boring I In the drawin the borin tool" f is shown can e'withdrawn and changed at any time,
and' the outside of the tube being laid'is rem ve y -'in the tool. g
tool f, carries the conduit tube 0 forward with it but without communicating rotary motion to said tube. This is efiected'by the arrangement of a ball bearing between the 60 casingn of e ball bearin is provided with projections or do d'whic bear against the collar 9 of the tu e shoe g, as the borin rod .6 advances, and through the medium 0 this tube shoe-car the tube section 0 that is screwed to it a ong with them.
The machine is provided with a means for guiding the boring tool and the tube.
, The soil dug away by the boring tool. I is conveyed away by a water jet, worm, conveyer, compressed air, or other means. The water flows through the boring rod b to the K boring tool f and returns through the tube 0 being laid. Holes to suit ,the'natureof the ground are provided in a suitable manner in the boring tool' f for the 'exit of the water (Fig. 3) this facilitates considerably the wor of boring through, the ground.
'Whenthe length of the conduit tubin required to meet the main conduit k has een completed by screwing or bolting to ther the necessary separate tube sections t at 'is to say, when the boring tool f has reached thewall of the main conduit h the tool'is withdrawn; j .85
Any suitable boring tool, such as an en: larginsagl drill, undercutting drill, etc.,. may be 31 A boring togol 'may also be used which-is smaller in diameter than the inside diameter" of the tube to be laid. By this tool-from the work at any time for the purpose ofchanging it for the new tool'when reqmred;
as a pointed drr 1' from ho es in which the flushing water issues in jets durin the boring process for the purpose of wi ening the bore hole to the diameter of the tube shoe.
B reason of the fact that the boring tool it is epossible to use at all times a boring tool suit to the soil to be excavated, whether it be a flushing, enlargin "undercutting. or diamond crown drill, or t e like. The small thickness of the soil between the boring-tool the water issuing from the 'holes' A. joint is made when in the fol- 4 .cesspools' or manholes. In laym junction 0 duit h.
lowing manner :-An outer tube 8 .of sufiiciently large diameter to accommodate. the tube 0 is first carried up to the main conduit h in the manner abovedescribed. Then the boring tool em loyed for insertin the outer itube s is with rawn, and a'"si'iita le conical ';drill is inserted and by its means a conical gihole is drilled through the Wall .of the main .conduitfih; This conical drill" is then withdrawnf- 'Thenthe foremost section of the tube 0' to bejoined to the main conduit, having been formed with a conical front. end on which a jointing material 6 such as red lead, has been placed, is inserted in the outer tube sand pushed forward until the said front end has entered theconical hole previously formed in the wall of the main conduit h by the conical drill. The engagement of the conical front end of the inner tube 0 in the said conical hole, forms with the aid of the jointin material e, a tight joint at the the tubes 0 with the main con- Ip lay' drains and the like the machine is located in the pits which are to be used subsequently, for constructing the various cable conduits the working pit will serve orbuilding the inspection boxes. Existing cable boxes may be utilized for working the machine therefrom.
Having now describedand ascertained our said invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The improved method of laying a branch conduit underground to join a main conduit.
without opening the ground for the purpose,
which consists in boring a passage through the ground for the branch conduit tube, carrying an outer conduit tube along with-the boring tool, boring an/approximately conical hole through the wall of the main conduit, applying jointing material to the'conical front end of an inner conduit tube, and inserting said inner conduit tube through said outer conduit tube until the conical front end of the inner conduit tube, provided with jointing material, has entered and become jointed 1n the conical hole in the wall of the main conduit, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
