DEVICE FOR TOOL-HOLDERS IN CUTTING-ENGINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUs'rE PHILIBERT, manufacturer, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Tool-Holders in Cutting-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new head for cutting engines per iitting the toolholder to take any positio desired. This head which utilizes the ordinary frame of cutting engines is principally characterized by a cylindrical casing or shell which sliding and turning within the upper part of the frame, holds-at its free extremity a movable piece, the arrangement being such as to cause the axial line of all movements to pass through the center of said shell.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is shown by way of example.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in like manner as Fig. 1. F1 .3 is a transverse section through the axis 0 the tool-holder. Fig. 4 shows the new device applied to a cutting engine.
The casing or shell a has the shape of a cylinder in order to be able to slide and turn within a circular hole provided at the upper artof the machine frame. This cylinder (1 1s hollow and is partly traversed, in the direction of its axls, by the driving shaft 5. This driving shaft does not move, but the cylinder revolves around it and takes, in case of a horizontal movement, a tooth wheel a with it pivotally mounted in the rear of the cylinder and sliding on the driving shaft by means of a suitable key and spline arrangement. The pinion '0 gears with an other one d rigidly keyed on the auxiliary shaft e revolubly mounted within the cylinder a. Shaft e carries at its other end a bevel tooth wheel f meshing with the external set of teeth 9 of a bevel tooth wheel provided with two sets of teeth.
The tool-holder h is fixed within a turnable piece '5 held by the two branches of the cylinder a. The inner planes of the cylinder branches as well as the corresponding surfaces of the movable piece 2' are thoroughly plane. In order to secure a perfect circular movement of piece 2', the latter is provided with two circular grooves 7' into which are placed the heads of screw-bolts 70 so that piece 71 can turn around its axis. Upon the tool-holder z is keyed a pinion Z which gears with the second set m of teeth of the wheel provided with two sets of teeth and mounted on a short spindle 0.
From the preceding explanation and the drawing it can easily be seen that the toolholder receives always its rotative motion, be it in a position near the frame or distanced therefrom, and in any position with regard to the vertical plane passing through the axis of the cylinder, whereby the movable piece may assume any inclined position.
I claim Improved device for tool-holders in cutting machines comprising in combination a cylindrical casing or shell ending into two branches and revolubly mounted on the driving shaft, a tooth wheel fixed in the rear wall of said casing and sliding on the driving shaft, an auxiliary spindle fixedwithin said casing and adapted to be rotated by means of the tooth wheel, a movable piece between the said branches of the casing, a tool-holder provided with a bevel pinion and adapted to rotate within said movable piece, a bevel pinion with two sets of teeth the internal one of which is destined to gear with the bevel tooth wheel fixed on said toolholder, while the external set of teeth meshes with a bevel pinion fixed on said auxiliary shaft, substantially as described and set forth.
