INSTANTANEOUS WATER-HEATEBi Specication of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed Oct. 2 5, 1910.
T o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it linown th-at I, RnrNoLDs C. Fiuiiiirrois, a citizen of the United States, residing vat Allegheny', in the county lof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Instantaneous later-Heil' Ts, of which the following is a'speeification.
-V The invention relates to water" heaters employing coil tubes, and has for itsprimary ob]e cts; the provision of an improved` a'rrangement of tubes wherebya more coniplete combustion of fuel is secured, and the absorption ofheat from the top to tliebottoni' of the heater rendered more uniform, to
the end that av higher efficiency be attained;
the provision of improved 'means whereby that part of the boiler subject 4'to thev most severe-usage .may be easily replaced; andthe provision of improved means for maintaining a constant circulation of'hot water through the pipes supplied from'the boiler.
Certain embodiments of the invention are:
in the accompanying drawings,
illustrated wherein .Figure 1 is a 'transverse sectionthrough i tliecasing of one type of'heater, the heating coil or boiler being shown in side elevav tion.
Figure 2 isa similar section 'through a somewhat different type of heater, and
Figure 3 is a detail 'plan view .of the -cou- I plin vused inl device of Figurel.
T ie forni of boiler illustrated in Figure 1 is of the type shown in ReineckevXo. Sftlt',
Referring.
issued' September 2l, 190?, 'briefly to thegeneral construction -asshown in this figure, l is the casing of the heater,"l greater proportion ofthe work ofheating 2, 3 and ei are the coil formations constituting the boiler, 5 is the inlet pipe, .(5 is the outlet pipe, 7 is the thermostat, 8 is the pip`e\ leading from the lower portion of the boiler to the thermostat, t) is a connection .between the thermostat` and thepipe 5, which' connection is provided with a cli-eck valve, 1()` aril `thc burners, 11. is a detachable coupling or connection between the coils@ and 4. 12 is a return pipe troni the pipes supplied circulation pipe the usual 'out-let faucetsaie applied, one only of which', 1.2", is shown, and 13 is' a check 'alve for preveiiting'a backward flow of water tothe right in the Athe tee at the lower end of the connection l1. This general arrangement is partially shown in. Patent No. 866,966, and the present invention consists particularly in Athe arrangement of the coils constituting the formations 2, 3 and t', and the use of the parts l1 and l2. The novelty of the coil con-v struction consists in thei'varying of the spaeing 4between the coils in different 'parts-of the length of the-boiler. It .will be noted that the spaces between the coils of the formation i are greater than those between the coils of the formation i9),l and these spaces between the coils ofthe formation 3 lare in turn greater than those between the' coils of4 the` formation 2. The objects .achieved by this arrangement area more complete combustion-of the fuel employed, vand this. at a .positionlower in the casing 'than has heretofore been'the case, and fur-- ther, a more uniform' distribution of the work of heating the water in the boiler.` 'It will be seen'that the arrangement provides for smaller body of water at'the lower portion of the boiler, which condition reL -sults in a smaller reduction in the heatof the flame than has heretofore-been the case, so that the combustion is more complete. Frointhis it follows', that the coinplete'combastion of the gases occursi atV a .point lower than that-'in boilers'` in which the spacing of the coils was uniform from 'top ,to bottom. It willwalso` beNseen that the upper formations 2.and 3 because of their greater.
heating surface than the coil 4', perform a the wateiwthan has' been the case, with the oldV type. of boilers wherein the lower coil ,performed a very large percentage of the "work of the boiler. This latter result is forinity .of absorption of heat Vthroughout 'iiig that the arrangement secures a uni- .I
the boiler because 'ofthe greater heating surface at the upper portions' o f the boiler,
the longer distance through which Lthe water 1.10.
