ENGRAVERS BLOCK.
To all whomtt may concern:
Be it known thaty I, JAMES A. BOWERS,
a citizen of the United States, residing aty Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engravers Blocks, of which'the following is a specification, reference being had thereinl to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to an engravers block or work-holding clamp, and more particularly to that class which are known as a combined key and keyless block, or in other words, a block in which `the workholding Ajaws may be operated together' by a revolvn ing ring suitably geared thereto, or in which either of the jaws may be operated independently by the use of a key.
The objects of the invention are to produce a block of this improved construction, that will be simple in operation, and which may be combined in s-everal different ways to produce a tilting block, as used with the usual pad, or the base of the block may be reversed to lproduce a stationary base, and

Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter j be fully described and claimed in the anj rangement ot the several parts within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings -Figure 1, is a vertical sectional view of my improved block as assembled in a keyless manner and with the base arranged for tilting on a pad; said sectional view taken on the line X-,X of Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the complete block as assembled in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the keyless operating ring, showing the crown bevel gear. Fig. 3a, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. il, is an enlarged detail of one of the jaws and operatingmechanism, taken from Fig. 1.

Fig. G, is a vertical sectional view of the block as arranged for use with the key and assembled in a stationary manner upon the base. Fig. 7, 1s an inverted plan view of the ring, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 7, is a side elevation of the same, partly cut away to show a j section. Fig. 8, is a detail sectional view of the jaws and a part of the head, taken on the line Y-Y of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1, indica-tes the usual Shaped base, which is provided with an axial hole 2, countersunk and screwthreaded at either end 3, and provided upon its flat face with the steady-pin hole 4.
The head comprises the circular member 5, which is formed with the cross slot 6, and the depending bearing sleeve 7. The upper end of said sleeve 7, has secured therein, by the screw 8, the bearing blo-ck 9, which is formed with an axial hole 10, through the body thereof and which is tapered outward upon the lower face to-form a thrust bearing for the beveled end 11, of the hollow spindle 12; said spindle being pro-vided, near its lower end, with the collar 13, and the threaded end 14, which is adapted to be screwed into either of the threaded ends 3, of the axial hole 2, inthe base 1, thus allowing either the spherical or flat portions ot' said base 1, to be placed downward.
Upon the sleeve 7, is placed the collar member 15, which is held in place thereon and from revolving by the set screw 16, the point otl which engages a groove 17, in the outer surface of the sleeve 7.
Upon the head member 5, is secured the circular iianged cap 18, which is cut away through the center to correspond and register with the slot 6, in the head 5; said cap being secured upon the head 5, by the plates 19, which have their adjacent edges extending slightly over the sides of Said slot 6, and secured to the head 5, by the screws 20.
Within the flange of the cap 18, and at opposite sides thereotl and adjacent tothe ends of the slot 6, are journaled the outer ends of the hollow screws 21, which have rigidly secured thereon and within, and bearing against `the inner Surface of said flanged cap, the bevel gearsQQ.. The inner ends of said screws are joined together ,(and in such a manner that either one of said screws 21, may be operated independently of the other) by the pin 35, which enters the hollow ends of said screws 21, and which is held in place by the collar Q4, placed thereon and between the ends of said screws 21; said collar 2st, and pin 23, being pierced by a transverse hole within which is screwthreaded a hollow pin Q5, the hole in said pin Q15, and the hole in the spindle 12, being alined so that the pin of a hat-pin or other articles of like nature may be placed therein, while its head is held by the jaws. Upon said screws Q1, are mounted the screwthreaded nuts 2G, which are formed upon their upper surfaces with the sliding bearings 27, which are engaged by the projecting edges of the plates 1t); while upon said nuts 2G, are secured, by the stud screws QS, the swivel jaws Q9, which are brought together to clasp the work or retracted by the action of the screws 21, within the nuts 2G; said operation being effected without a key by the ring 30, which encircles the head 5, and rests upon the collar 13, and which is provided upon one surface with the crown bevel gear 31, which may be placed with its teeth in mesh with the gears 22, and thus revolve them by being itself revolved about the head 5, by 'the operator, thus operating` both jaws at the same time and in a keyless manner, or said ring 30, may, by removing the collar 13, from the head member 5, be reversed and replaced, and as its opposite face is provided with the recesses 82, within which the gears 22, may revolve without coming in contact with anything, either of the screws 21, may then be revolved independently by a key 33, which 1s provided with a slotted end 34, which is adapted to enter the hollow screw Q1, and engage a transverse pin 35, which is secured within the hollow end of the screw 21, for the purpose.
The head of the block may be allowed to freely swivel on the spindle 12, or it may be secured from swiveling by the use of a pin 3G, having an end inserted in the steadypin hole 4, in the base, and the other end in a corresponding` hole in the lower surface of the head. The ring 30, may also be secured (when in the position shown in Fig. G, when the key is used) from turning by the use of a pin having one end placed in the hole 37, in the face of the ring` 30, and the other end in a corresponding holt` in the upper face of the collar 13.
The operation of the several parts of the device do not need any further detailed description.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an engravers block of theV class described, comprising' a base formed with an axial hole through the body thereof, the
ends of said axial hole being screw-threaded, a hollow spindle formed with a thrust-bearing upon its upper end, and screw-tln'eaded upon its lower end and adapted to be detachably secured within either end of said axial hole, a dismountable head formed with a vertical bearing and a thrust-bearing in the body thereof and adapted to be swiveled upon said spindle, movable jaws mounted in said head, means for moving said aws in a manner independently of each other, and means for moving said jaws simultaneously by an independent keyless mechanism.
2. In an engravers block, the base having a flat surface, and a spherical surface in which are screw-threaded communicating sockets, a hollow spindle formed with a screw-threaded end adapted to engage either of said sockets, and a thrust-bearing formed upon the other end of said spindle, a workholding head rotatably mounted upon said spindle, and means for preventing said head from rotating upon said spindle.
3. In an engravers block, a ring swivelly mounted upon said head, one surface of said ring formed with sockets, and a crown-bevel gear formed upon the opposite surface of said ring, aw-earrying nuts mounted in said head, combined independently or simultaneously operated nut-moving screws mounted in said head, key sockets formed in the outer end of said screws for the reception of a slotted key, bevel gears secured upon said screws and adapted to be in mesh with and rotated by the crown gear face of said ring when said face is uppermost, a collar placed between the inner ends of said screws, a pin extending through said collar and entering the ends of said screws, and a hollow pin extending transversely through said collar and pin, and in alinement with said hollow spindle.
4. In an engravers block, having a pair of movable jaws, a pair of lead screws having their outer ends journaled in said block, and connected to said jaws, and means comprising a ring mounted upon said block, a bevel gear formed upon said ring, bevel gears secured upon said lead screws and in mesh with said gear upon the rings whereby said jaws are operated in a simultaneous manner, key sockets formed in the outer ends of said lead screws for the reception of a slotted key whereby, when said ring is reversed and the gears out of engagement, said jaws may be operated independently of each other by the use of said key.
