To all whom it may concern: In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a weight or anchoring device adapted to rest upon the floor adjacent to a rocking chair. The weight 1 is provided with a central vertical post 2 and connected to said post by a bolt 3 and a nut 4: is the flattened end 5 of a rod 6. By loosely attaching the lower end of the rod 6 to the post 2, the rod 6 can be oscillated relative to the post, and should it be desired to make the same rigid relative to the post, a pin 7 can be inserted in apertures 8 provided therefor in the post 2 and the hattened end of the rod.

The rod (3 adjacent Be itknown that I, DAVID JAMES E'lLY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ross township, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to fan attachments for chairs, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel attachment for revolving fans in proximity to a person sitting in the chair.

Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment that can be advantageously used in connection with a rocking chair and operated by the rocking or oscillatory movement of the chair.

A further object of this invention is to provide a fan attachment that can be used in connection with various kinds of rocking chairs for producing a breeze or movement of the air in proximity to the head of a person using the chair.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a rocking chair with an attachment for accomplishing the above results, which will be positive in its action, simple in construction, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.

With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described in detail and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

to the upper end thereof is provided with a bearing 9 for a stub shaft 10 and-revolubly mounted on said stub shaft is a grooved pulley 11 having grooves 12 and 13. The outer face of the pulley 11 is provided with a wrist pin 14, for a purpose that will presently appear.

Mounted upon the upper end of the rod 6 is a bearing 15 for a shaft 16 and mounte upon one end of said shaft is a grooved pulley 17, while upon the opposite end of the shaft are mounted fan blades 18. An end less belt or cable 19 is adapted to travel over the grooved pulley 17 and in the groove 12 of the pulley 11.

Slidably mounted upon the rod 6 between the bearing 9 and the lower end of said rod is a sleeve 20 and the, lower end of sai sleeve is provided with a detachable bracket 21 adapted to engage a portion of the rock ing chair C, for instance the seat 21. This bracket is provided with a set screw 22, whereby it can be adjusted upon the sleeve 20, and with an opening 23 whereby it can be secured by screws or other fastening means to a chair. The sleeve intermediate the ends thereof is provided with a right angular pin 24: and loosely mounted upon said pin is the lower end of a pitman 25 which has the upper end thereof loosely mounted upon the wrist pin 14.

\Vith the lower end of the rod 6 anchored and the bracket 21 secured to the rocking chair, an oscillatory movement of the rocking chair will cause the sleeve 20 to be reciprocated upon the rod 6, it being essential that the pin 7 be removed when the attachment is used in connection with the rocking chair, whereby the rod 6 can move relative to the anchoring device. hen the sleeve 20 is reciprocated upon the rod 6, the pulley 11 is revolved through the medium of the rotary movement is imparted to the shaft 16 through the medium of the endless belt or cable 19. blades 18 will then be revolved to set the air in motion in the vicinity of the rocking chair.

Should it be desired to use ordinary palm leaf fans in connection with the shaft 16, a fan holder 26 can be mounted upon the shaft and the handles of palm leaf fans fitted one fan projecting from one side of the holder and the other fan from the opposite side.

Should it be desired to use my device in connection with a stationary chair, the rod 6 can be made rigid relative to the anchorpitman and a the groove 13 of the pulley 11 and the belt or cable operated from a motor or a suitable source of power. For instance, it can be easily coupled to a sewing machine or the like for maintaining a person cool while operating the machine.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
