PROCESS FOR MAKING' PINS.

To all whom rit may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VoLco'rT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes for Making Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a process for making cuffq pins, shirt waist pins, beauty pins, and like devices, but more particularly to the body portions thereof.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide a process or method of construction wherein seamless met-al tubing, either plated or unplated, may be utilized; whereby a solder seam longitudinally of the body may be avoided; by means of which the manufacture may be simplified, the cost lessened, and the appearance improved; and whereby the resulting body may be rendered both strong and light.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel steps falling within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a tubular blank from which the pin bodies are ultimately formed, Fig. 2, a longitudinal central sect-ion of a pair of swaging dies, Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same on line a@ .fr of Fig. 2, Fig. 14;, a side elevation of the tube after the action thereon of the swaging dies. Figs. 5 and 6, side and end elevations respectively of a severed unit, Figs. 7 and 8, respectively longitudinal and transverse sections of the forming dies, Fig. 9, a side elevation of the complete pin, and Fig. 10, a section of the same on line e e of Fig. 9.
Like characters of reference indicate like part-s throughout the views.
In carrying out my process a metallic, preferably seamless, tube A is employed. This tube may be of any desired metal such as gold, silver, or a composition metal plated with precious metal. This tube is contracted by compression at regular intervals throughout its length, forming a connected series of hollow oblong unit-s B with conoidal end portions Z; at their points of connection c, all as shown in Fig. 4.
One convenient means for performing the contraction or compression step is that Specification of Letters Patent.

shown in Figs. 2 and 3, comprising upper and lower swaging dies D and E respectively. The die D is provided with a series of oblong cavities (Z with semi-conoidal end portions CZ communicating with each other in longitudinal alinement. The companion die E has corresponding cavities e, conoidal portions c similarly arranged and adapted to register with the cavities d. The tube i is inserted into and between the dies D and E in a direction from right to left as viewed in Figl, during the vibration of the dies.
The units B are individually broken or cut apart at the points c manually or otherwise after the tube A is removed from the swaging dies, and then appear as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In order more perfectly to conform the unit B to a desirable shape for a pin body, it is longitudinally flattened upon at least one side. A convenient means for effecting this end are the forming dies G and H. The former is provided in its bottom face with an oblong curved cavity, g, preferably provided further with artistically arranged smaller cavities g to impart an ornamental surface to the resulting pin. The companion or lower die II has either a smooth upper face or is provided with a shallow cavity /L in its face adapted to register with the cavity g, as shown in Figs. T and S. The cooperative aet-ion of these forming dies flattens one side of the unit relatively to the remainder of the body, and smooths the ends of the latter.
After the described step the body B, sometimes with a surface ornamentation as i, has soldered to its flattened portion or back j the usual catch 7c and joint Z, the latter having the usual pin tongue m mounted therein, all as shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
The continuous hammering action of the swaging dies D and E upon the tube A while of great advantage in simultaneously forming the required units, at the same time somewhat hardens the walls of the tube, and care should be exercised during this step in order that the hardening be not excessive.
That I claim is,-
1. A process for making pins of the type set forth, consisting in first compressing at intervals the wall of a metallic tube to form a series of units, next severing the units at their points of compression, and then flattening auside of a unit longitudinally by compression.
2. A process for making pins of the type set forth consisting in bending the ends of a 5 metallic tube into a unit having conoidal ends, and longitudinally attening a portion of the unit.
