Application filed May 11, 1910. Serial No. 560,715.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILENTIA J. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomer, in the county of Chippewa and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derricks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to portable derricks or cranes adapted for use in connection with hay-racks, wagons or other similar vehicles; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the end portion of a vehicle provided with a derrick according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the post of the derrick, taken on the line 00-m in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the lower end portion of the derrick partly in section.
A is the body portion of a vehicle, such as a hay-rack or wagon, mounted on wheels B in the usual way, and Z) is a reach or coupling-pole under the wagon body and such as ordinarily used.
G is a hearing or eye-bolt provided with a stem 0 which is secured to the body of the vehicle, and D is the post of the derrick which is ournaled in the bearing C and arranged in a vertical position. The post D is preferably formed of a metallic tube for lightness and strength, and its lower end portion forms a tubular socket (Z.
E is a forked bracket provided with a spindle 6 upon which the socket'cl is journaled in contact with a shoulder or stop d.
F is a small ground wheel mounted on a pin 7 in the bracket E.
G is an arm which is secured to the forked bracket E and provided with a hook g at its free end which engages with an eye-bolt g secured to the reach I). The arm G may be secured to the vehicle at an angle to the derrick post in any other approved way which will hold the bracket E steady and prevent it from turning around.
H is a handle secured to the derrick post for the purpose of oscillating it. The derrick post is provided with a brace rod h on one side for the purpose of stiffening it.
I is the jib of the derrick, the lower end portion of which is pivoted by a pin 2' to a socket J provided with a pin j which is adapted to be placed in engagement with any hole of a series of holes j in the post.
The holes j are provided in order that the position of the socket may be adjusted vertically so that the jib may swing clear of obstacles.
K is the tie-rod, chain or cord between the top of the jib and the top of the post. This connection K is secured and adjusted to vary the angle of the jib in any approved man ner.
Any approved lifting devices may be used in connection with this derrick, a tackle block, for instance may be suspended from the top of the jib.
The wheel 1 runs on the ground as the vehicle is drawn along, and the arm G- permits the post D to slide up and down in the bearing O sufficiently to adapt itself to the road. The post is oscillated, without turning the ground wheel F, by means of the handle, and when the derrick is not required the lower end of the post can be raised out of engagment with the spindle and bearing, and the whole device can be carried in the vehicle.
What I claim is:
1. The combination, with a vehicle, and a bearing secured thereto; of a supporting bracket provided with a vertical spindle, a ground wheel journaled in the said bracket, means for preventing the said bracket from revolving, and a derrick provided with a post which is journaled in the said bearing, said post having a socket at its lower end which is mounted on the said spindle.
2. The combination, with a vehicle, and a bearing secured thereto; of a supporting bracket provided with a vertical spindle, a ground wheel journaled in the said bracket, means for preventing the said bracket from revolving, and a derrick provided with a tubular post which is revoluble and also slidable longitudinally in its engagement with the said bearing vertical spindle.
