Description

J. PIERITZ.
OAR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 2, 1909.
973,067. I Patented Oct. 18,1910.
JOHANNES PIERITZ, OF SIEVERTSHAGEN, GERMANY.
OAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANNES PIERITZ, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, resident of Sievertshagen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oars of the type where the oarsman can look toward the head of the boat instead of turning his back in the direction of movement as is the case with the oars used at present.
In the accompanying drawings the i1nproved oar is shown by Way of example.
Figure 1 is a perspective side view of an improved oar. Fig. 2 represents in ground plan the toothed gear and Fig. 3 shows the case in side view in which the toothed gear is inclosed.
The improved oar consists of the blade a, the casing or box 6 and the handle 0. The parts a and o are pivoted with their inner and outer forkshaped ends respectively on square pivots d and (Z which are fixed each upon the axle of a horizontal toothed wheel 6 and 6 respectively. The oar is mounted adjustably in a vertical bracket which is Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 2, 1909.
fixed upon the rim of the boat.
' tially as Patented Oct. 18, 1910. Serial No. 510,934.
If the handle 0 is pulled its toothed wheel 6 which meshes with the toothed wheel e revolves the same in opposite direction, that is to say, the blade at is pushed back and the boat is moved forward.
I claim An improved bowfacing oar, comprising in combination, a handle part, a blade part and a box pivotably mounted upon the gunwale of the boat, square bolts projecting through the topplate of said box, two toothed wheels meshing the one with the other and located in said box, the vertical axles of said toothed wheels carrying said square bolts, a forkshaped outer end of the handle part mounted upon the inner square bolt and a forkshaped inner end of the blade part mounted upon the outer square bolt, substandescribed and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
J OHANN ES PIERITZ. Witnesses:
