Description
lnovum! PUMP. APPLIOATIOI FILED JUNE R0, 1908.
Patented out. 18,1910. Y
GRAY STAUNTON, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
VACUUM-PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed June 20, 1908. 'Serial No. 439,485.
To aZZ whom "it may concern:
lie it known that I, GRAY S'rAUN'roN, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Ilva'nston, in the county of Cook and Intate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vacuum-Pumps, of which the following isa specification.
'My invention relates to vacuum pumps,
:and has for its general object to provide an facture and e 'cient as a packing.
' Other and further objects ofmy invention \v,ill'become apparent to those skilled iu the art from the following description taken in ,conjifniction 'with fthe accompanying drawi l'*` if' igi"1r'e`1 is a side View partly in elevation and-,partly in section, of an embodiment of my. invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view show# ing the 4 acking detached from the pump base, an Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail with parish'rokenY vaway, ofthe Sealing thimble. f .i 'In '.Sid'drawing' 5 indicates in general a pump', whereof 6 is-a cylinder or shell, screw ,threaded itt-its' power end for reception of a I n threaded capB, having a central aperture 9 throughout, if. vesired, but for some purposes I preferably `provide said diaphragm smallerl diameter than. 'that of the c vlinder, :and'having projecting :therefrom the -tl'iroat or barrel 10 of such `desired'smaller "diariietei",*preferably provided at its outer extremity with au exterior bead 11.`
l, The Sealing Jckino", generally indicated at 12,'- is in the orrn o a centrally apertured riibbeiz'thii'nblgor cap, providing a circular y 13 of suitable len l1 7&0 flif'd good bearing'surface, and a 1a- Ap lirirgin on head' 14, provided with a` central thin rubber side" wal af erf-ure 1-5. The -,diaphragm or head 14 of t e thimb'le ma be of uniform thickness livit-h'a' central thickened portion or exterlor leaving ul'iqbstructed a surroundmg annular plane portion 17, said boss l'G being provided with projections 18, preferably in the forni of radial ribs. I prefer that the entire thimble structure should be made of good rubber and of a normal interior diameter somewhat less than the exterior diameter of the pump base to which itis to-be applied, as shown at Fig. 2. In use the rubber thimblc is forced on to the throat 1() of the pump base, as shown in Fig. 1, Where it is retained primarily by its contractile efl'ort, its thinness, however, making itsensitive to atmospheric pressure to cling to the throat. and prevent leakage when a Vacuum tendency is engendered 1n the pump, 'articularly through the provision of the ri 11 for its engagement# Then forced upon a plane surface, the edges ofthe packing are compressed by the rim ofl the throat 11 and make sealing contact'with the'surfa'ce.' The particular construction shown in Fig. 3 ad-v vantageously may be employed for sealing vacuum packages, whereina valve is emplo'ved located in a recess in tire topor cover of thc package. Thus as shown in lFig. 1, a' indicates the top of a receptacle to be sealed, provided with a vent opening a communieating with a top recess a in which is located the valve B, the boss 16 of the packing described being of such size as to fit Within the recess a, and the ribs 18 preventing the valve B from rising to close the orifice' 15 in the packing. `with each' upstroke of Athe Plllll).
y IV i'ile I have herein describedfin solne de'- tail a particular embodiment of inyi'nve'n-- tion, it will be apparent to, those skilled. .1n the art. that numerous.changesin thc'speclfic' details of construction mightbe made. withy out departure from its s irit and scope, and
central orifice and integral means formalin-T I taining said valve in spa-ced relation. to said"V orifice.
2. In a vacuum-pump. sealing member',lthe .y
combination, withthe lport and valve o f a s -comprisin a vacuum package, of aboss Surround-ing a central orlfcve 1n sald member and means, comprising projections on saldb4 Ss, for preventlng the closlng of said orifice by said valve.
3. In a vacuum pump sealing member, the combination Wth a-vacuumpackage providing a plane surface and `a vvalved aperture therein, of a throat, an a ertured thimble of rubber held thereoverl part for coaction with the the package, and a part for valve of. the ackage' a perthe aperture 1n the thimble.
' pump and a p ane sur ace of maintaining. the ture'spa'ced from 4..The combination of a tained on the bead thereof, wall of -shape toconforinl to tl face of the throat, a head extending across the mouth ofthe throat having an aperture y its resilience' therein and projections on the head `around said aperture. y
5. 'In a vacuum pump sealing member for operation in conjunction with the port and 'valve of a vacuum package, a rubber thimble having in its head a central orice, a boss surroundingsaid orice, and radially dis'- posed ribs around said ori cel projecting from ,said boss, between which'rib's air is admitted in its passage from the' valve to the vacuum package` vacuum pump'eeallng member c'ma side portion, 13, an apertured diahragm portion, 14, a lbos-s member-,16, and projections, 18, substantially as'and vfor-'the purpose described. 2
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my 4hand in the presence of two witnesses.`
