Be it known that I, Cnnis'rzaN Bom, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Budapest., in the Kingdom of Hungary, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Opening or Closingl the Discharge-Openings o1" `Vertical Retorts or Chambers; and I do hereby declare, the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for opening or closing the dis charge openings of vertical retorts or cham hers, and more particularly to that class ot' apparatus in which the valves ot a plurality of retorts are controlled .trom a central place. Controlling means of this character are required in retortsfbecause the room which is below the retorts and above the floor ot' the oven must not he obstructed by levers. or cranks which would interft-u'e with the rcmoval of the coke dise' urged from the retorts.
The object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus ol" this class, in which thel driving mechanism can easily and securely be` connected to or disconnected from the valveof the retort.
A further object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus which will clearly indicate,-\\-hether or not. the said valve is connected to or disconmfcted 'from the. driving mechanism.

By rotating the spindle 10 and thereby moving the. samea` axially in either direction, the shaft 5 i shifted accordingly, while the said spindle does not interfere with the rotation of the shaft. ` And the object of this part of my invention is to provide a simple driving mechanism for the shaft 6, which will be independent of the expansion of the oven by the heat. `For this purpose the driving mechanism consists of a rope or belt gearing.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, on each of the shafts S and on the front side of the-oven a pulley 17 is mounted which is normally free to rotate on said shaft. screw 32 provided in the bottom plate of the oven engages in a. circumferential groove made in a cylindrical flange of the pulley, so as to lock the same against lateral" displacement. Thereby the pulley is prevented from foilowing the axial movement ofthe shaft 6. The hub of each of said pulleys is formed with clutch teeth 18 and 18 adapted to oooperate with clutch 'members 19 and 19 vsecured to the shaft S on both sides-of the hub of the pulley. The clutch members 19 -and 19 are so arranged relatively to each Aotherand to the teeth 18 and 18', that by shifting the shaft 6 with the clutch members 19, 19 and 9, 9 either'l the clutches 19,18 and 9, 8, or the clutches 19', 18and 9', 8' are simultaneously closed.
The alleys 17 are rotated by rods 2O and 2G sli ably supported between rollers 2l, 21 and 21,'21 respectively. Said rods are adaptedto be reciprocated in opposite directions by means of a crank disk 22 to which they are connected by links 23 and 23. The latter are connectedto the crank diskA at diametrically opposite points, so that u on rotation of the said disk the rods 29 an '20 'are shifted the same distance, but in oppositedirections. Each of the pulleys 17 is connected at its circumference to both rods 20 and 20 by means of exiole mem-I tbers,'such as ropes 24 and 24 adjustably attached to the rods by means of screws 25 and 25 respectively. The crank disk 22 can be rotated by a crank 26 operatively connected therewith by a chain 27I and 'chain wheels 28, 29 and it can be locked in its closing or opening position by means of a weighted crank 30..
As appears Jfrom the drawings, upon operation of the crank 26 the rods 20 land 20 are shifted 'n opposite directions, and such shifting movement is transmitted, through the ropes 24 and 24', to the pulleys 17 which are thereby rotated in one or the other di-l rection.' The rotary movement ofthe pulleys is transmitted to the valves 3 or 8 which are thereby opened or closed according to the direction of the rotation of the crank 2G.
jin important feature of my invention resides in the use or the elastic connecting 1, members or ropes 24 and 24,which are more snnple 1n construction and operation than toothed racks heretofore used for this purpose. The apparatus can'easily be moiied and if necessary be adjusted by means of the screw 25, 25.
I claim:
l. ln an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combination with a longitudinally slidable rotary driving shaft adapted to be coupled to said valveand to close the same-by its rotary movement, of,` an element for shifting said shaft.
2. In an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combination with a longitudinally slidable rotary driving shaft adapted to be coupled to said valve and to close the same by its rotary movement, of a screw spindle forsbifting said shaft.
3. In an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combination with a rotary sleeve carrying said valve, and a rotary and longitudinally slidable shaft extending through said sleeve and adapted to be coupled to said sleeve and to close the valve by its rotary movement, of an element for shifting said shaft.
4. In an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combination with a longitudinally slidable rotary driving shaft adapted to be coupled to said valve and to close the same by its rotary movement, of a driving pulley loosely mounted on said shaft, and means to couple said driving pul ley to said shaft upon shifting the latter.
5. In an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combination with a longitudinally slidable rotary driving shaft adapted to be coupled to said valve and to 100 close the same by its rotary movement, lof a driving pulley on said shaft, a reciprocatory element, and adjustable connecting means between said pulley and reciprocatory element.
6. n an apparatus for opening or closing the valve of a retort, the combinationl with a longitudinally slidable rotary driving shaft adapted to bewcoupled to said valve and to close. the same by its rotary movement, ofa 110 driving pulley on said shaft, a pair of rods adapted-to be reciprocated in opposite directlons, and vflexible and adjustable connecting members between said rods and pulley.
