TIT SA MECHANISM FOR APPLYING LABELS OR WRAPPERS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Rosa and HENRY Rosn, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, both of Albion Vorks, Gainsborough, in the county of Lincoln, England, have invented new and useful Mechanism for Applying Labels or Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus de' scribed in the specification of British Letters Patent No. 27 ,722/07 for applying labels, or wrappers, to boxes, blocks, packages, tins, or other containers, (which we will hereinafter refer to as boxes) and consists in the combination of an improved device for folding the ends of the label, or wrapper, over the box, the said folding device having arms arranged to move in opposite directions and to be operated against the action of springs by suitably shaped levers and cams. The aforesaid arms, of which there are two, are provided, one with a projection which acts to tuck in one end of the label, or wrapper, the other arm being provided with a roller faced with rubber, or other soft ma terial, and adapted to operate on the other end of the label, or wrapper, and to completely fold the label, or wrapper, over the box being labeled, or wrapped. These arms, operated by mechanism, which shall be hereinafter more particularly described, form very efficient and effective means for accomplishing the desired object.
We will describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively an elevation and plan of the folding device and the means for operating it.
The mechanism for folding the labels, or wrappers, over the fourth side of the boxes 00, in the mold 26 on the support 27 comprises a folding device 40 having two arms 42 and 43 mounted on a common center 41. Each of the arms is operated to act on the label, or wrapper, in reverse directions by means of levers 44, or 45, connecting rod 46, or 47 and cams 48, or 49. The levers 44, 45, are pivoted to any suitable part of the machine framing and are operated against the action of springs 50 and 51. One arm 43 carries a projection 52 to tuck in the inner end of the label, or wrapper, the other arm Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 9, 1910.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Serial No. 581,141.
42 being provided with a roller 53 preferably faced with rubber, or other soft material.
The parts of the apparatus which we have not described are arranged and operated in accordance with the specification of the aforesaid British Patent No. 27,722/07. By the combination with the machine in accordance with the said former patent of the improvements according to the present invention, we provide a machine which is more eflicient in operation and which labels, or wraps, the boxes, or the like, in a better manner.
WVhat we claim is:
1. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with article supporting means, of a folding device consisting of two arms having their upper ends pivoted upon a common axis, one of said arms having a roller journaled in its free end, and the other arm having a projection extending substantially at right-angles to the length of said arm, and means connecting with the arms for moving them in reverse direct-ions to cause a wrapper to be folded upon the article to be wrapped.
2. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with article supporting means, of a folding device consisting of two arms having their upper ends pivoted upon a common axis, one of said arms having a roller journaled in its free end, and the other arm having a projection extending substantially at right-angles to the length of said arm, and means connecting with the arms for moving them in reverse directions to cause a wrapper to be folded upon the article to be wrapped, said means including oppositely extending rods, levers connected to the rods, cams engaging intermediate portions of the levers for moving the levers in one direction, and springs connected to the levers for moving them in an opposite direction.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WILLIAM ROSE.
