Be it known that I, FnRRIs L. R. FRAN- CIsCo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hangers, particularly to that type of hangers used in connection with steel and concrete buildings.
In certain buildings, whether or not concrete is used in their construction, what is known as I-beams are extensively employed, the beams being arranged to carry the load of the floors and a system of pipes or shafting. In suspending npcs, shafts or other devices from such beams, it has been customary heretofore to drill holes in the flanges of the beams and bolt the devices thereto. This method of hanging the devices is expensive.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a hanger adapted for use` in connection with I-beams which is secured to the beam without bolts or other fastenings apart from the hanger itself.
In buildings constructed of concrete, or steel and concrete, it has been customary to employ inserts buried in the concrete to which hangers may be fastened. It is sometimes desirable to position hangers after a building has been completed.
It is a further object therefore to provide a device that can be used both' before and after a building has been completed.
Another 4object 1s to provide a hanger y that may be cast and used without machinin or hand fitting, thus reducing its cost.
ith these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specically pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanym drawings which form a part of this specication and in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is an end view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 8 in Fig. 1
and showing the manner of applying thev device.
In carrying the invention into eifect there is provided a pair of jaws which may vary within wide limits, both in form and inaterial. In the best constructions however and as shown, cast or malleable iron jaws 1 and 2 are employed, the outer ends of the jaws respectively terminating in hooks 3 and 4 adapted to engage the flange of an I-beam, as shown in Fig. 8.
In order to eliminate the necessity for machining or drilling holes and fitting bolts to hold the hanger in position, interlocking means whereby the jaws are held is provided, and this means may vary within wide limits. As shown however, the interlocking means consists in ribs 5 and G respectively integral with the jaws 1 and Q and running transversely across thc device. These ribs are tapered slightly at 13 and arranged to slide by each other when the hanger is applied to the {iange of an I-beam, and become interlocked by their wedging action. A
For the purpose of supporting stringcrs or other devices suspended from the hanger, one of the jaws is provided with a nut seat 7 sunk in the upper surface of the jaw and shaped to prevent the turning of a. nut placed therein. An aperture 8 is provided in the bottom of the nut seat through which a. bolt may be passed to engage the nut on the seat, as shown in Fig.
In the operation of the device, a uut l() is dropped on the seat 7, and the jaw is placed in position under the flange of an I-beam with its hooked end engaging the flange. The awl 2 is then hooked over the opposite side of the liange and slid or driven into position, the ribs 5 and G serving` to interlock the two jaws and flange. At any time after the device is in position, a Stringer 11 or other device, may be suspended from the hanger by a bolt 12 coperating with the nut 10. j
When the device is to be used in connection with a concrete building under construct-ion, it is placed in position before the floors are formed, and may be used for the purpose of supporting the forms for said floors. Further, it may be buried in the concrete when the tloor is completed with only the bolt hole visible. IVhen the device is to be used in connection with a concrete buildin@r already completed, the concrete is chipped away from the I-beam where the hanger is to be applied, the device positioned, and new concrete filled in around it.
Changes and variations may be made in the structure by which the invention is carried into ettect. The invention therefore is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described.
What is claimed is:
1. In a hanger, the combination with a pair of jaws terminating in hooks adapted to engage the flange of an I-beam, of ribs integral with the jaws and spaced from t-he hooks said ribs being shaped to lock the jaws together, substantially as described.
2. In a hanger, the combination with a pair of jaws terminating in hooks adapted to engage the flange of an I-beain, of transverse tapered ribs integral with the jaws and spaced from the hooks said ribs being shaped to slide by each other into locking position, substantially as described.
3. In a hanger, the combination with a pair of jaws terminating in hooks adapted to engage the flange of an I-bealn, one of the jaws being provided with a nut seat and an aperture 1n the bottom of the seat, of ribs integral with the jaws and spaced from the hooks said ribs being shaped to lock the jaws together, substantially as described.

In a hanger, the combination with a pair of jaws terminating in hooks ada ted to engage the flange of an I-beam, one o the jaws being provided with a nut seat and an aperture in the bottom of the seat, of transverse tapered ribs integral with the jaws and spaced from the hooks said ribs being shaped to slide by each other into locking position, substantially as described.
