TREATMENT OF COKE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN ELY and :ARTIIUR ROLLASON, subjects of England, re-
incandescent or partially incandescent state,,
are covered with a layer of coke breeze, coke dust, coal ash, or other suitable material, of suflicient thickness to exclude air and moisture while the cokes are slowly cooling down, during which the volatile substances con tained in the coke escape. The cokes, after cooling slowly with air and moisture excluded in the manner herein described, become softened and when employed as fuel in an open grate or a furnace, they will ignite and burn with a steady flame.
The softened cokes treated by our improved. method can be ground and used in the manufacture of electric carbons or blacking for foundry purposes'or any other use for which soft carbon can be employed.
What We do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

The method of forming a fuel from coke which consists in withdrawing the coke from the retort while in a heated state, covering the same with a layer of suitable cornlninuted material of sufficient thickness to exclude air from the coke, and permitting the coke to cool while covered with said 40 layer.
2. The method of forming a fuel from coke which consists in withdrawing the coke from the retort while in a heated state, covering the same with a layer of suitable comminuted material of sufficient thickness to exclude air and moisture, and permitting the coke to cool while covered with the said layer. 3. The method of forming a fuel from coke which consists in withdrawing the coke from the retort while in an incandescent state, coverin the same with a layer of coke dust of a su cient thickness to exclude air and moisture, and cool while covered with the said layer.
