UNITED STA S,
HERBERT HO'OD, 0F TbLED'O, OHIO.
LEVER-LOCK non AU'roMosILns.
Specification 'of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2, 1909. Serial No. 520,727.
' Be it known that I, HERBERT H001), a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. z
My invention relates particularly to automobile locks; and has for its object the provision of a simple, unique and highly efficient lock of tlns class, which, is strong and durable in its construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and adapted to removably cooperate with the controlling-lever guide to securely lock the controlling lever in neutral or inoperative position.
The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention are fully described in the following specification, and
a preferred embodiment of the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are bottom, side and end views, respectively, of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a guide and lever with my invention in association therewith, and Fig. 5 is a plan of a lever-guide of the H-slot type with which my lock may cooperate to secure a lever in neutral position therein.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the controlling-lever of an automobile, and 2 a form of ide therefor-which is used on a large num er of difierent makes of ma chines andis commonly termed the H-slot uide due to its slot resembling an H in orm.
My invention is not however restricted for use with this form of guide, it being shown merely to illustrate the manner of using the lock.
- The lock constituting my invention is shown in the resent instance as comprising a plate or body 3, which is adapted to rest upon the top of the guide 2 and-has one end slotted or notched, as at i, to adapt it to straddle or receive the lever 1, when such lever is in neutral. position within its slot, as indicated in Fig. 4. Projecting from the 5, which are intended to fit within the leg portions of the slot of the guide and to coact with the side and adjacent'end walls of the slot to prevent lateral or longitudinal. movements of the plate relative tothe guide.- If desired the plate 3 may be further braced against lateral movements by studs'flb pr0- jectin 1 from the furcat-i'ons of the slotted end 0 the walls 0 slot.
In one of the bosses 5 is provided looking means ofany suitable type, the latch member or members 7 of which, when the plate 3 is resting on the guides, are adapted to engage under or to coact in any other suitable manner with the guide to secure the ing portion of the guide slot in applying the locking-plate to the guide, as is apparent.
8 designates. a key for acting on the lock to retract the latch members.
In using myslever lock it is evident that 'the lever, if not disposed within the connecting portion 9 of the guide-slot, is placed in such position and the on the top of the guide with its forked end straddling the lever, as shown in Fig. 4:, and its bosses 5 and 6 projecting within the parallel portions of the guide slot with the outer ends of one or both of the former abutting against the adjacent ends of such slots to limit the endwise movements of the plateB Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
the late in osition to-abut-against i the guide in one direction, the lever l limiting such movements in the opposite direction. To release the plate from engagement with the lever it is onlyv necessary to insert the key 8 into the lock and turn it to retract the latch members 7 after which the plate may be withdrawn.
As the neutral position of the lever is substantially midway between the ends of the parallel portions of. the guide-slot it is apparent that the lock is capable-of being.
i I notlimited to any I wish it understood that my invention is specific form, construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my claim as new ters Patent, -is,
1. In an article of the class described, the combination with a lever and an 'H-slot guide therefor, of a member removablefrom said guide and adapted to rest freely thereon, said member having an end notched to receive the lever when in neutral position within the guide slotand also having a boss adapted to project within a leg of said slot to coact with an end thereof to prevent an endwise movementof the member out of e'n- 'gagement with the lever, and means carried by said boss and adapted to cooperate with the guide to prevent member from engagement therewith.
invention, what and desire to secure by Let-.
a removal of the.
2. In'an article of the class described, the combination with a lever and an H-slot guide therefor, of a member removable from said guide and adapted to rest freelytthereon, said member having an end notched to receive the lever when in neutral position in the guide slot and also having a plurality of bosses adapted to project into different portions of said slot to cooperate with the walls thereof to prevent lateral or endwise movements of the member relative to said guide, and locking means carried by one of the bosses and adapted to cooperate with the guide to prevent a removal of the member from engagement with the lever.
In testlmony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
HER Ear HOOD.
I Witnesses 0. W; OWEN,
