lllpplication tiled August El, 1909.
To all 'whom may lle it known that l, @nannies ll. t nennen?, a. 'citizen ot the nited States, residing' at `Willshoro, in the county olf Essex and State 5 ot' New' York, have invented new and useful .Improvements in Cow v lfsil Hold ers, ot
which the following is speciiication.
This invention relates to a device tor application to cows for the purpose of holdingl the coWs-tail and preventing her from kieking or switching the tail The prima 'y' ohject. of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpencive construe tion oiI device which will eliectnally l this dual purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide acoinhined anti-kickinev and tail holding attachment which will accommodate itself t.y cows of dillerent sizes.
W ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement ot parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which 'Figure 1v is a perspective view showing; the application ot the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ot the device on en enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail section through the free ends of the jews ot one ot the shackles, showing the locking' connection.
The device comprises a pair of shackles l and 2 which are adaptef for application to the hind legs of the animal, as shown in Figi.
1. hese shackles are duplicates in con- A. struction, each being el elliptical torni and. comprising outer and inner lonnitudinallf,7 bowed jaws or inemhers and etpivotalljv connected at their rear ends,y as indicated at 40 5. The opposite or forward ends olI the jaws are4 respectively provided with short and long parallel arms 6 and 7,-the arm 3 of the jaw 3 being longitudinali;7 slotted or hiiiuicated to forni a keeper, While the longer arm 7 of the jaw` 4i is provided With a slot 8 for the reception of a latch Q which is pivotally mounted therein and provided with a beveled and hooked locking end l0 to engage said keeper. The inner end `ot'the latch 9 a 'is connected by a spring; llwith the extremity of the erm fl', which spring seives to nor'- inally maintain the latch in locking position.
The jaws 3 and 4: are sntlicien form arshackle having a !L large enough the shackles to d Serial lo. 515,.
jaw l, hv which such end ot' the sin-ing` is i retained in position and the hed); ot the spring permitted to expand and retract accommodate itself tc variations in the sizes oi the legs ot cows to which the shackle is applied. lt will he understood thatI in zipplying each shackle, the latch is ret noted, the shackle opened and applied, and then al loived to close h v the action oi: the spring' l2, nf'hereupon the latch will automatically enpage the keeper il to hold the shackle closed about 'the leg.
The two shackles are connected by a cross har l? extending between the cez'itral portions ol" their inner jaws si., by which they are coupled and held in determined relation. spring clip 18 is preferably secured to this cross ha r ano has its ilree end hearing on the inner arm of one of the instelling` devices, to
serve as a support hy which the device may p he suspended when not in use. A tail holder lt), in the Yform ot a loop or eve, is arranged between the rear ends of the shackles l and f2 and is provided with parallel arms 2O which are fitted to slide in openings in the bar 17 and project forwardly therefrom. An eye holt or pin 2l connects the forward ends of these arms and serves as an attachment Vfor the roar ends of link rods or other tlexihlcconnections which extend theretroxn to the inner ends of the latches f), and thus connect said holder with the latches7 so that by a rearward sliding* motion of the holder the latches may he simultaneously swung on their pivots against the resistance of the springs` 1l. to open the shackles and permit oi their ready removal vtroni the animal. lol the usey of the devi e, after the shackles have been titled upon the legs of the animal, the tail is in serted dov/n through the holder 19, n'hcrehjv itwill he held so that it cannot he switched by the cow. :it the same time' the shackles engaging' the `legs will prevent the cow from kicking.
Freni the foregoing struction and ino of descrintion. the eonl use or my improved tail holder and anti-kicking device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a device of this character is .provided which is effective in use and will prove of great convenience to farmers and others in enabling them to prevent a cow from kicking or switching her tail while she is being milked.
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of shackles, latches for holding the shackles closed, and a cow tail holder carried by the shackles and connected with the latches, whereby upon a rearward movement of said holder the latches may be retracted.
2. A device of the character described comprising shackles, each embodying a pair of pivoted jaws, leg clamping springs carried by the shackles, latches for holding the jaws thereof closed, a tail holder carried by the shackles, and means operable thereby for retracting said latches.
3. A device of the character describedl comprising a pair of shackles, each embodying a pair of pivotally connected jaws, a clamping spring associated with each of said shackles to engage the leg of the animal and hold the shackles thereon, and a tail holder carried by said shackles.
4. A device of comprising leg engaging shackles, each emthe character described' bodying pivoted jaws, the jaws closed, a tail holder carried by and movably mounted on the shackles, and a connection between said holder and the latches whereby the latter may be simultaneously re-4 tracted.
5. A device of the character described comprising a pair of shackles, each embodying a pair of pivoted jaws, spring actuated latches for locking the jaws of the shackles in closed position, a' tail holder slidably mounted upon the shackles, and connections between said tail holder and the latches, whereby the latter may `be simultaneously retracted.
6. A device of the character described comprising a pair of connected shackles, each embodying a pair of jaws, leg clamping springs yieldingly connecting the jaws of the respective shackles, latches for locking the jaws of the shackles in closed position, springs for normally holding said latches in locking position, a tail holder slidably mounted on the shackles, and connections between said holder and the latches whereby the latter may be simultaneously retracted.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
